Using oil

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My Octavia 2.0 glx is using oil at the rate of about 3/4 Ltr every 1000 miles. It has covered 49000 miles and is dealer serviced with castrol magnatec 15w/40 because its an older Vw engine !! So the dealer said

I realize that the oil usage is within what the book says is ok but this

is my 4Th Skoda and the only one i have had to keep putting in oil between services. The warranty runs out if feb 2004

Have I got a problem !!!

Welcome to Briskoda, Roger. :D

I wouldn't worry about that rate of oil usage unless there are visible signs - such as blue smoke from the exhaust - which could indicate a problem with piston rings or valve seals etc. The 2001 issue of the Octavia Owner's Manual states that oil consumption can be as much as 1 litre/1000km - without differentiating between petrol or diesel engines, or non-turbo or turbo versions - and yours is quite a bit less than that. I suggest that you let the dealer know in writing before the warranty runs out that you are concerned about the oil consumption and that, if the engine subsequently develops problems associated with that level of oil usage, you will expect the problem/fault to be put right free of charge.

I have the 2.0 Ambiente (2001 MY) and I find it does use some oil, but not anything like that much - I have put in 1 Litre in just over 8K miles/9 months.

The oil the dealer used - was it definately 15w/40? If so then that may be a problem as the correct oil (complete with the VW approval) should have been Castrol GTX Magnatec 10w/40 (There are several different GTX Magnatec Oils from 5-15w/x).

How often do you top up the oil? Do you top it up when it reaches the Min mark or keep it topped up to the max level? The reason I ask is that I have found that it seems to drop quite fast to 1/2 way between max and min then seems to use much less oil - I did 4-5K before I needed to top it up with 1/2 a litre.

The 2001 issue of the Octavia Owner's Manual states that oil consumption can be as much as 1 litre/1000km

1 Litre for every 625 Miles

Apart from the first 2k miles, when my rs went through a litre I have never had to topup. and this includes track miles.

Thanks for your replys you have put my mind at rest.

My car has a petrol 2.0 engine and there are no signs of blue smoke when I start it. ( I have also followed it in my wifes Felicia to watch at the gear changes etc.)

The drive is also clear, where is my oil going....Hopefully not into the cat.

I do keep topping it up when it gets to half way on the dipstick, I will be brave and see if the second half lasts longer!!! I find it a mental thing

and knowing that fluids/oils are full gives me peace of mind.

Thanks once again

Roger.

Don't worry. 2.0 liter engine burs some oil. That is a fact. Usually 1 litre per 15000 km. My octavia also burn oil so I'm checking oil stick regulary. Approximately every 3000km.

Skoda dealers in Slovenia recommend Castrol TXT Softec 5W-40 or

other oil which meets VW 502.00 specification.

I have a 2.0 which uses quite a bit of oil, particularly when I do a lot of motorway miles. I was told that the engine has spray nozzles under the pistons cooling the crowns from the underside and this tends to evaporate a bit off. The vapours will pass through the breather and be harmlessly burned off.

My only concern is that the oil residues will gradually concentrate, thickening the oil. My car is on variable service intervals but I decided to change the oil early myself. It was thick and quite black. The new 0W-30 oil was like water in comparison.

Mine never used any oil either. Apart from servicing, the only 2 times I've ever had to put oil in were when I ripped the sump off and then again when the sump seal started to weep.

True!

Oil consumption problem is well known for VW 2.0 engine, not for others.

Well it is not really a problem it is more a "technical specification"
