Crack on lcd but not the touchscreen!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've noticed today that somehow there is a hairline crack on the display of my 2017 stock vrs head unit display.

I can't fathom for the life of me how it has ended up there. I'm the only person in the car 99% of the time.

The strange thing is the digitiser/touchscreen part (or that's what it's called on a mobile) is fine. The crack is a vertical line just right of centre of the display running from the top to about 2/3rds of the way down the screen.

I'm taking the car in for a gearbox leak that was picked up on the first service next Wednesday, so they will look at it then to see if it can be replaced under warranty, but I'm anticipating a fight on my hands, despite the fact the digitiser is unblemished and the crack doesn't have any lcd bleeding or circular strike marks on it. I.e I can't see how it's something I've inadvertently done myself.

Given I'm expecting this to be well north of £500 for the dealer to replace if/when they say the warranty won't cover it, how can I replace the lcd element of the display without forking out for the entire thing?

Please if ignore the discoloration on the picture, that's the phone freaking out and causing that I'm afraid. IMG_20190206_130107.thumb.jpg.53014b5809385d1945b93d9b344f3bc6.jpg

Thank you!!

The screen is a separate unit to the ‘radio’ and should be an easy DIY fix.

Brilliant!! Thanks for the site!

Am I correct in saying the stock infotainment unit is this one? - https://www.cars-equipment.com/en/shop/parts-8/oem-a2c01612501-01-radio-lcd-display/#prettyPhoto

Looks like I'll need to transfer some components over which hopefully won't be too much bother.

There are three different screens:

Physical knobs and buttons

Physical knobs and touch screen buttons

No physical knobs, everything is touch screen

I'd be a little reluctant to use cars-eqipment.com. I previoisly considered buying a screen from them, but when I looked into how legit/ good they were, the reviews online were pretty awful (trustpilot) and there's a thread on here about them:

I decided to play safe and not use them!

I suppose warranty must cover. This doesn't look as an issue you could have caused it.

That's how I'm hoping they see it!

Ahh really, that's a shame.

Any idea who I could use instead? It's the first time I've had to consider doing anything like this as I've normally had cars I haven't been so precious about lol

Looks more like a faulty address column in the lcd than a crack in that picture.

if so that to me would be a manufacturing fault, so a warranty job.

i would just see what the dealers say.

^^ This.

Looks like a line of "dead" pixels on the display. If the "crack" is a straight line then i'd wager it's the pixels on the display that are at fault, take it back to Skoda garage and see if they'll replace under warranty.

So on much closer inspection it looks like there is some sort of very small strike mark on the touchscreen part of the display near the area where the lcd crack is. So I highly doubt they will cover this under the warranty.

Time for a chat with my daughter I think :@

They have quoted around £870 for a new one, which has left me somewhat baffled since the link I posted above comes in at about £180, so am I missing a trick here? I know I'll need to do a bit of work to transfer some of the components across from the broken unit but even so.....

I guess the trick you’re missing is you’re comparing a dealer price for a genuine part with that of a ‘fell off the back of a lorry’ price.

Jesus are they that dodgy?

Ok I was maybe a bit dramatic. The review thread didn’t paint a very good picture though.

Haha OK. I'll have a proper read through the review thread and see what's what.

Hopefully if I pay via credit card or something I'll get some level of protection.

Maybe you can try this quick fix? Crack on your screen is so thin and barely visible, might work.

There is a user on the O3 forum who does some private radio repairs upgrades etc if I remember right….

He was helping someone in a post last week but I cant find it for the life of me…..

Might be a solution if its not covered by warrenty.

IIRC it's Rustynuts who does the fixes.  https://www.briskoda.net/forums/profile/53783-rustynuts/

I've got the same problem in mine, when I first got it (demo miles) it had one vertical crack partway across the screen which you could only see if the sun shone directly on it or if the background was very light (eg using google maps)

since then it has developed another crack in the same spot on the opposite side of the screen and I can absolutely guarantee it hasn't been hit with anything because I don't have kids and I'm the only one that's driven it (no not even the SO.) My theory is it's a poor design and when the dashboard flexes it moves the screen, causing these stress fractures between the mounting clips. we showed the dealer and they said to take it back to the original place of purchase, but i haven't because it really doesn't bother me at all

Thanks for all your comments guys.

So just picked the car back up from Skoda who had it for some warrenty work for an oil leak on the gearbox.

They looked at the infotainment screen, eacalated it to technical who said it has been caused by external forces AKA hit by something. Unfortunately I don't have much or a leg to stand on.

So... Looks like im going to have to source one from Europe via the website someone kindly posted in this thread. However, I was told by Skoda that the infotainment screen/head unit needs to be coded to the car or it won't work. Is there any truth to this?

Hills breakers have plenty of Octavia, so i would think you can get a suitable front display for a lot less than the dealer price.

Cars-equipment.com seem to do them new for around £240ish, or less if I can be arsed to move the components on the back of the unit over to the new display.

My only concern is this chap at the dealership telling me that they code the display to the car so I won't be able to do it without somehow pairing them up.

I'll have a look at Hills breakers though :)

I don’t believe the display is coded, but plenty of more knowledgeable people.

My understanding is it’s the unit in the glovebox and not the screen, but I am willing to be wrong, so do check first.

Screens are not coded, they are just screens. I’ve had 5 different screens in my car. Check eBay before you head to mainland Europe. The part number for the Amundsen screen is 5E0919605M and you should be paying about £200-250. The Columbus screen is 5E0919606D and you should be paying about £350-500. The dead pixel row a third of the way in from the right is very common and probably has nothing to do with the display being hit. That’s likely to be coincidence.

5? My daughter hasn't been in your car as well has she?

It's definetly a crack in the lcd unfortunately.

Thanks for the advice, I'll take a look into it.
