Correct way to start a dsg car

Featured Replies

Apologies if this has been asked. Can't find in search. I'm waiting for my Superb SE L DSG and been reading the instructions in the meantime. This is my first automatic car in 40 years of driving. So, car parked and left in P. Should the car be started in P with foot break applied or should it be in N? Also after parking should the DSG be placed in P before or after the engine has been turned off? Many thanks, Rich

Additional information

Leave in ‘P’, switch ignition to on, wait for all warning lights to cycle, depress brake pedal and press the start button.

Once stopped at the end of the day, select ‘P’ and switch off.

The DSG clutches look after themselves and the ‘P’ mode puts a pawl (locking pin) into place to lock the gearbox output shaft with the gearbox already being in Neutral.

Mine arrived this week, and it seems to have a built-in nanny that forces you to be in P with the brake pedal pressed when starting.

Though there may be wrinkles I have not yet found.

Oh, and I am told that leaving the parking brake and headlights on Auto is the best way.

And switching the stop-start off every time because it is a PITA.

Skoda Karoq diesel dsg. Probably same for others. Gear in P. Press Start/Stop button to bring systems alive. Foot on brake, press Start/Stop button. Engine starts.

D in Daylight, worked fine.

R when it started Raining. shot backwards and hit the car behind.

N for Normal, just revved up and wouldn't move.

Thank you all for your prompt replies. Nice to hear you're all agreeing on the same method. I'll also take on board your other comments. Rich

Don’t worry - the car will instruct you if you don’t do the right thing! :D

Depends on what you think is ‘best’.

Auto hold (I assume what you meant by parking brake?) I always leave this on.

Headlights I switch off all the time and then onto Auto when lights are needed (I have rear DRL’s coded on my car so there are always lights on the back)

start-stop I also coded out.

'Big brother watching', Actually the car's a machine, therefore a lady. So it must be 'Big sister/moma is watching you'! Rich

I keep Stop Start on myself, but each to their own

The applicable gender here is probably "martian".

I'm 'normal'. I never assume gender, looks can be deceptive. What matters is the person inside. I'm very broad minded and have friends of all gender including trans. 65+ years of experience should make one tolerant. Rich

How not to start a car.

activate handbrake before leave brake pedal

That depends on whether you have the auto handbrake on. When you switch off, the green brake light will change to red as it applies the handbrake.

It can be started in 'N', if it was stopped in 'N'.   You might not ever want to do this but you can if you wanted to.  Say the car was being rolled / pushed in N with no engine running and no Autohold or E-Brake on..

It will not do it at a temperature below -0*C.  I think that is -10*oC or so.

Is there a way to bypass depressing the brake pedal before starting when the car is in P and hand brake on? Just seems an unnecessary step as car is not going to go anywhere?

It can be going against the 'pawl' in the DSG,

so best just use your foot on brake when putting into 'P' even if the Parking / E-brake or Autohold is on, and the same when starting in 'P' IMO.

I have only 1 foot and have never seen the issue with using it on a brake pedal. What do you want to do with it if not putting on the brake pedal,

it is sitting there on the floor anyway, you do not need it on the accelerator.

Or Klingon.

Just to mention that you have no choice about leaving the gear selector in P until after you have started - the lever is physically locked in the P position when the engine/ignition is off. Well it is on my Kessy version anyway.

Also worth mentioning that you can't move the gear selector from N to D unless you press the brake pedal, OR unless the car is already moving faster than some slow figure like 5mph. You can move the selector from D to R and back to D without pressing the brake if you are quick - within a second or two to go either way. This is to allow you to "rock" the car on snow/ice.

When stopping the car with an older automatic it is important to put the hand brake on before switching the ignition off, because there is a small pawl in the gearbox that if you were on a hill and the car rolled it could strain that pawl. However with the modern Superb there are all sorts of automatic stops that reduce that happening, but I like to make sure. The starting procedure of putting your foot on the footbrake is a fail safe method built in, to make sure one doesn't start an automatic and it moving off out of control. I have heard of that happening with an older automatic car, with two passengers in the back, one was my mother. The men had been working under the bonnet to get it started.
