No gear shift indicator or cruise control

Featured Replies

Hi, i have searched around but not found this problem so far. i have a 2011 octavia scout and the gear box was recently replaced, since this there is an intermittent gear display on th MFD and the cruise control only works if it it showing a gear. Does anyone know how the MFD reads what gear the car is in as it isnt directly from the gearbox so im guessing a lose connection somewhere? the fact the display works as soon as you change gear but then goes away makes me think it cannot be a broken or unconnected sensor? any help would be greatly appreciated

If it's a dsg the transmission control unit will keep track of the gear and broadcast it over the CAN bus, the MFD will then pick up that signal and process it.

If it's manual the cheapest way to track the gear position (and therefore the most likely) is to calculate the gear ratio based on the difference in RPM and vehicle speed then as the ecu knows the ratio of the box they can match it to a gear. Manual transmissions don't usually have a control unit though, so it's likely the MFD does this itself.

It sounds like it could actually be a faulty clutch switch.

You say it appears when you change gear and then disappears; what happens if you press and release the clutch again but stay in the same gear, does the gear display reappear?

If the clutch switch has failed open circuit the car would think the clutch is always pressed; I imagine during normal operation it blanks the display when the clutch is pressed.

it shows the gear you put it into whenever you change in any gear and then goes out again. it seems to take longer to go out in 1st and 2nd but thats maybe me. yes if you press the clutch and let it out in the same gear the same number comes back on again but 5th and 6th dont last more than a few seconds. as there wasa new gearbox fitted which is supposed to be the right ratio, can you read what the car thinks the ratio should be? im only guessing but if the ratio is wrong maybe its trying to calculate and failing somehow

It might be a live data item you can view with a diagnostics tool. I program diagnostics tools for a living and I've never seen it as a live item on a manual transmission.

i did some more driving this evening and it does seem to calculate the gear based on speed and revs because if you keep pressin the clutch while rolling downhill it does thingk you are in gear an dabout the right gear too but still the same problem

Your best bet is to take it back to the place that replaced your box.

It's either going to be:

a dodgy switch,

different ratios in the gears,

different ratios in the final drive or

clutch slip.

If you have a 2011 Octavia, it's a MK2 facelift, so probably better in the MK2 section rather than MK3 (2013+) :)

aaah well i did that hence all this confusion. i spent a long time making sure it had a matching serial and not just one that would fit. it came from Germany and the scout gearbox is more than the car from skoda sadly. the switch works every time you first change so i think you might be right about the different ratios or something along that line. the clutch was changed at the same time i dont think thats the issue as there is no rev slip if it does. im hoping i can reprogram with the new ratios if that is the issue as its annoying not having thec ruise control

Yeak im also slow on the reading front sorry

If you do work out its just the ratios or final drive, it should be something that can be reprogrammed.

thanks, skoda seem to be no help at all if im honest nobody will tell me anything its all just bring it in so we can look and they suggested it was a plug on the gearbox. anyway ill update if i can figure it out

That's not accurate? When driving a manual I'll oftenly accelerate hard from 2 to 5/6th and the car accurately identifies which gear I was in with my 1.4 TSI SE Sport?

Or is this relating to the eco-gear suggestions?

it correctly identifys the gear when you lift theclutch but then immediately the display goes blank and it cant tell.

Hi there I know it's an old post but I have something similar to your problem.

I have a Skoda a karoq all gear show up in MFD just fine BUT If I put the 5th gear it's shows it as a 6th.

Would be interested to hear if theres any solutions to this :). It's an old post, but who knows.. maybe OP's are still around.

Have a similar issue: It works for a while, but then after a while it doesn't know the gear it's in anymore. Was it a remapping of the ratio's?
