Sat Nav is an Idiot - Again

Featured Replies

Posted previously about Sat Nav in 2018 VRS diesel being less than reliable....

Anyhow, aside from fact it constantly wants you to exit off motorways only to go over roundabout and rejoin, anyone care to offer reason as to why it would show a different destination for a postcode used previously?

Technology. Can't live without it but sometimes can't live with it!!!!

The routing  through junctions rather than staying on the motorway is one of the reasons I'm looking forward to the next Apple ios update which will allow Waze to be used in car play.

Whilst in Glasgow the other week, my sat nav display showed me doing donuts once I’d exited the multi storey car park for about 5mins.

Really helpful as I hadn’t a clue where I was going, strangely it’s only been weird since updating it with the latest maps :speechless:

That's usually caused by the GPS signal not being decoded straight away and the sat nav using dead reckoning.

Coming out of a multi-storey car park in a town is a classic case of being in an "urban canyon" where very few satellites can be seen (due to the surrounding high buildings) so it takes the GPS receiver a long time to decode the signal from enough satellites to get even a rough fix.

Glasgow has a few sat nav issues. My Tom Tom insists  that i should take 3 consecutive right turns around bridge pillars instead of a simple left turn when coming off the M8 at one junction. As noted above I think the problem lies in not getting a clear line of sight to the satellite while under various bridges at that particular point.

I'm using Apple Maps which can be a bit sketchy too, and I still don't fully trust it. Hoping TomTom announce CarPlay support soon, would seem to be suicidal of them not to and I don't think it's a particularly big job.

I had this and did 40 mi further back from Wales, as in the end didn't trust what it was doing as it was trying to respond to the traffic or something. Must have a play with the settings. Fortunately don't have to rely on it much.

It's as if there's left over traffic alerts for roadworks on junctions so doing mini diversions. Also had it when roads are really busy, as if getting off and back on again, may gain a few car lengths.

Lol

When it gets busy and congested mine takes seeming delight in advising me "caution there are obstructions on the route". Yes I know. I'm sat in it doing zero miles per hour!!!! Like I say though, puzzled why same postcode put in twice now and it gives different destination about 1/2 mile away?!

SatNav certainly can be frustrating. Only last week we were going from Beckenham to Bury St Edmunds. Worked my way through to the South Circular, out to The Sun and Sands on Blackheath to drop off someone then through Blackwall Tunnel to eventually join the bottom of the M11 and join A14 via A11 Six Mile Bottom.

Come out of Blackwall and the SatNav wants to send me via the A13 to the M25! What's that all about? I have to say mine is a seperate Garmin unit and was fantastic in Italy.

Sat Nov is only an "Idiot" when the idiot using it blindly follows it and doesn't excercise any cop on,or look at the pretty picture on the screen.

I use my satnav as 'advisory only' - I ignore it most of the time LOL

It is great for entertainment with the comical mispronunciation of the majority of street names etc

We also have a laugh about it when it wants us to use the satnav route and just will not give up with it and recalculate to the route we are actually using, watching the changing ETA's is really funny,it usually catches up fairly quickly but occasionally seems incapable of recalculating to the easiest/fastest route.

It is however good for having an ETA and great for the last mile or two when trying to find an address in a strange town/city !
