Sorry, about a mk4 Golf...

The car was awarded an MOT pass today after an initial failure for a rear shock, (fixed for a fair price on the premises, happily for me).

The alt belt and one of the rear tyres (tread low) were the only advisories.

The ABS code came back in the week since I changed the sensor, but luckily didn't trigger the cluster warning lights before the test. Probably need to find the dodgy bit of cable or a dirty connection to fix that for longer.

Funny story: my supposedly genuine temperature sensor turned up in a ziploc bag with an ECP part number on it, and no suitable markings on the device itself, so that got refunded.

Means I've currently got two Haas pattern parts to temperature test to investigate my theory about them having the NTC thermistors miswired. Thanks to the data from @nige8021 above I should be able to check that fairly robustly with a sample of two. :)

Cheers for all the help folks.

If it's any consolation...I did order and receive an OE temp sensor and replaced the old one.  Alas it did not solve the problem of my temp gauge not going up whilst driving and only getting half way at idle/stationary.  I tried this as it was cheaper than a thermostat swap (which I didn't feel I could do anyway).  Local indy specialist investigated and swapped the thermostat...the problem persisted.  Turns out my genuine part temp sensor was faulty! Sods bloody law!

P.S - Well done on getting it through the MoT.  Nice work

I now refer to our Mk4 Golf as my indy specialists university fund for his 4 year old daughter :D

Though we've pretty much sorted all the common problems with it (drain holes clogging and leaking, sun roof tubes disconnecting and leaking, temp gauge erratic, rear door cards leaking).  It's just sailed through it's MoT though and may even hit 70K miles by the end of the year.  Mechanically it's spot on though;  I shouldn't like this car but I do.

Remap, cruise control, convenient indicators, ARB's and bushes upgrade next on the list.

I thought the stat would do it on this car, but wanted to cover all bases.  New stat did return the dash gauge to normal reading, and when I scanned the car later I confirmed that the ECU temp was also reading sensibly (89° fully warmed up), so it was actually OK on the original temp sensor.

Thermostat swap was a bit scary, the lugs that hold the stat in position on the housing were busted, so it was a sot of blind fumble to try to get stat and o-ring in the right spot first time. If I ever do another on the same engine type I'll be buying a new housing. Luckily, it did go in OK first time. :whew:

Indeed. Feels good.

I reckon her fuel economy may also improve dramatically with the new stat and a new air filter that I fitted on Sunday. Old filter can't have been flowing well at all.
