Skoda Octavia VRS 2.0TDI (CUPA EA288) high oil consumption

Featured Replies

Yes, that's the one. Yours are just vapors, oil consumption from that should be minimum, close to none. My next actions will be to replace turbocharger and valve seal rings. Will not dismantle engine, I still think problem is not from the pistons/rings.

Cheers!

I ordered new  - Head gasket - Head bolts - Head module bolts (18pcs) - piston rings - conrod bearings + bolts - main bearings + bolts - thrust bearings - crank

  • Finally found what was causing high oil consumption for my VRS, please see attached picture, this how piston one looked for car with millage 160K. And one more thing, don't do long service intervals,

Hiya cristiancci. Just wondering if you have an update on your oil consumption and frequent dpf regens?

my octy consumes oil and it will do a regen around every 20 miles! After reading this im worried its piston rings but like yours, my car runs and drives fine.

Am schimbat si eu turbina si capacul epurator, dar degeaba... Are momente si momente cand intre de nebuna in 2 regenerari la rand poate imi lasi un nr de tel si vb

I would be very keen of knowing how you get on with this and if it solves the problem! I also have a car with an EA288 TDI Engine (Golf Mk7 GTD with 184ps version in my case) which seems to have an appetite for oil.  The consumption is maybe not as high as some here, but it takes possibly 2 litres between 10000 mile services.  The car has 152k miles on the clock, but has had a liking for oil for some time now (as far as i can remember).  Mine also seems to increase in consumption if i do more motorway driving.  I thought turbo seals previously. Perhaps higher speed driving increases consumption vs town driving as the turbo is spinning at higher speeds/more continuously???  I hope it is not pistons either.  Given the car drives perfectly, i would be seriously surprised if the pistons were in a similar state to those in the photos on page 1 - surely there would be some other signs!! Cheers

Jamie...I think this is only the beginning. Mine two years ago was also drinking about 2-3 liters/10k km...but day by day I see an increase. Tried Castrol Edge (the worst), Motul, Liqui Moly Top Tech and now running with Miller's...except Castrol, all the others have same behavior and same consumption. I will revert with my findings after new year.

Be safe, stay safe and Happy New Year!

Cheers!

Cheers.  Interesting to hear that different oils had an effect! I run mine on Castrol Edge Constantly. I might try one of the other oils following a change.  I assume all are still VW 507.00 spec? Is there a big difference between consumption with Castrol vs the others?  The company i work for had a Mk3 Octavia Scout a few years ago as a pool car with the same 184ps engine and this had an appetite for oil from new that remained for the 60k miles the company had it. Seems a common problem, although i'm sure VW/Skoda will suggest it is a "Characteristic of the Vehicle"!!!

Happy new year!!

I no longer have my mk3 octy as I regrettably sold it due to the reason i had a mk2 octy vrs which had the same oil consumption as my recent mk3 and 12 months into ownership or 100k miles piston rings went on cylinder 4 even though the car ran spot on up until that dreaded day. As my mk3 octy just coming up 100k miles and with identical oil consumption i just didn’t want to take the risk. But after i sold the car i suddenly thought would a simple engine flush resolve the issue and prevent potential piston failure as it could just may be that carbon and sludge build up is causing the rings to stick.

Just curious to see if any of you have done an engine flush? As i wish now i would of done that before getting rid of the car as i truly miss driving it and regret selling it every day as it could of unknowingly done another 100k miles.

I saw few weeks ago some dude's doing engine flushing with Liqui Moly Pro Line and also some other....in theory....it should do some good regarding sludge and carbon build ups. I myself did not tried, but it's an ideea to start with.

Jamie, with Castrol oil consumption it's huge....1L/1k km....even more if driven hard. Best one was Liqui Moly, about 1L/5k km.... If car runs only city drive with occasional sprints....oil consumption is reduced considerably. If long trips, highways with prolonged sprints....mine can take 1L/2-3k km. So....it's a lot!

Any news on the issue?

