1. Its broken

2. Its broken

3. Its broken

?

1. The lever's broken.

2. Where it attaches is broken.

3. The fastener that secures it (if there's one) has come loose.

I have nothing to compare it to can anyone tell?

I can tell you have nothing to compare it to

The spines moulded inside the release hand wear down very easily resulting in handles which don't work or fall off.

You can buy a filling adhesive for polypropylene which will stick the handle on - permantly - but at £15 or so plus shipping it's probably cheaper to buy a new handle.

I'll try to post a part number later when I get back home.

The handle has a little pincer clip that holds it all together... looks like yours is gone, probably snapped and fallen out somewhere so my money is on that.

If you look at the image before you start the clip, the open sections at 3 & 9 o'clock are where it clips across:  look very carefully at 3 seconds in when it's square face on and you'll notice the inside edges of what look like the main body circle aren't completely symmetrical; the right hand side is more 'pointed' and the left hand side almost has a tooth on the lip. Once you've got that, you push the handle on as you do already, THEN push the clip across and it holds it all on. Mine used to do it as it was weakened/broken so I went down the scrap yard, got a replacement clip and it hasn't done it since. (The clip also completes the aperture in that circle bit to make the handle appear solid, if that makes sense?)

I think Iam missing the clip must have gone long ago. Can it be bought separately or just a complete new handle? I have added some pictures of just the handle close up last is the aperture.

Handle is item 28 on the diagram below. When picking the part number check for rhd  or lhd and your appropriate trim colour:

Thanks for that I just lifted the par number of my part also in the pictures same as your part number bar a single digit guess that's the trim colour 1J2 823 533C

Ah, that's it! That final picture is where the clip slides into. No idea if you can get it separate or not, but you're deffo missing it if you have nothing that fits in there. Would imagine it's either a whole new handle or a trip to the scrappy... and one off ANY octy down there!

That cutaway bit you can see on the left hand side of the central spine as you look into the gap is what the clip, erm, clips around. Sort of works like a circlip of sorts, if that makes sense, and stops the handle from dropping off the spigot fixed in the car which you push the handle onto. When you get one and see it, you'll get it straight away before you even fit it! ;)

...feel free to hit the 'ANSWERED' button!! :D

How do you mark something as answered ?

Hah, was only joking but I've no idea, just seen it on here before! :giggle:

Now I'm home and can look at stuff on a man-size screen instead of squinting at my mobile I've had another look at both the parts explosion and the workshop manual diagrams and there's no suggestion anywhere of a clip or any other sort of retaining device for the handle - other than the push-on splines.

A further look at skoda-parts.com shows two options for the lhd handle (they are in Czech so don't offer the rhd part) and neither (Skoda or pattern) suggest a clip of any sort: https://www.skoda-parts.com/spare-part/1j1823533cb41-handle-for-the-bonnet-lock-skoda-10348.html

It's clear a clip has been used, I'm just surprised the parts diagram doesn't show it as they're usually pretty particular about listing everything.

I think the clip is an "e-clip" like these here: http://www.bearingshopuk.co.uk/orings-seals-clips/circlips/?limit=250&spur_type=31357

We'll need some enterprising soul to measure the diameter of the groove on the release ... Any volunteers out there? :)

BTW it looks like all Fabia, Octavia and Roomster mk2 are the same.  The third character in the part number indicates the side of the road (1J1 = lhd, 1J2 = rhd) and the suffix indicates the colour (none or B41).

Yes, an e-clip is what I meant when I said circlip, but it amounts to the same thing. It's not actually an e-clip, just that similar shape moulded in plastic, cos you need to be able to take it easily in & out for removal purposes, and if you look on that czech part page you can clearly see the square bit where the clip has filled the hole in the side of the handle.

Btw, i would NOT be trying to get an e-clip like the ones linked on that thing cos, as already stated, you have to be able to get the handle off if required: the proped moulded bit works perfectly and is easy to get.... you put an eclip on it, you wil absolutely struggle to get it back out cos it's not a large enough hole to get removal tools in easily!! It's not the strongest thing in how it acts, but does the job more than fine cos the forces used/required are perpendicular, much like a brick pillar is strong in compression but if you push it from the side it's easy to knock over. There's not much space down there, and you would need a tool to retrieve an e-clip, whereas the proper thing comes out without too much effort cos it's quite a large block of plastic. E-clip not recommended, but your call. :)

Here you go, now you can see the clip properly. :)

The lesson here is if you think a part is broken, put in the part number on ebay and see what comes up... it may show you what it's supposed to look like! :D

I would suggest trying that eBay seller. Offer a fiver, then haggle from there. You can then fit the whole new lever or keep it as a spare or even sell it on.

Good find there :)  And it's now clear exactly what the clip looks like and I agree an e-clip is not the best answer.

A word of caution, however: the "roadside code" for that item is "1" which is for a left-hand drive vehicle. The correct part for right-hand drive would have a "2" as the third character - ie. "1J2 ...".  Also note the colour code "B41" for black and the version number "C".

Might be worth messaging the seller to see if they can provide a RHD part.  Otherwise you have a budget option from ^earlier (eBay repair kit) or grasp your wallet firmly in both paws and go visit your local friendly Skoda dealer ...

Added info.

Scrap yard is the way to go fella. ;)

The clip will be universal, left and right will be the same, trust me.

Another one joins the broken bonnet release club - the spindle on the actual bracket has snapped off. Terrible design!

Hi,

I am a new member, literally just joined about half an hour ago. Hello everybody.

Hopefully someone can advise me on a problem I am having with my bonnet release lever on my 2011 Octavia.

I have been having a similar issue where the bonnet release lever kept popping off when I was trying to open the bonnet. I was having to grip the top of the lever and the outside of the car with a sort of clamping motion with one hand while pulling the lever with the other hand to get the bonnet open. This was pretty difficult, and didn't always work. I took the lever off and looked at the splines holding it on and realised some of them were broken, so I decided to buy a new one.

At this point I didn't realise there was a clip to hold the lever in place (as the old one didn't have one), I thought it just slid on and locked in place via the splines.

I have got the new one now, and have tried several times to fit it, but I haven't been able to get the plastic clip in place as there is no room at the back of the lever when it is fitted on the spigot. Consequently, the new one also pops off when I try to use it unless I clamp the lever as before. I don't think it will take too long for the splines to end up broken if I was to continue doing this.

Does anyone know if there is a special technique to getting this plastic clip  fitted?

Rgds,

Dave.

Fit the plastic clip to the lever and then push the whole assembly onto the splined shaft - worked for me!
