In a word yes. Auto-hold is a bit like Marmite - some people love it and  some hate it. Try setting it on or off over a couple of weeks and see how you get on.

A mistake is to keep pressing the throttle until it moves.

 

Best to momentarily lightly dab and release the throttle, this will take the brake off and then it will start to creep. Then if you want to go faster, press the throttle again.

 

As said you can try it without auto-hold but I only do this when I’m backing up to the trailer. I don’t bother for parking, just dab the throttle.

I do as @nicknorman suggests. A light dab of throttle will release the brake and let it creep. Apply more throttle if required.

Yes, you have found the answer. When you are maneovering in tight situations it can get a bit sticky.

In day to day driving I find it very useful.

 

A lot of posts before me have suggested dabbing the throttle, this is very effective. I still have to be careful when I am reversing from my steep driveway, sometimes a dab can make it shoot back.:sweat:

To be fair, it's an easy button t press if you need it. I certainly would want it on more than off, but if you need to just push it and do what you need to do.

With the brake pedal pressed, you can manually release the park brake (red light) or autobrake  (green light) using the park brake switch.  Handy if you're in a really tricky spot.

The thing I dislike the most is the fact that it shows an Octavia on the maxidot (when turning on ACC for example) :biggrin:

The ACC works in that it will accelerate and brake by itself in traffic.

 

How do I prove/disprove that Front Assist works? I haven't had any warnings from it despite setting it to "Early" and driving too close for comfort just to see  if it triggers. Obviously don't want to do something really dangerous.

If front assist isnt working it will throw a fault up. I have tested it unintentionally a couple of times and it does slam on the brakes for you. You get the audible "beep" along with the red car symbol with lines around it on the maxidot as an initial warning. If thats ignored then it will slam on

I've had the beep a couple of times, both times it was a car leaving the main road in front of me. I could see that he would clear before I got there but, as I hadn't touched the brakes, the car got a bit stressed.:D

Yeah thats when it happened to me on one of the occasions too!

A few things you can check @ChaybobbTidbit. First make sure Front Assist is enabled in the infotainment system (press Car / Settings / Driver Assistance). Make sure the front assist is active, and set the distance for the warning. Then start the car and press the assist button on the steering wheel (button C in the diagram). From memory this brings up a list of the assistance systems with a tick against each that is active. Scroll up / down with the wheel and check Front Assist has a tick against it.

Then, while still stationary, turn off the stability control using the ESC button near the gear / DSG selector (shown below). In the maxi-dot it will say "Front Assist unavailable". Press the ESC button again to turn it back on and the front assist unavailable message disappears demonstrating Front Assist is working again.

If you want more concrete evidence / proof, try this - carefully. If you are "too close" to the car in front at speeds above c40mph, you will get the first symbol you showed in your post (shown below) coming up on the maxi-dot. But be warned, it is small in real life and could easily be missed. This can be tested safely on the motorway by engaging ACC and setting the ACC distance to the furthest setting*, then accelerating gently towards the vehicle in front (effectively over-riding the ACC). You will still be a safe distance behind as long as you have set ACC distance to its furthest setting when the symbol below appears. It goes without saying this should only be tried on a straight stretch of motorway in dry, clear conditions, and only for the short time it takes for you to see that the symbol has appeared.

The final symbol you show (copied below) and the automatic braking is, in my experience, a rare occurrence. FYI on my car, like @Adrian55555's, the symbol is red not white. Unlike the symbol above it covers the whole of the maxi-dot display. I really wouldn't recommend trying to test it as the one time mine triggered for real the distance to the car in front was very small (a car dived out into the outside lane of the motorway directly in front of me - I'm pretty sure the driver never even saw me).

Like Adrian and @facet edge, mine has triggered "in error" more often than it has triggered for real. I too have had it flash up when someone in front is exiting the motorway, and once in an almost exact replica of one of the scenarios the manual warns about, shown below. A blip on the throttle cancels the warning.

As others have said, if the system is unavailable, you will see a warning in the maxi-dot. 

 

* To set the ACC to its furthest distance setting, engage ACC then push the toggle switch on the top of the ACC stalk to the right until it shows the maximum number of solid horizontal white bars - from memory it is five, which seems to be confirmed from this diagram from the manual below. In this diagram only three bars are "activated", so just toggle the switch to the right until all of them are shown as solid white.