Whilst i was trying to solve this issue someone once said that when the car is doing a regen it gets that hot the oil would thin that much it would seep past the rings and burn. My theory is that when the car was new and it would only regen every 300-400 miles oil consumption wouldn’t be as bad. But as these engine have fairly loose rings to help with economy and performance they naturally burn oil anyway. The ash from the oil that can’t be burnt off through a regen will gradually block the dpf which would cause the regen to happen sooner which means more oil would burn meaning more ash being stored in the dpf to the point where it would regen every 10 miles because the ash in the dpf is triggering a regen because of the differential pressure reading already being high from the ash so a small bit of soot will trigger a regen.

if anyone here is mechanically minded I would suggest removing dpf and getting it properly cleaned removing the ash so its as near new condition and then see how this effects the oil consumption and regens. Unfortunately removing the dpf isnt a straight forward task on these engines and i was quoted £1300 for removal, cleaning and refitting. But if you can do the removal and refit yourself the cleaning cost is only around £100-200.

Obviously £1300 is alot of money to spend on a car that could potentially need an engine rebuild or replacement but fingers crossed the piston ring failure in this post was a freak one off.

when i got rid of my car i had just had a new born baby, not getting any sleep and at the time couldn’t be doing with the stress of potentially a knackered engine. But now things at home have settled and my head is in the right place again i truely regret selling my octy. I wish now i would of taken dpf off and had it cleaned as im fairly certain the engine in my car was absolutely fine and it was just the stupid!! Dpf! Yet again causing more problems.

im seeing this issue popping up more and more. Hopefully a solution will be found soon.

Helloo guys.

Here some updates;

On my vRS replaced the dpf with a downpipe and remap, no changes in oil consumption (still running with Millers 5w30).  wanted to eliminate issue of frequent regens.

Tomorrow I will replace oil with Liqui Moly 5w40 and will see how it goes.

Friend of mine Thursday replaced the valve seal rings and still in trial mode, only did 400Km and oil seems to be at same point on the dip stick; fingers crossed.

What was that cost of that operation ? I'm suspecting the valve seal rings to be the culprit too ... ( I'm also from Romania )

How much did the dpf delete cost? Does it affect emissions hardly? Does the car smoke hard? (Sorry for the many questions, but I'm thinking of alternatives)

BogdanB, how is your oil consumption?

Modro can reply to your question about valve seal rings cots.

Regarding emissions, there are gases, it will be non euro:))  and also will be smoke....this depends on your tuner.

Ouch - that's not good.  I would be wanting to get that investigated.  Alternatively, get an oil change/filter done so you are starting with clean oil.

My TDI engine on my 2000mile Scout started using a little oil, but since I've been gentle with the use of the engine, the consumption has stopped.  I'm now on 28500 miles and oil levels are very good.  However, I tend to change my oil early [about every 15k], so that probably helps.  I use genuine VW/Skoda 504/507 Longlife oil.  Never had any issues.

Our previous TDI VRS did use a tiny amount of oil, but that was when it was 40C outside [trip to Czechia], so I'll forgive it that....only about 150ml needed to fix that problem.

Any news on the oil consumption?  Mine's also slurping about 1L / 2000km (mostly highway drive) with Castrol.

I'm thinking of using RAVENOL VMP USVO SAE 5W-30 next.

try liqui moly top tec 4200

Did the valve seal rings replacement fix the oil consumption?

Not really....

Very difficult these days with mechanics, as they are not mechanics anymore....most of them are only replacing parts....

Tried with all my mechanic buds to start an action on engine....all of them became unavailable LOL....

For the moment this job is postponed as I'm going back to work and leaving the country....if any of you out there proceed with this job, pls share your findings with us.

Cheers guys!

Hello, I also have a vRS TDI, its from 2015 and now it has 250.000 kilometers.

When I got the car at 180.000 km oil consumption was about 1L/3000km.

Now at the moment its 1L/2000km. Regeneration of DPF filter is  usually always ON:blink:

Today I contacted the importer for Škoda cars here in Slovenia and they can perform the action of weighing the oil.

After that they would send the data to Škoda factory and wait for answer what to do.

The cost for that would be around 200€, so I said thanks and good bye for now.

Next week I am planning to visit my mechanic and we will perform the compression test to see any abnormal pressure of the pistons.

I will post the results.

Thats for now, enjoy driving your vRs (until oil light goes on:worried:).
