Paint defect - new Octavia

Featured Replies

As per the title, I collected a new Octavia hatch on 11 Feb. I didn't notice this at the handover, but on washing and waxing the car for the first time, I noticed a defect in the paint on the boot lid. The surface of the paint is perfectly smooth, but there is a noticeable patch of discolouration that appears to be under the surface. It is practically invisible from some angles, but really noticeable in the right light. Naturally it's not easy to photograph!

I don't think it is environmental damage as a) this part of the car was covered by protective film when it was delivered and b) I've never seen anything similar to this before. I called the dealership today, but surprise surprise the promised call back from the service dept. never materialised. They are only 10 minutes from my workplace, so I will more than likely pop in tomorrow if I have time.

I just wondered if anyone else has seen anything like this before and, if so, what Skoda's position was in terms of repairing the defect?

I have much larger defect on my roof (30x30 cm), that was not present for the first year or something similar, and I cant really do anything about it. Dealer once polished it and it was gone just to be returned recently. To my knowledge this is caused by some residual like an oil getting into the paint..

I had issues with a mark under the lacquer on the passenger door of my '66 plate .It wasn't there when I collected the car but appeared after a couple of months. Took it back to the dealer who organised one of their paintshop guys to put a couple of heat lamps on the door as there was moisture under the lacquer. I thought they were bull****ing me but when I collected the car later that afternoon, the door was perfect.

Thanks for the replies. It does look like some form of contamination under the paintwork. The car is less than 4 weeks old,  so from my perspective, it has been like that since new. I'm not overly bothered about it as it's only really visible in clear sunlight, but my concern is that it might get worse and I'll be hammered for it come trade in time.

I gave up on waiting for the dealership to call me back and called again this afternoon. They said they didn't have anyone qualified to deal with paint defects. I have been told I need to take it to one of two local Skoda-approved bodyshops and ask them to look at it. They will then report to the dealer who will in turn report to Skoda and get a decision as to whether it merits a repair under warranty. One of the recommended bodyshops has fairly dodgy reviews, so I guess I'll be calling the other one tomorrow.

I would expect the dealer to take your car to the Body Workshop for Inspection and give you a loan car whilst yours is Sorted.  Why should you do all the leg work. It's not your fault the dealer doesn't have any qualified staff regarding paint defects.

I'd be speaking to Skoda CC as well

That is all

You need to do as the Warranty T&C's.

Report as soon to an Approved Repairer, so that is a Main Dealership.

The Warranty Manager can then deal with things.

Take pictures or have that done, submit to Skoda UK.

Arrange the Inspection buy Qualified Paint Examiners, or Skoda's favoured Company.

They can come out see the car, arrange an appointment at the Dealership etc.

No expense to the Car Owner / Warranty Policy holder.

Fire in your pictures today,

A Skoda UK Communications Manager can remind the Dealership Employees what to do.

Elite in Northampton are the best option. I would definately recommend. They defo have a couple of courtesy cars (Fabias). Just a mile or 2 from the dealer.

I've filled out the contact form on Elite's website, so we'll see if they get back to me on Monday.

I've found that they are really good if you just pop by to assess basic issues like that. They take photos and send them off. If deemed a valid claim they'll book it in when they have a car available.
