Rip off merchants!

Changed the wiper blades on my parents Yeti in the last few days.

Took it in to the main dealer for a brake fluid change today and they've just rung me to say the engineer has just noticed it needs new wiper blades.

I told them this had just been done and that they must have looked at the wrong vehicle.

She was flummoxed (wish I could have seen her face) and tried to sound surprised.

I told her to leave it as the blades on the car were new.

How many people cave in and say yes without checking themselves?

Just goes to show.

Not as bad as the stunts VW tried on me. First referred to stating front brake pads needed replacing. With about 7mm on them they went on for another 50K. Second was even worse. One of the engine bay fans would not turn off as the control unit had gone. They tried to tell me I needed two fan kits at £700 each. I said no, check with parts department I need I fan kit comprising two fans.

I never went back there for a service.

My chauffeur pal was just using the main dealer for servicing to keep up his warranty (A skoda in 2002) he had changed the brake pads himself the night before dropping the car off for service, got the phone call, brake pads 75% worn,  he should give the go ahead to have them changed

He said he was surprised as they had "recently been replaced" oh but how many miles ago sir? was the response, he said let me see, it took me 20 minutes walking back after dropping the car off so less than 2 miles :D

.slightly "off topic", but just got 3 new wiper blades (2 front one rear) on-line from "Carparts4less".

Total cost about £5, +paid £2 for 2 day delivery and they arrived (and I fitted them) the next day!

Will defo use them again.  (....and I am nothing to do with the Company!)

Picked the Yeti up this afternoon.

Checked all the wipers and they are perfect ,as expected,as they are new.

The car was washed and valeted, maybe as an apology although nothing was said after I'd challenged their 'findings' ealier.

Got to be worth a mention in the dealer review section?

I'll wait until the warranty expires in 3 weeks;)

Having been in the Motor Trade for 48 years, I'm usually reluctant to knock them as I've been on the recieving end of customers "trying it on".

"You fixed my brakes last month and they've gone again!" - "No, sir, we replaced your front brake pads and now it's a leaking REAR brake cylinder".

HOWEVER I was annoyed/amused/dismayed when I was told that it would be good to have a cambelt change on my 2013 petrol Yeti - he was covered in confusion when I told him that it had a camchain.

My brake pads grow never need changing me thinks , first mot at the dealers the front pads were 30% worn , a year later they are 20% worn, next mot my theory ? they will be 10% ?? :dull:

One of my kids had knocked the rear air vent open / close dial, I thought it was broken as it was showing white and not rubber. Asked the dealer for a price to sort it out during service,  told £165 because of the parts cost and labour, so I said no.

When I got home i took the vent out (old credit card to prize it out)  inspected it, found the knob had been over rotated, relocated it, refitted it, tested it, all in less than 5 minutes in total. If I’d had a spare one I could have swapped it out in 20 seconds.

Rip off dealers?

On a similar subject, I had a phone call to say that during my MOT they had noticed my back light out and fitted a new bulb.

Brilliant, apart from the fact that my back lights are LED. Much shuffling and coughing later, said bulb and fitting was removed from the bill because, "We got the cars mixed up."

I enjoyed that.

It's not just VW.....  My Dad's got a Kia Cee'd (well at least it's a bit better than the Vauxhall Vectra it replaced.....)

He was getting main dealer services to keep the 7 year warranty (they weren't a lot more expensive than other VAT registered places he got quotes from) and after the first MOT, they flagged up his front brake pads and tyres were worn and would need replacing before the next MOT.

Well he's had the car nearly 9 years, only does about 6K miles per year.  All 4 tyres were replaced a couple of years ago, mainly because they were starting to crack and the brakes were done last year :D

So by some miracle, the tyres and brakes that would need replacing within a year lasted another 3 and 4 years (respectively).

Have you complained?

If we all roll-over and accept it then they'll never change.

Give them a chance to explain their version of events, and if you still believe they were being deliberately deceitful then let Skoda UK know and use the power of social media to warn other prospective customers.

Sadly my attitude with car dealerships is now guilty until proven innocent,I just don't trust any of them anymore.

Each to their own, I'd be making it known that they've been caught out, and ask them what they plan to do as way of an apology.

A spare set of wiper blades left on the passenger seat will do nicely thank you.

I will be making it known in the way of a formal complaint on behalf of my elderly parents.

Disgusting behaviour. I don't understand the mentality of these people. It's a form of theft.

  • 2 weeks later...

How did it go Rick.

I detest this sort of behavior by dealers.

Surely they have enough work on. Or do they?

My fellow biker, currently has a dispute on  with a M/C dealer.

Terrible service, poor workmanship & no you cant have your bike back till you pay.

(its ongoing)

And ref, front brake pads, its amazing how long they last even half worn.

Dealer said my pads were 44% worn at 27k and the discs had a lip. One of the rear back tyres had only 4mm tread left so was an advisory. The invoice priced up the replacement of discs at £224 and a tyre at £86 if I authorised the go ahead. I just ignored the advisories but if I was a dear little old lady they would have gone ahead and fleeced me. The Skoda garage had been taken over and I noticed that under the previous owners I was charged £29 for a sump of Shell Helix Ultra but under the new owners I was invoiced £59 for a sump full of Castor Edge even though I had  parts discount for it to tally with the Skoda fixed service price of £269. When you pick up the car always check that things have been done correctly. I noticed two screws on the air box were only half screwed down and one was missing. As an apology they gave me a free aircon service.

...Having read that, I usually get them posted free, rather then a cost option to be here quicker. They usually DO arrive in a few days anyway so unless you really-really need them quick, save the dough

My car came back from its service with the oil filler cap just sitting loosely in its hole. Fortunately could fall off the car as bonnet too close. By the time I noticed a few weeks later when I refilled the washer bottle, the top of the engine was coated in a sheen of oil blown out the top.

What did the dealer do by way of an apology?
