Over heating, in this weather?

Featured Replies

Over the last couple of days I have been out and about and completed some very short trips. On parking the car back on the drive the fan has kicked in and the car has smelt (sounds daft but you know what I mean) very hot to the point a friend who knows nothing about cars asked me what’s wrong with it. The oil and water temps are both fine and in one case they hadn’t even shown as warm after a 1 mile trip in 2c temperatures. It did it a couple of times in the summer but I wasn’t really fussed by that but as it’s doing it whilst it’s proper cold out I can’t help but think it odd.

Any thoughts?

Based on your profile, you have a TDi in which case it's probably a DPF regeneration you've interrupted. If so, it's normal and nothing to worry about.

That’s exactly the symptoms. Mind at ease, thank you.

As above; sounds like a DPF active regen.  Perfectly normal.

+1 Definitely a regen.

As you've only done very short trips in it lately, I doub't if the car was able to complete the regen process.

It would be a good idea if when you next use it, you can do an extended journey to allow the regen to complete.

It's a shame there isn't some way of kicking off the regen process, which you could initiate when you know your going on an extended journey.

I have the same problem as I do a lot of short journeys.

Ditto regen.  Have had it a few times, most recently on Tuesday picking some things up from th'office.  Once underway, a nice 17 mile drive cleared it.  Being DSG it's intelligent enough to hold onto gears to keep revs higher than normal to help itself.  Cleared and then short shifted then on...

I'm a short journey taker mainly (Mrs to work and car back home).  Longer journeys are needed every now and again - she definitely regens more than my Insignia ever did!

On the EA288 engine mgmt system "the ECM automatically initiates an active regeneration if there has been no regeneration – or no successful regeneration – in the last 465 miles, regardless of the load condition of the diesel particulate filter. “Mileage regeneration” is used as an additional safety system to keep the load condition of the diesel particulate filter low." Aha - thanks for that info, worth remembering.  As an aside, I've just had my first 1,500 mile Ad Blue warning since having the car...never had an Ad Blue car before, so that's something else to keep an eye on.  She's due a service, so probably worth asking them to refill...we'll see...
