Revo Stage 1

Featured Replies

So, I had a chat with a Revo guy today - he was dropping off some advertising material at my Indy in a wrapped and lowered 530bhp Golf R.

He reckons my 220bhp vRS would be circa 330bhp with a Revo Stage 1 - normally £500 plus VAT but my Indy will arrange it for me for £500.

The guy also said that their maps are designed with overall driveability in mind rather than just top end power.

Now, that’s tempting, if it is to be believed!!

Thoughts guys?

Is a Stage 1 Revo map really going to take a 220bhp car to 330bhp with no other mods?

If so, it might just persuade me to keep my car for a while longer with the addition of a new map, rather than changing up early for something with more power.

That's what their website says for your car. A 50% increase is on the high side, but it's not inconceivable for a turbo charged petrol engine. Just be aware if you change gears agressively and frequently find yourself launching from traffic lights; you'll soon be melting synchros (Not to say vRS gearbox's a weak, I have no knowledge of them).

With it freshly serviced, new spark plugs and air filter with 99 ron minimum super unleaded in the tank get it on a Dyno.

The REVO site shows it on 98 ron and when you ask where they get 98 ron in the UK they hum and hey.

As do APR the company, the Dealers installing the Re-map should know their stuff.

Thanks both. The Revo guy said the DSG is strong enough was far more than 330bhp, so, again if true, good to know.

Mind you, mine is slightly jerky at the moment,  although at parking speeds only, so will need to check it’s okay / whether due any updates etc before putting more power through it.

(The jerkiness I describe hasn’t been a feature of the two other DSG ‘boxes I did many miles with)

Ah well according to Wiki, the DQ250 DSG is good for 400NM of torque and Revo stage 1 states between 430 and 490NM.

Interesting. I must find time for some more googling!

My DSG is jerky at low speeds which looks embarrassing but I’d rather keep an eye on the kerb and watch those massive wheels then worry about the less than smooth updake of drive! I see no reason a TSi won’t take that kind of power. The engine itself was producing 310 factory in the Golf R (different turbo though). I can’t help but wonder why VW didn’t give the Golf GTi and Octy more power as the standard 220 was a long way down from some of the Golf rivals. It seems to have taken a while to get to 245 and even then it’d nice to see the top end vRS with the 280 output of the Superb. I’ve gone DTUK on my TDi for a variety of reasons and it just helps it feel more swift as it’s not a particularly quick car IMO. If I’d have gone petrol I’d be aiming for 300 bhp or so and that sounds like fun :)

I'd say go for it, there are numerous people on here running stage 1 or higher and haven't reported issues. More power, more fun ;)

I got 290 at the wheels with a stage 1, add your 15% on and you get about 330bhp, that's a totally standard 220.

Got 475Nm aswell.

Mines still drives exactly the same lower down but turns into a monster if you want it too, could post my dyno graph to illustrate that if you want?

My 220 was closer to 240 standard seemingly, guy who mapped it reckon Skoda/Seat get given lower figures than they have, as they want VW/Audi cars with similar power to sound worth the extra £10k.

I am under the impression that the VRS uses the same DSG as the GTI/R - the R has 300 as standard so there should not be a problem, DSG maps on the R are not normally recommended till you get over 360bhp

I was quoted 305-310 Bhp by the Lincoln REVO dealer.  I went for Shark Stage 1, which showed 291-297 Bhp on 3 rolling road runs, with a 3 yr old air standard filter on Tesco momentum. It runs well and am still very happy with it after 9 months of no problems. It is smooth and regularly lights up tye traction control in 2nd and 3rd even when the road is dry. As long as the REVO map is progressive it will really add to the car's performance, it is addictive! The subsequent increase in torque is just as beneficial, the 220 TSI  already pulls well but  you definitely notice a difference. The standard clutch should be fine as long as you don't floor continuously in high gears from low revs.

Revo in Daventry had a demo based on a 2014 VRS estate with a DSG box and IS38 hybrid turbo pushing out 410bhp but no VAQ diff so when a magazine road tested it they said wheelspin was a bit of an issue, but 330bhp should be more manageable for the drivetrain particularly as Ant-Vrs 2014 DSG estate also is using a hybrid turbo and coping with 390BHP.:D

Indeed 252PS gives 0-100mph in 12.7seconds and 277PS gives 0-100mph in 12.3seconds which is very impressive for such a practical family car.

As long as you use Tesco Momentum 99 Super or Shell V-Power you will have no problems and of course use a reputable dealer to carry out the mapping. My current car is the sixth one I have had mapped and totally transforms the drive. Standard VRS245 runs out of puff above 125mph taking over 40seconds to eventually get to 250kph (156mph) but a mapped car with take around 15seconds to go from 125-156mph. I know I've done it!:D

I wondered when you’d be along! Good info! Cheers.

They aren't the same boxes. Golf Gti uses a DQ380, R uses a DQ381. Both wet clutch 7 speeds but the DQ381 is a 4 wheel drive variant.

Only in the Golf 7 facelift. Pre-facelift uses the 6 speed DQ250 wet clutch in both GTI and R which is fitted to all MK3 VRS except the facelift 245, which gets the DQ380.

In Dunc69 case he does have the same box he has the DQ250 which is the same as used in GTI/R of the same age.

?

Is that a Golf R with 265ps?

Golf R with 265ps?

The only golf I know of with a 265ps output is the GTI ClubSport

What about ones with AWD before the Mk7?

Anyway is it being said that Mk7 Golf GTI with 220ps or 227ps have the same gearbox as a 296ps Golf R.

I was referring to the 6 speed DSG in the pre facelift R - forgot the MK7.5 has 7 Speed. But that box is good for 360 without a map.

All Mk7 Rs are 300bhp/ps (I know they are not exactly the same)7.5s were 310 but are now being dialled back to 300 again to meet emissions targets though everything is subject to change and confirmation

Yes the MK7 GTI and Rs have the same 6 speed DSG
