Octavia 1.0tsi SE Tech - Experiences?

Featured Replies

Just wanted to check if there are any owners/drivers of the above on the forum who could share their experiences of the car with that engine?

There's an absolutely stonking lease deal around at the moment - £2.4k down with £60 per month (for a private user).

I'm looking to get a fun car for around £3-£5k when my current lease deal comes to an end in a few months, but have fears that the fun car (probably a Legacy R Spec B or an Alfa 159 3.2 Q4) will probably not be terribly reliable (esp the Alfa, I know the Scooby is pretty bullet proof having had one for a number of years).

So was thinking of coming in nearer the £3k, and putting £2k or so down on an extra cheap lease for a more day to day car. At £60/month, its a no brainer for the Octy!

However, does it feel underpowered and what's it like to live with that engine day to day? I'll be getting a manual one.

Thanks

And this one, which has lots of talk about lease deals and the 1.0 TSI:

I've just ordered one myself. If you don't intend to regularly drive with a big load and big miles, the 1.0 should be fine by all accounts.

Thanks for that @maffyou.

Deal I found was with Central UK Vehicle Leasing and is for £2,400 up front and £60 per month over 23 months. Total of £3.8k plus and admin fee. That’s for a standard SE Tech manual. Sounds like it’s par for the course...

You’re welcome. It does seem to be around the same sort of figures, yes, but it’s still a cracking deal, if you ask me!

i went with a 1+23 deal which was about £167 a month for the 1.0 SE Tech DSG hatch. That was with Leasehub.

The SE Tech has a huge PCH contribution at the moment, so deals will vary, however Simpsons Skoda always seem to be the first to advertise such deals, which helps start things off.

https://www.simpsonsskoda.co.uk/pch-offers/se-tech-offer/

I ordered in September when the 1.0 DSG was £99 a month, with £2,490 down - however no sooner had I ordered, the prices dropped to £85 a month and the dealership kindly matched post order!

Worth noting, all SE Tech deals at the moment are in Energy Blue. You will have to pay extra for any other paint etc.

In terms of driving, I'm actually one of those who blindly ordered without test driving. But I have heard a lot of positive comments from people who have driven them and I ordered it as a run about/short journeys (I mostly cycle and hate the stress of second hand cars.)

I would get your order in today/tomorrow if you want to take advantage of the contributions, as I understand they end close of play tomorrow.

I blindly ordered too  Similarly, this was based on lots of reading (reviews and owner reports) as well as knowing the 1.0 was similar in power to my current car but faster on paper too, so knew it would be fine.

Im also pretty low mileage these days as my work commute is a tiny 1.5 miles and even with school runs added in its no more than 8 on the daily grind. So it’s just that, the usual weekend stuff and the occasional jaunt to Devon/Cornwall/airport or wherever for a holiday.

I did consider the 1.5 which is also on a decent price at the moment, but I really wanted the DSG so it had to be the 1.0 (for some reason you can’t get the 1.5 with DSG in SE Tech).

Seems like we're literally in the same boat ;)

I love driving, so when I do, I want it to be a comfortable, enjoyable drive. The SE Sport I have ticked every box apart from the DSG/ACC and a few techno toys. Shame I will be going backwards in someways, but since I literally don't do the miles I used to, I can live without a few of those things (namely sports seats and bi-xenon lights.)

I wanted the 1.5 too, but only because I have a 1.4 TSI with the same power, however to get around that, I have found a tuning box that brings the power/torque to what I am used to, however fully appreciate that it's a 3-pot engine, so not expecting a massive improvement.

That ALL being said, the amount of people I have heard say that the little 1.0 engine really surprised them is testament to it self. I have driven similar sized cars with similar sized engines and they too really surprise you in the performance. So I have no concerns what so ever.

Thanks for the view @gRoberts I'll get a shuffle on with the deal. I'll likely be buying blind as well if it expires tomorrow as I won't get a chance to test drive, but at the end of the day I'm getting it as a tool whilst waiting for the right fun car! Pleased that the SE Tech is very well specd, its got most of the toys that my Golf GTD had a couple of years ago, albeit I'll have to put up with a chilly backside in the winter without heated seats .

I've got a lease company I have used a lot, so am going to see what they can come up with today, and then call my local Skoda garage to see if they can match (Garlands in Aldershot). Finger crossed!

Shame about the colour, I much prefer the red as the blue looks quite flat on the conifgurator...

I originally paid extra to get the Corrida Red, however when they matched the price change from £99 to £85 a month, they swallowed the cost and I ultimately got it for free.

I have a Race Blue Octavia at the moment and it's a lovely colour, however when seeing Energy Blue compared to it, it looked like the old Astra G, which all company cars came in that dull blue:

Appreciate it's not THAT bad, but just my opinion.

I'm not 100% certain on the contributions whether they will extend into November, as the deal I originally went for was order before 30/09, but of course they then dropped the prices even more in October. So you never know, but worth discussing with a Skoda dealership directly. They will have more clout than brokers.

  • Author

Thanks for that.

Also, for anyone who's interested, my local Skoda dealer (Garlands, Aldershot) have said the Octavia SE Tech deal extends to 13 November...

I'm just waiting to get quotes, and also looking to see if I can get a 1.5TSi for not much more as it sounds like that's the peppier engine!

If you're not wanting DSG, then based on my experience of the 1.4 TSI with the same power, I would recommend it.

