VRS MPG - Miles per Gallon

Buy a TDI to save a few quid on fuel each week but spend loads improving it's power? Surely the cost of getting it to 320 bhp wipes out a significant amount of fuel savings?

A remapped stage 1 TSI would be knocking on 300 bhp and can easily see 45mpg on a run, with the fuel being significantly cheaper per litre too.

I didn't buy the tdi to save money. I bought tdi because at the time there wasn't a petrol in the right spec or colour for the price I wanted to pay so I had to buy the tdi. My previous car was knock off ng on hells door so I had to make a decision. Remapped it after 1 month of having it. Then gave it 15/16 months then altered a lot of it. In time I will buy the petrol. Also the stage one remap will never achieve that 45 figure lol. Maybe 35 ish.

That's fair enough, with my mileage I'd have been happy to take the right petrol or diesel but the right petrol came up and was significantly cheaper than similar used diesels.

@shyVRS245 will tell you the figures he gets with his beyond stage 1 VRS. A standard TSI can hit those figures no problem and there's no reason a mapped one couldn't either unless the power is fully utilised all the time.

Uk NSL 60 mph, then 70mph on some roads, so even if doing 70 plus and carrying some weight around there is no need for a Taxi / Airport / Private Hire car sized petrol car not to get 45 mpg, standard or mapped.

My vRS TDI has averaged pretty much bang on 50mpg over 45k miles. All of my commutes have been a ~25 mile motorway slog with rush hour traffic for a few miles either side. What I love with the TDI is you can drive as quick as traffic allows on the motorway and it'll still average high 40's/low 50's MPG. If I hold it around 70mph on a motorway (without cruise control) it'll comfortably do 60-65MPG but its pretty tedious.

Just to put the record straight last September 2018 at stage 1 remap on my 245 took a few days break on the Isle of Wight. Round trip was 360 miles used 36.38 litres Shell V-Power (8.00gallons exactly) which is 45mpg average with 302bhp and 467NM of torque.

Wow that's some good going. What was your average speed?

Where did you get the bonnet liner from? And how much was it?

I got it from a Czech company for just over £35 delivered, which is cheaper than buying it from the UK and that's if you can find a company willing to sell one to you.

Most SUK dealers won't sell you them.

Just checked the photo of the return journey from maxidot, 179 miles 3hr44min average speed 48mph and indicated 47.9mpg (not actual mpg).

I'm guessing you did majority of the journey at well above 70pmh?

Back to the original question ref petrol engines from owners of TSI rather than TDI. Here's some proof. Stage 1 290+ Bhp 481 Nm. All keeping up with and at times ahead of traffic with indicated avg mpg and speed. From 52 Mpg poodling around Conway to Rhuabon on busy A roads ranging to 45 Mpg A1 Lincoln to Edinburgh. I enjoyed the last photo's 122 mile journey at an avg speed of 70 with slightly worse mpg.

No kept to all the speed limits for the entire trip. Isle of Wight 20/30mph, then 60/70mph A roads and motorway. Final 5 miles at 50/30mph limits. Checked home to Portsmouth photo 170 miles 3hr16min at an average speed of 52mph indicated 45.0mpg.:D

Ahhhh. That's why then lol. Now try it again and disregard the speed limits. Drive it like it should be driven lol.

No not at all. Speeds were made to be broken. Just tell the blues and twos it's fine and your setting a self record

Just for reference purposes have seen these indicated speeds on the central maxidot at standard (160mph), stage 1 (165mph) and stage 2 (177mph). Despite this I have averaged over 40mpg over 20,500 miles and have owned a 64 plate (181bhp) Vrs Tdi DSG previously. Guess which one I prefer driving and it's not the noisy, smelly diesel.:D

@SkoctyvRSTDI220

That was the good old days of paper licences and the 'tear along dotted line'.

Now Average Speed Cameras, Fixed Cameras etc take the police out of the equation.

Then the Insurers gets away with loading each Insurance Policy for 1 conviction you have even though you drive / ride only 1 vehicle.

So not natural justice.

I can imagine. I can't wait to get my tsi.

I get 22mpg in my 220 to work, but that's with a lot of traffic lights and traffic.

Went Perth to Aberdeen the other month, 70 the whole way due to average speed cameras, and it was just shy of 45.

You can't trademark shy shy, otherwise you might get known as a shyster.

@Saints92

Perth to Aberdeen is nothing like 70 mph Average Speed Cameras all the way.

Maybe Friarton Bridge to Dundee, but not through Dundee, 60, 50 and 40 mph,

then 70 mph Powrie Brae Dundee to before Bridge of Dee Aberdeen, other than the 50 mph average speed cameras are Laurencekirk.

(Got my points and fines, Scone to Forfar going that way as i do.)

Correct, I couldn't be arsed going into further details, but the majority of my drive was 70.

I like to check MPG & performance both ways Friarton Bridge to near the Forth Crossing. 70 mph'ish...

and no Speed Cameras and mostly just Unmarked Cars doing Driver Training....

Coming over the Friarton Bridge towards Dundee is where I got my only fine :crying:

Came around the corner after the bridge and sank it, only to find a van sitting further down the road, no idea what I was thinking as I know they sit there :@

It was there that Gareth Wood was caught in his RR while there was road works.

Cloak of invisibility must have been malfunctioning...

I saw the quickest police 'trying out demonstrator cars' run there last year,

a nice new Volvo hybrid and a rally inspired Hyundai so i just tagged on at a distance to film them.
