Engine oil over consumption

Featured Replies

Hi all,

You'll have to excuse my ignorance as I know next to nothing about cars.

I bought a Skoda Octavia 2009 petrol engine second hand at the beginning of the year. Since then I've been having to top up engine oil every 650 miles or so.

Obviously this is too much and it seems like the problem may be the piston rings.

My question is, is it worth getting them replaced? It looks like it's going to be an expensive job and I'm wondering if it's worth it?

Will the problem get worse and if so how quickly? Will it render the car useless if I don't get the problem sorted?

Thanks in advance,

James

@James84 - I presume you mean 650 miles per litre? If so, then yes that's a lot.

As to the cause, can you hear a "whistle" when the engine is running at low revs? If so, that would suggest "piston slap", which does suggest worn rings. Has anyone done a dry and wet compression test? If so, did you get a rise in pressure in the results from the second wet test? If you did, then that indicates worn rings and/or glazed bores but there's no certain way of telling which without dismantling the engine.

Also, if you've only had the car 9 months, did you get a warranty with it? If so, then it may not be your problem.

Hi Ken,

Yes 650 miles per litre. Unfortunately I'm no longer in warranty. I did speak to my warranty company (before I knew I was outside of the warranty period) and they said it would have been treated as wear and tear anyway.

I know the engine isn't leaking and there's no soot build up around the exhaust or anything. I don't think I can hear a whistling noise but I'll be sure to listen out for it next time I take the car out.

I'll take it into my local garage and see if they can work out what the issue is. Ask them for a wet compression test.

Cheers,

James

Just another 1.8 TSI, engine code CDAA, am I right? Just search this forum under Octavia II, Superb II and Yeti, all have the same problems ... 1liltre per 650 miles, your are gonna to stop somewhere soon

Hi rayx,

I can live with having to top up every 650 miles. It's annoying as hell but as long as the car keeps going I can put up with it.

I'm just wondering how much life is left in the vehicle without an incredibly expensive fix? I appreciate it's probably impossible for you

guys to give me an answer but if you have any past experience with similar issues I'd love to know the outcome?

Bad oil consumption is a known problem on the TSI, you can ease it a bit by using a 5w40 oil if the car isn't doing a lot of miles a day, my own car does around 6-7 miles a day and did use a lot of oil, but since i changed grade of oil  it's no where near as bad as 650miles to a litre, it's now around 800 miles to a litre which for me is acceptable.

These 1.8tsi high oil consumption threads are becoming too common as a one pops up every couple of weeks with the new owner shafted with a oil burner.  May be there should be sticky in Octavia mk2 thread to warn potential owners of this on the 1.8 tsi?

Thanks for the info guys. Looks like they've dumped me with a stinker here. I'll speak to my local garage and see what they quote. Skoda brand garages seem to be a bit of a rip off.

Out of curiosity if I opt not to get it repaired, what's the likelihood of things getting significantly worse?

My newly acquired one is burning 1 litre in 350 miles it will get worse. Botley dealership have promised to fix it, it’s going in for compression tests in 10 days time

@wiilydog Sticky is already here, unfortunately only for Octavia II, oil burning issue together with timing tensioner + chain issues. But as said, same engine in Superb II and Yeti and other brands of VAG ...

@Nuclear_Jules I see your dealer does not know at all  So they have changed the turbocharger, it did not help obviously ... And now they want to do compression tests ... Trust me, it is useless, 1 litre on 350 miles is too bad already, that is 0,5 litre on only 175miles, allowed maximal consumption is up to 0,5 litre on at least 621 miles. Just let them look at the spark plugs

Clogged tiny mini drainage holes at oil control rings is the root cause of that all, prolonged driving with excessive oil consumption will melt down the exhaust valves together with pistons and spark plugs, cylinder walls will get scratched, catalyst blocked etc. ...

They have admitted that it’s not working as it should and will have it in for a week to fix it they say they need to do a compression test to figure out what’s wrong before they open it up.

They are aware of the piston ring problem.

They are a Skoda main dealer and have promised to fix it.

I'm going to speak to the dealership today. If the car is operating outside of acceptable consumption limits, would I have a case for s refund do you think? I bought it roughly five months ago. Thanks in advance!

