Thanks for that - love a bit of someone on their high horse.

Just stating the facts, and I wasn't being rude.

  • This is turning into one of those decent home-cooked food vs McDonalds conversations.   Both are OK - but I know which I prefer in the long term and there's no point discussing the finer poi

  • For my part, I would say I'm not angry, but I am disappointed with the Canton system. I spotted this post and thought it a good opportunity to let people know what they actually get, rather than what

I have the Canton system in my My19 Superb III and just faded the speakers 100% rear,

They sound almost 100% mid-range and weak (lack of highs and lows). Is that typical?

I went and sat in the back FWIW.

Well sometimes the tone of things can come across wrong. Apologies if you weren’t trying to be condescending, just how it came across.

My MY17 does exactly the same @digifish. It does take a bit of fettling to get it how you  want it to be.

There are no mid range speakers in rear doors. And yes I agree the high and low also sound really bad haha. But I think that the issue is not speakers but position and amplifier settings

The rears were so poor I leaned down and put my ear next to them (and so position was not the issue). They sound like they are made of cardboard. I can't believe how bad they sound compared to the front speakers.

But physically they're same speakers - same hardware (I made sure when I took off rear panels) :D Interesting truly.

Rear door high`s are muted compared with fronts. Bass elements are acting as mid`s, bass is designed to come from subwoofer. Anyway, if you set up perfect sound in front, then it is bass overflow in back seat. I like BMW approach, where bass drivers are under front seats, more in center of the car.

OK, but I can't see the purpose of restricting the frequency response of the rear speakers. It means if you pan the sound too far back it ends up weak boxy. It also sounds worse for back passengers.

This is true, I don't like the  weak boxy sound either. For me, it seems that they restricting the low frequncy  to minimize the bass overflow in the back (that is allready present).

I would have preferred 3 way full response speakers in all 4 doors + subwoofer with frequency and volume controller. But it ain't Lexus or Audi :)

Having the bass drivers under the front seats doesn’t work that well in my opinion as it’s isn't the ideal acoustic setup, and the drivers are too small - an enclosure in the boot will generally work better.

I have the Harman Kardon setup in my 5, and while the overall quality and sound stage is excellent for a car, it does lack on some music types in the real low frequencies.

I would prefer overall excellent quality.

Main Canton sound disadvantage is  that sound in front seat is better from the sound in backseat. The woofer is to small to fill real low frequencies.

I have been searching for compromise but in front sound is bright, in back sound is bit muddier with powerfull bass. Can't tweak it to be perfect all around the car.

This is exactly my experience too. It turns the front/rear panning into a tone control, rather than a surround balance control, which defeats the whole purpose.

While I like the overall sound, I can't say this system is anything special compared to the stock system in my old 2003 Passat. Sounded just as good, but less bass. Which in the Skoda is bloated and flabby anyhow. Fake one-note-bass from port tuning.

Has anyone upgraded any of the speakers, and/or the sub in the boot?

Yes, that is the way it is designed.

Hey K,

I'm heading up North, mate I know for a very long time, Phil Neil in Audio Advice, Portadown.

Not cheap :o

Will have it back in a couple of weeks, yep, it's a full build.

No problem meeting up at that stage, though not sure if it will need to be run in or not.

Is strange to say, but some stereo stuff does need running in.

How did the upgrade go?

Is still a work in progress:

I’m in the process of getting my Canton upgraded in my 69 plate 272 estate.

Truth is, the Canton spec front speakers are cheap Chinese paper cones. As far as I can tell, I don’t think they’re any different from regular spec. The amp is a cheap standard VW jobbie.

My impression is that “Canton” spec simply adds a crappy one-note subwoofer and a dubious EQ curve - they might well have just named it “polish the turd”.

Pics of Canton speakers and amp attached,

Ben.

6” Canton door woofer is standard spec:

So, yes, Canton speakers are indeed just regular VW/Skoda speakers.

Amp is standard Gen 2 MIB amp.

So your “Canton” money really just buys you a bloaty sounding dual 8ohm cheap pressed paper coned subwoofer, which just further masks the poor sound quality of the other components:

I’ve gone for Audisson Voce replacement 3 way components plus an F8.9BIT amp, Zen V-150 DAC and a JL Audio W3 8” sub. Being fitted by Audiofile in car, Bishops Stortford, early May.

Ben.

Couldn't agree more Ben.

It's shocking to sell the Canton system as an upgrade, and I certainly wouldn't consider the 'sub' as a sub at all

Sure, for the additional price, compoments are cheap, but overall quality is not bad and certainly worth over standard sound. Subwoffer is certainly powerful enough for most people.
