I've combined both your posts @Yeti5L14TSI as they both refer to the same topic.

I still want to know what a clock spring is

In vehicle steering systems a clock spring or clockspring is a spiral-wound special rotary electrical connector which allows a vehicle'ssteering wheel to turn while still making an electrical connection between the steering wheel airbag and/or the vehicle's horn and other devices and the vehicle's electrical systems.

The revolving contact ring behind the steering wheel. Allows for electrical contact and steering wheel/airbag functions. May also contain a steering angle sensor. aka Squib, contact ring.

Thanks both - I'm astonished that in all my years of car ownership and maintenance I've never come across this term.

They don’t give to much issue to be honest. Maybe the odd clicking. Days of old they would have purely been for a horn button connection (although that also used to be just a brass nipple on a spring that sat against a contact ring, hence the name). But as tech has evolved and more and more steering wheel features have come about it’s now a £200 component and a little more prone to failure.

It seems that the clock spring fitted to VW vehicles in the US (which are likely to be the same components as fitted to the Yeti) have been the subject of a safety recall.  It's disappointing that it seems that the recall doesn't seem to extend to European countries.

Old news, the recall was in 2016, took 5 years of pressure for them to do so though.

Parts since 2012 allegedly modified to avoid potential problem:

If you are concerned then wear a hairnet!

See gentleman on eBay who repairs squibs /clock springs located in Oldham or Birmingham. Only takes about an hour.

Only just had it done so hoping to repost if still going in 6months time.

I take it you mean this one, did you take car to him or did you remove the part?

Yes this is the one. I took the car to him. He removed it and reinstalled it in front of me. Amazing how quick. Just send him a message to ask when he’s available. It was the Oldham one but as you located further South I can’t comment on the Birmingham one.
