185 bhp and 320 lb/ft of torque by celtic tuning *cough*

145 bhp standard

But i'm glad they like it :)

Brought quite a smile to my face reading that. :D

I think I upset the driver of one of those last week. He seemed keen to overtake but every time the traffic cleared he shrivelled up in the rear view mirror
In that case, he probably wasn't trying. Autocar ran one for a year and loved it. 30-50mph in third was 3.6s and 30-70[/b'] through the gears is 7.6s!

All I can say is that the Fabia vRS[/b'] is a fantastic car. Quick and economical and a damn site more entertaining than most Saabs.
Can't fault it. Build quality top notch and lots of nice little touches that make Saabs look like overpriced, underspec'd Vauxhalls.

This Fabia is nothing short of a pocket rocket. More of a GT than ultimate GTi' date=' but that's not to under-estimate it's balance and handling.

Top car and better value than the other equivalent VAG cars.

Shame it's hard to find a second hand one.[/size']

Marvelous.

My mate has just got a brand new Saab 9-3 estate thingy with a 150BHP turbo diesel engine as a company car and all the way to Wales last weekend he slagged off Skoda and came out with all the old classics - 'why do they have heated rear windows'? etc etc....

I have to say for a 25 grand car it wasn't that special. Ok so it had a sort of classy look and feel, but I have a better stereo in my bathroon than it had and it wasn't exactly quick or particularly refined - or put together particularly well!

Oh how little the general public know about Skodas now!

Quite interesting to read that. I do like saabs just wish they would update their front ends look so dated if you get me?!

I completely agree!!!!!

I also like their advertising about having great drag co-efficiency because of their experience with aeroplanes when infact an Octavia vRS mk1 has a better drag co-efficiency.

Having said that, us Fabia drivers can't exactly comment

Interesting thread that. Nice to hear the love being shared!

I always wanted a Saab.

Then I looked at how much they were and realised that although they are nice motors,

One of the best drag co-efficient comparisons is (and for those of an age like me :) )

the Austin A40 had a marginally lower drag factor than a E-Type Jag!

I suspect that the A40's older brothers (A30 & A35) didn't

I learned to drive in an A30  God, I'm old

Never even heard of an Austin A40  God i'm young

It's always nice to see members on car forums passing sensible adult comment on other maker's vehicles instead of the usual "it's not one of ours so it must be crap" nonsense

185 bhp and 320 lb/ft of torque by celtic tuning *cough*

Just out of interest what do you think it is ?

COMPLETELY IMO

175/180 bhp and 300 lb/ft is more realistic imo. the standard clutch wont take 320 lb/ft for long, so either they are jepodising the internals by pushing such high powers or they have an optimistic rr.

This is an A30 8523.attach

Or to be exact, an A40 Farina as there was an earlier A40 Somerset :)

:D :D

Oh dear....

Have to say I'm not too impressed with modern Saabs.

I had a 'classic' 900 turbo, which was a very reliable, comfortable, classy flying machine. But I sold it when our daughter was born about 18 months ago:mecry:

Then I had a 'new' 900 turbo, which was a pig, in pigs clothing.

The 9-5 I have now is very comfortable, and safe, but not a good car to drive anwhere other than a motorway / roundabout free A road. Build quality's not too hot either, problems with engines sludging up and munching turbos etc. The little things I notice are things like corsa wing mirror controls etc. Mmmmmm vauxhally:thumbdwn:

Fuel economy is pants too, 31 MPG with the cc set at 75 mph on a loooong motorway trip.:(

Still, at least it's not a BMW and we get let out of the occasional side road.

Hopefully the fab will return me to the fun I had in the old 900, while my wife keeps the saab, until I can talk her into moving it on.

Mines still going strong with 317lb/ft off jbs' old rollers - and they were always viewed as pretty accurate.

My Dad had two 9-5 2.3t's (an SE and then an Arc), used to love driving them. It was an Auto so when you poped it into sport mode and floored it the torque steer was crazy, a remaped VRS reminds me of the car alot in terms of straight line acceleration (but minus the toqure steer) . Never got to drive an Areo with the big T, dread to think what that went like in a straight line, must be on the limits for a big FWD car. The only negative coment I can have about the Saabs I've driven was I never felt happy throwing them round corners, both of the 9-5's and the 900. Managed 35mpg out of it on the motorway though, that was running on Optimax.

I had an Austin A40 ......rod brakes on the back  surprised I am still here

:D I used to love driving my dad's Vector 2.3t (until I got my vRS- the Saab doesnt feel that fast anymore!) I still like it though, still go for the odd drive round the block when he's not looking. Its not too bad round corners because he specced it with the sports chassis and it already has the 17s/smaller tyres fitted.

Have you seen the face of the new 9-5s? Seen one in the flesh and I like it! -

Dont you have a Turbo back exhaust aswell though mate, if so this probably accounts for the extra torque?

If not then apologies prehaps I was mistaken. My clutch was slipping at 323 lb/ft and Jabba knocked it back to 301 lb/ft to preserve the clutch.

Chris.

So did the A30 - "hydro-mechanical brakes". Complete PITA to adjust

At least in the A40 you had some power. The A30 had 803cc and all of 28 bhp on a good day :o When your mates dad, who owned the car and was a tightwad, ran it on 50% 2* petrol and 50% paraffin that 28 bhp was but a distant dream