Bought the car at the start of the year and now mid September. EDIT, Rougly 5 months ago i see.

Best get the dates exactly.

When did you first tell the seller of your concerns on oil use face to face or in writing?    Where did you buy it, from a trader / independent dealers?

Is this you going to tell them for the first time they sold you a dud?

Ok I'm in conversation now with the general manager. I bought it from Inchape VW in Twickenham. He currently seems like a reasonable chap and I'm to put everything into an email and then we can discuss either a refund or he can see what can be done to sort the car. After reading through that other thread I'm not pinning my hopes on anything. But if I'm successful I'll let you all know how I worked my magic. ;)

Moral of this thread, don't buy  second hand 1.8tsi......(in any model)

At least it was not bought from someplace the Technicians can say they have never heard of the issue.

If the manager says he has not, then ask when he started with a VW Main Dealer and when did he get his hearing back & was life difficult being Blind and Deaf!

Ok, I've put this in writing as requested by the manager. Fingers crossed.

Hi Shaun,
As requested I have put everything down thus far into an email.
We purchased a Skoda Octavia for £4500 from VW Twickenham (LG59 UHM) around five months ago.
Unfortunately the car had two large mechanical issues with it from the day of purchase that we were unaware of.

Problem 1: The day after purchase my car unexpectedly shuddered to a halt and lost power. I had no idea what was going on and thought it may have been a problem with how I was driving the vehicle so I ignored it. However, it happened again and again. This is obviously very unsafe and I was often traveling with my girlfriend and baby in the car. After VW Twickenham told me they couldn't look at the vehicle as it was a Skoda I took it to Lookers Skoda West London who informed me the vehicle needed a new Mechatronics unit at the cost of £1800. Car Care Plan after much deliberation agreed to pay for the repair once they had received the correct paperwork from your garage stating the car had received pre-sale safety checks. After nothing happened for a few days I phoned Car Care Plan who said they had denied the payment as VW Twickenham could not supply the correct paperwork and they had only received a hand written note from one of VW's mechanics. After nearly a week of me playing middle man between Car Care Plan and VW Twickenham, the correct paper work was "found" and the repair was paid for.

The ongoing issue I'm having at the moment in with engine oil consumption. I've been needing to put a litre of oil into the car every 600 / 650 miles. The user manual states (on page 163 of the PDF) that it is normal for the car to consume 0.5 litres every 1000km. Obviously my consumption is way over at nearly double that. I brought the car into VW Twickenham and Brendan asked me to drive 500 miles and then return the vehicle for further inspection. I have now done that and the outcome was that the car is indeed consuming far too much engine oil.

After a bit of research on Skoda and mechanic forums it appears this is a very well known issue with these engines and it is likely to get far worse quickly. To the point where the car isn't in a fit state to drive.

After reviewing the consumer rights act it is obvious that the car was sold in an unsatisfactory state and also not fit for purpose. It's apparent that the previous owner once realizing the amount of work that needed doing to the car has sold it to your garage which in turn has sold the (for want of a better word) 'broken' car on to me. I'm not the sort of person to kick up a fuss and want to sort out these issues in as civil way as possible. However, I also am not in a financial position to be able to lose this money.

I am entitled to a repair, replacement or refund. Obviously we're not expecting a replacement, but I would like to discuss either having the car repaired to a satisfactory state or me returning the car for a full refund.

Please feel free to contact me either by email or telephone. (Removed)

Thank you for your time,
James

Removed phone number

@James84 - You might want to edit that to at least remove your mobile number and possibly other details...

Nice courteous letter, and to the point. Yes edit your personal details out please.

Good luck for a speedy and successful outcome.

As the garage or subsequent owners (via auction) may be tempted to palm it off on another unsuspecting victim, I would be tempted to leave the Reg no.

I've flagged the post to a moderator to remove the phone number, I guess the edit function has timed out by now.

Done. If they take it back from me I will post the reg as a new thread on here.

I put a report to a mod to ask them to do it for you.  Edit from the original post as you are timed out from doing it.

Good letter.

Sadly a common issue,  their first mistake was not looking at the car because not a Skoda Dealership,  they have all the gear and should have techs with more than an idea.

But surely a VW dealership knows all about 1.8tsi issues? Or do they think Skoda is a Fiat brand?
