Changing Sat Nav to Metres

Featured Replies

Hi,

How do I change the sat nav units from yards to metres? It's not in set up or advanced set up that I can see. It's the intotainment system if that helps.

Thanks

Matt

Car -> Settings -> Units -> Distance

Only options are Miles or KM though, not sure if KM breaks down to metres instead of 0.3km etc.

Hi,

I did this but when the sat nav talks' it's still in yards'!

  • 3 weeks later...

That’s annoying, but it’s not the end of the world...only a difference of 8 or 9cm per metre or something!

the UK voice will still be in yards because the measurements are still yards on the signs etc. I've found with here that the US voice and maps are dealt with in feet and miles, and the European stuff is generally kms and metres. I'm not convinced that what you're looking for is possible; you're asking to combine metres and miles which are generally considered to be mutually exclusive.

I had the opportunity to check whether the sat nav shows yards but means metres a couple of days ago - on the A361 near me the highest section is 297 yards according to my Amundsen (i.e. 891 feet) but according to the Alpine sat nav in my other car the height there is 975 feet.

Converting 297 metres to feet gives ............. 974.4 feet so it certainly does appear that when the sat nav in the Octavia says "yards" it really does mean "metres" :wall:

Petrol Dave, you have too much time on your hands but thanks for clarification! This is of couse begs the question for a software patch but then how would the software in your car update I guess? This is a pretty bad flaw. I mean who uses yards these days? It's been nearly 50 years since we changed over!

Official software updates for the sat navs can be found (there are threads in this forum) but the real question is do Skoda care? No of course they dont, so there won't be a patch anytime soon (equals never).

I think you'll be surprised how many people still use feet and yards, and all our longer distance signs on roads are in miles so even those taught in SI units still have to understand miles.

Seriously? I would have thought that would be a quick win. Why wouldn't Skoda care? I have no experience of ever needing Skoda customer care (touchwood) so can't judge. I've never had any problems with my Octavia and this is my biggest niggle about the car so far but then I can't say I've learn't all the functionality of it in 3 years lol!

Look at it from the point of view of the effect on Skoda's bottom line...

How many markets that Skoda sell to use Imperial measurements? One - the UK.

What percentage of global Skoda sales are in the UK, and how much of those have been lost because of this feature/bug? Probably 0% or very close to it.

So what is the financial incentive for Skoda to correct/change this feature/bug? There is no business case to spend engineering time on this B)

As an Accountant I don't necessarily concur. It's quite an irritating thing for a sat nav not to have that option and possbily dents customer loyalty a little which does translate into slightly reduced sales. A software fix wouldn't cost that much to implement if only for new Skodas?

I know and agree with you to a point.

But in answer to who uses yards well the UK road system still does.. distance markers to junctions/exits of motorways/dual carriage ways 300, 200 then 100 yards to all intents and purposes functionally equivalent to metres just a little difference in the real world.

I'd like to be able to have miles per litre for fuel economy presented to me since we buy litres of fuel but that whole mix of imperial/metric is just messed up lol

I don't know why we didn't bite the bullet all those years ago and change 100% of everything from imperial to metric, it's been 50 years FFS and the people who preferred the old system, with all due respect, are a diminishing breed now!

We should have changed everything agreed. I remember having a full scale argument with a cocky know it all Aussie in London in the pub a few years ago once telling me I was taught the imperial system in school. I certainly wasn't my only reference to imperial is the road system and speed limits. The only person I know who still measures stuff in ft/inches is my dad and he's 80.. a very active agile able 80 year old too :)

But since the number of reduced sales is tiny, the effect is tiny and definitely not worth diverting engineering effort from more important things like avoiding possible huge fines for not meeting the new corporate CO2 requirements.

In my 40 years as an engineer this is the sort of decision that I've had to argue with many times.... and lost on every occasion because I always wanted things to be "right", so I ended up implementing the changes anyway but hidden along with other changes that "the powers that be" did approve

As I'm only 20 years into my engineering career I definitely can NOT say on a public forum that I am proud to have done exactly the same thing. :-(
