Bolero to MIB STD2 pq + nav

Featured Replies

Hello guys. Need some advise about the media unit. I have 64 plate skoda yeti with bolero unit. I bought the android unit but i’m not really happy with it and thinking about the different skoda unit found on ebay.

as it is the same year will it be plug and play or not? It will need coding for sure but will it anything else?

Any advise is welcome

thanks

It'll need Component Protection removing, it'll also need Bluetooth and Sat Nav reactivating, and it doesn't have App Connect on it either. You'll need a later version for App Connect. Budget another few hundred or so for getting that to work in your car.

Thanks. I understand the component protection but bluetooth and satnav activation? Is that needed for sure?

cheers

Yes, because the license is for the VIN of the donor car and the functions won't work in a new car until relicensed.

bloody hell. They’re making it complicated. Is rhere anything You could suggest in this case. Maybe any particular unit that would work with less hassle about?  Many thanks for your help mate

One possible solution might be an RCD330 + with App Connect, and use your phone for Google maps or suchlike. You'll lose things like RDS (tells you what tracks are playing on the radio etc.), you won't get DAB radio, your sat nav will need the phone connecting by wire into the USB port but won't show directions on the screen in the dash centre. It's not a bad solution I guess. My Bolero has Smart Link (65 plate so newer unit than yours) and I use that for sat nav, but I'd prefer a built in one if I could justify the cost, simply because I don't like trailing wires and having to plug stuff in everytime I get in the car.

Although you could just check and see if you have Smart Link in the menu under Setup.

I used a RCD330+ for a few months and it's not bad for the price but does have a few issues. The lack of RDS/AF is annoying if you use FM and there were a few BT bugs too. I'd also suggest you choose the unit carefully as there are a few different versions which very similar. Mine was a 'noname' running SW:5606 if I remember correctly. I almost exclusively used it for Android Auto so your experience might be different depending what you actually want :)

I swapped it for a MIB STD2 PQ Amundsen and I'm much happier with it although it was the later E revision with Smartlink (Android Auto + CarPlay) rather than the A version you're looking at. As Rusty mentioned, it'll need CP removing and all the features activating, annoyingly it can't be done by a dealer as your VIN is too old.

There is also a chance your CAN-gateway or cluster might need the software updating but neither should be hard in a Yeti. When I added a rear view camera, I also had to replace the parking module to get full functionally so you might find the same. The old parking module was fine without the RVC.

what is your car and year and what was the total cost of the upgrade without the unit if You don’t mind me asking. I mean the mib std2.  Who did the whole programing and sat nav/ bluetooth activation. Thanks

There's a very loong thread on here where someone is doing a whole pile of mods to an Octavia vRS.  Some of the upgrades have been to the stereo, instrument binnacle etc. I think the person who did the work was someone who is a member on these forums, pab567 might be better able to advise on what is the best way for you to achieve what you want.

Mine is a '61 plate Octavia so unlike the Yeti, it was never offered with the MIB STD2 PQ headunits.

As for costs, roughly speaking:

- the headunit was (E rev) ~£300

- CP removal/activations were ~$200

- return postage to Russia and back, maybe £50?

When I looked in to it, there were two main methods, a software mod and a hardware mod.

- The hardware mod resets the 8 hour lockout timer by restoring parts of the EEPROM each boot. This works well enough in cars without CP clusters (like yours) but need an additional CAN-filter in cars with CP clusters.

- The software mod works regardless of CP support in the cluster.

I'm not sure what @pab567 offers these days but at least when I spoke to him, it was mainly the hardware mod. Instead, I used someone else who did a software mod for me. Still, I don't recall hearing anything bad about Pab and there seem to be many happy reports with his work on the MIB2 units so I'd probably suggest you start by dropping him a PM.

I'm sure Pab will correct me if needed :)

Not needed :)
