Just seen the OBDeleven app on the iOS AppStore, due to be released 17th June:

Ok but will it cost any money?

No idea, just says as the picture shows. You have to buy a “next generation” adapter. Would guess it’s the same as on Android.

Just found this: https://obdeleven.com/shop/en/home/61-starter-pack-0758277987806.html

I've seen the newest model advertised on the website. Guess they had to make a new one in order to comply with Apple requirements, in order to have specific bluetooth mac addresses or some unnecessary technical reason. Basically the newer model will support iOS and the BMW brand.

One thing OBDeleven keeps chucking up on my car is a so called fault on the alarm and security. I just clear it each time, but a virtually brand new vehicle shouldn't have these in/on it.

What exact code is it?

I can't remember now. Not going to the now until morning.

If I remember I'll grab it and post it.

@TheWanderer my MY19 has been doing that since day 1, theres an explanation somewhere but I cant remember what it was. Think its more of an alert than error.

I bought a genuine 18.9 VCDS cable second hand for £70, the software is a free download. It works perfectly on my MY15 but might not work on the latest models. VCDS is more involved coding wise and it depends on what you want to do. If you are going to add alot of adaptions then get VCDS if its just to clear a few codes get the ODBII

I am getting that exact same message my self. When the car auto locks when driving away, sometimes I'll hear a single clunk and others a double clunk.

Not sure if it's the door open alarm, but noticed that after unlocking the car and opening the drivers door, I had went back to the house quickly to get something and a minute or so later, the alarm started going off.

Annoying thing is, the car locks fine, and alarm functions fine, i.e. interior monitors, doors etc all arm/lock properly.

As there isn't anything obvious happening and the clunking noise isn't really an "issue" to report, I haven't bothered to mention it yet.

I will have to at some point though, as I don't want it coming up as an issue when handing it back next year.

This is on my 1.0 TSI.

So it seems that I'm not alone in having this error code then.

No. OBD 11 *requires* you have their - and only their - dongle. Which is why when they decide it's time to upgrade to version 2, you are stuck and *have* to upgrade.... it's not an open system. This is why I don't use it...

Looks like the one from VoltasIT is their dongle.

But it's probably the best and most cost-effective route into tweaking a cars electronic subsystems, especially with the very high cost of the VCDS setup and its rather user unfriendly interface.

I’d argue it’s also better to be a a closed system. That way you know the hardware is fully compatible with the software. Third party stuff might be a bit of a gamble.

What makes you say this?

The Version 1 dongle will continue to work, there is no need to upgrade to Version 2 if you don't want IOS or BMW support?

Im with you, Ive had my OBD11 for 3 years across two cars. Ive used in on both of mine, a mates golf, the mrs fabia, dads SEAT, father in laws audi. Ive unlocked factory options that would have cost hundreds on their own. I think I paid about £70 quid for it, if it went out of use tomorrow I wouldnt really have much to complain about.

You do not know that and there's no reason to believe that it would remain that way. You are at the mercy of the manufacturer.

Opinion: OBD11 is there to fill the space for those who want simplicity. VCDS was never intended to be a consumer article, nor is VCP. CarPort is a sort of middle ground, but it's also not a trivial software. You pay your money and make your choice. Considering both VCP and VCDS are really quite powerful and have an awful lot of opportunity to screw things up, I actually think its lack of accessibility and high cost is both a deliberate decision and a good one.

I'm not a fan of closed systems generally, and I really don't like them in situations like this.

Well they've publicly stated that, so unless we're going down the rabbit hole of these people being outright liars, then we do know that and there is plenty of reason to believe they're not going to arbitrarily drop support for version 1.

There is certainly more reason to believe it will keep working than there is to believe your completely baseless assertion everyone will be forced to upgrade to the V2 adapter when it's released.

None of the alternatives you mention are totally open systems either anyway and could just as arbitrarily decide to force an upgrade on users. The reality is though that none of them will, whether they cost £40 or £400.

Why is it baseless to assume a company wants to make money? I'm just a cynic. Is it reasonable to assume the technology won't be "upgraded"? No, it's not, because technology and OSes move forward. iOS 13, for example, will require a new version and probably has new UI requirements, just because they can and Apple say they have to.

No upgrades "forced"? You mean like the one not-so-long back which means VCDS now has to be connected to the internet or it won't work? Or the dropping of support for Windows XP?  At least the second one of those is no loss...

Same as Apple want to push you into a walled garden with your iPhone, OBD11 do the same with your dongle.

I'm not touching OBD11, I thought about it long and hard before deciding to get something which supports multiple adapters and / or cables and where I have a choice of software products to use with those adapters.
