  • Agreed! Seems more cars are sold on gizmos and gadgets than on anything else now. Since when was it so difficult to dip headlights, stay in a lane or park a car?

Mine does not auto dip, but maybe spec has changed?

Still shows as a £200 extra on the configurator.

bugger! should have got that - too late now!

(Light assist IIRC) Is it a feature coming together with ACC package?

Light assist doesn't seem to come bundled with anything else - not even the driver assistance package which does include ACC,  The Auto light assist claims to include dipping rear mirror and light and rain assist but, in the UK at least, these are standard on all models.

I liked the idea of auto main beam but in practice, it seems a bit slow to react and you get flashed occasionally by the oncoming traffic - not helped because the Karoq LED headlights are so good.

Given the number of drivers who wait until they can physically see you before dipping their headlights, I'd hope High Beam Assist is more intelligent?

By the time the oncoming car turns off their main beam the damage is done, they might as well have not bothered.

I've got it in the TT but it's another of those things I can gladly do without and never use it. So unless its comes as standard I'd never spec it.

The light assist in the Karoq (£200 option) is much better than the system I had in my Octavia (included in SE L spec), being much quicker to react in both on & off situations. Well worth the outlay IMO.

The TT is a great car and a keeper but even though it's a 2014 car it's a bit behind the times as regards spec. Not that I care though, especially when I've got the roof down.

But as regards the sensible car i.e. Yeti replacement, I do need to have a more open mind and consider that things like that have moved on given LED headlights etc. now.

I had it in the qashqai and it was great on my long crossed country commute. The LED headlights have such a better reach and spread on the Karoq that I don't miss having it at all and haven't felt the need to manually switch to full beam on the same journeys. I am seriously impressed by the LED setup. The fog light illumination on turn in still seems a bit of a gimmick though

I passed a Volvo XC60 last night, which appeared to have High Beam Assist, but rather than a simple on/off, it was illuminating, extinguishing and adjusting multiple LED's within the headlight cluster all at the same time.

It was a pitch black country lane, slightly misty and our closing speeds were quite slow so I got to see the headlights working. As the car I was following got close to the Volvo I saw an LED turn off, as the car passed it turned back on, and as I got closer turned off again. It looked very impressive, loads of light output but I wasn't once dazzled.

The only criticism might be, to those that don't know what they're seeing, is that as the LED's turn on and off, it could be misconstrued as the driver flashing their headlights.

Unfortunately not. It detects the headlights of oncoming cars rather than the light they make.

The most obvious mistake it makes is coming towards lorries in a dip, you can clearly see the running lights they tend to have along the top but it won't drop the main beams until the headlights appear.

I paid the extra for the Auto Light assist on my Karoq Edition. How does it work? I leave the light switch on "Auto" but do I have to leave the main beam on all the time or just use it manually when I feel necessary? What does the "Auto" in Auto Light Assist" actually do?

Auto light assist, whilst good in theory, cannot compensate for you seeing lights coming round a corner and dipping the lights manually, nor seeing cab marker lights on top of a lorry/truck etc. If you leave it entirely to its electronic wizardry, all it achieves is is you dazzling the oncoming driver, or you being flashed at by the oncoming driver. It's a mix of functionality and common sense.

So true westie38, in the great 'free for all' lighting regulation relaxation of recent years the 'auto dip' must rate as one of the most useless of innovations.......though indicator lights inside headlight / brake light clusters are also up there.

Yes you leave ‘main beam’ on permanently and the car sorts it all out.

This can also be coded with VCDS etc providing you have the ‘A5’ camera fitted.

Got to disagree with the view of auto dip - I have found it a boon, & as described in my earlier post, the one I have in the Karoq reacts so much quicker than the Octy version I had previously. I have never been flashed whilst driving the Karoq for my headlights being on main, which are so much brighter being LED's, whereas that did happen occasionally with the Octavia's. So, to the doubters on here, try 'em yourself - I wouldn't be without them.

V helpful post & just about answers my question - we really want auto light assist as have it on a BMW 330d & v useful where we live.  Am I right in understanding it is not standard on EDITION or any other models?  We have found Only one dealer saying their nearly new Karoq EDITION has it...but cannot see it in options anywhere.  Is this right?

@RossKH can i ask what is special about Sussex that makes 'auto light assist useful'?

On UK Karoq's High Beam Assist (HBA) is only standard on the Scout. For all other trims it is a £200 cost option...

Many thanks - will look out for ones with auto dimming rear view mirror as probably easier to search on that.

Doing the evening school run down twisty country lanes which are only just 2 cars width with regular potholes, having one less thing to have to focus on while coping with oncoming traffic is v.helpful.

The problem is that some of the latest “assistance systems” are either unreliable or simply do not come up to scratch compared with a competent driver, so we end up wasting time and energy fighting against them or trying to second guess them.

And when we can, some of us switch them off and get on with driving.

The worst example are High Beam Assist, Active Cruise, Lane Assist, Self Parking, Rear Cameras.

As for phone apps .. . . . . . .  . . . .

I wouldn't be without the Rear Camera as trying to reverse this big SUV is difficult enough. I'd love to try the Self Parking but I haven't the confidence yet to risk it. And Lane Assist has corrected my sleepy wanderings on a couple of occasions so a good addition. I didn't spec Active Cruise because I've never fancied Cruise Control or the idea of the vehicle driving itself. I'll try High Beam Assist if I'm ever driving at night (very rare).