Good to know re being extended till November - knowing my luck, they'll reduce it even more :D

I'll keep you posted with what deal I end up with, if its lower maybe you can negotiate again!

Here's a question for you, @gRoberts (and any others).

I've got the quotes back from Garlands Skoda. With £2,400 deposit, the 1.0tsi SE Tech is coming out at £59.92 per month, and the 1.5tsi SE Tech is coming out at £85.21 per month.

Would you pay an extra £581.67 over 2 years for the 1.5 engine over the 1.0?

I'm trying to organise a test drive of both of the engines, but will probably end up settling for a drive in a 1.4 as they don't have any 1.5 Octavias at the moment.

Also, the lead time on a 1.0 is now 20-24 weeks :o and even the 1.5 is 17-19 weeks (according to them)

depends on how often you'll be fully loaded and demanding of the engine. I find it to be enough, but can understand if you're punting around with a full boot all the time that the 1.0 may not be the best choice.

I did hit nigh on 65mpg at the weekend... in a 1.0TSi, lightly loaded.

Pretty much what @brettikivi said - everyone uses their cars differently but ultimately for most casual uses, the 1.0 should be perfectly fine.

If you're waiting a bit of poke behind it, then the 1.5 would naturally be the way to go, but the difference is not just the monthly payments, but your insurance etc too.

Luckily, I got my order in early, so mines being built this week with a 3 week turn around from there. The downside, is my current car is not due to go back until 05/12, which could mean I have two cars for more than a week, where the free insurance will expire :(

  • Author

Thanks @gRoberts and @brettikivi.

I'm test driving the 1.0tsi tomorrow (hopefully) so if I think it will do the job, then order will be placed. If it feels to sluggish to me, then I'll go for the 1.5.

Hoping the 1.0 feels fine as although its only an extra £582 over 2 years, that's still around an extra 15%, for a car that's only around 4-5% more expensive in the first place. The bargain hunter in me just wants to maximise the bargain nature of the deal!

I'll keep you posted...

P.S. Difference on insurance, like for like, is £3/year! Obviously there may be a little more fuel consumed by the 1.5, but given my low mileage (and the fact my fun car is likely to be a V8!) its unlikely to be a factor. Its all down to whether I could handle driving the 1.0 coming from a 280bhp Merc...

Keep in mind that you do not own nor are you the registered keeper of the vehicle (i.e. no V5) which some insurance companies will charge you more for.

Good shout, I had forgotten to select that it's leased. Fortunately, made no difference to the quotes (with Churchill) so still a negligible difference between 1.0 and 1.5 (got my sums wrong, is in fact £5.60/year!).

Just comes down to £580 difference on the lease cost over 2 years vs whether I can live with a 1.0. Looking forward to the test drive.

If I do get the 1.0, will be the smallest engined car I have ever used on a regular basis!

BTW, @gRoberts I would give Garland Skoda Aldershot a call (Jordan is the PCH chap) and ask them to quote on the car you have ordered. Then use that to see if you can get Simpsons to move down a bit.

Reason I say this is that I can see the deals on Simpsons and the manual 1.0TSI deal is £10/month more than Garland quoted me (Simpsons is £2,490 + 23 x £69, Garland quoted £2,400 + 23 x £59.92), so it would stand to reason that the Garland DSG quote would be around £10 less too, so over £200 over the length of the lease.

It might be that they push back and say that you've got the Corrida red, which pretty much covers the additional (Garland said Corrida red or the white would increase my monthlies by £7-£8/month, they're only offering energy blue for free), but its worth a try!

You could always spec the heated seats. With any extras the costs are essentially just divided across the term of the agreement, so heated seats would probably add roughly £10 extra a month. Likewise with the special paint. Simpson's quoted me £6 extra for the special paint.

The more I look at pictures of the Energy Blue, the more I'm pretty happy with it.

Funnily enough, I was just browsing another thread on energy blue! On the configurator, it looks awful, but actually in the flesh, like above and in the thread I was browsing, it actually looks fine!

I'm going to save my money, and either go for a standard spec, Energy Blue 1.0 or 1.5. Thermal undies will be cheaper than £10/month, and anything to avoid holding up the build time! My Merc lease ends at the end of Mar 19, and, if I go for the 1.0, lead times take us up to...... end of March 19! Its gonna be close!

BTW @maffyou are those the standard wheels too?

Cheers mate, but I ordered directly through a local dealer, who matched Simpson's prices and then chucked in paint.

FYI, they don't openly advertise PCH deals, because they don't really make anything from them. From what I understand, they get a nominal amount, e.g. £500 per PCH and everything they give you outside of the contributions cuts into that.

I originally ordered 1.0 TSI DSG with Corrida Red, for £99 a month and £2,500 down. When the prices dropped, they matched the £85 a month and then told me the initial was £2,490, and that the paint was chucked in for free.

The dealership knows I value them and I think since I'm a returning customer, they were kind back. My closest dealership is Lookers and they're absolute garbage in comparison. In fact, I'm still waiting for them to get back to me, 4 years ago to arrange a test drive. They didn't even want my custom this time around either.

I don't think they're the standard wheels, not on the SE Tech at least. I just found that picture a few days ago when I was looking for actual photos of energy blue colour. I think the standard wheels are those 5 spoke ones (that look fairly ordinary), can't remember the name.

I very nearly went for the heated seats then just decided it was really not worth it for my tiny commute.

16" Velorum Wheels are as standard.
