Hi All, My 62 plate Skoda Super Estate is up to 94k miles. And as I use it as a taxi, I am considering changing the Cambelt in advance of the recommended mileage. Do anyone, particularly the experts, have any recommendations as to what else should be changed at the same time. Many thanks.

Should have been done on age anyway shouldn't it?

Probably right, although I have only had it for 18 months. Nothing in the service book about a cambelt change.

I read it is recommended to replace the water pump at the same time.

I didn't but mine was replaced at 40k miles due to age not mileage

Probably worth doing the aux belt.

 

If I remember correctly, it has to come off to do the cambelt so there should be no labour charge making it pretty cheap.

I’ve just bought a kit from TPS, I am changing the water pump, aux belt and aux tensioner. I am also changing the cam belt tensioner stud along with bolts for ; water pump, cam and hp fuel pump pulley, damper pulley aux tensioner and all torque angle bolts for the engine mount and carrier.

I am also replacing the alternator one way clutch. I am changing some things that are not needed, but I want to minimise failures when driving to the Alps. 

I have seen plenty of engines ruined shortly after having new cam belt fitted by the little stud through the cam belt tensioner failing either due to incorrect torque or not counter holding during torque of nut.

Not worth the risk in my limited view.

All parts from TPS which guarantees they fit first time and are the latest revision parts.

Just need a dry day off to do it.

My 2014 Estate 2.0 diesel is due the cambelt change by end of July.  Dealer is quoting the standard Skoda online price of £529 for belt and pump.  I asked about the Aux belt and was told they wouldn't normally change it, seems false economy to me so I insisted it was added in....they have quoted £24 to add in the Aux belt.

I know I could get the job done cheaper elsewhere, but how much cheaper I am not sure, and my local dealer has already come good with me a couple of times on other issues so I am temped to bite the bullet and go with them.   This past year has been pretty expensive with maintenance/repairs, hopefully get a decent run from now on...!

My aux belt is being done tomorrow along with the timing belt package (i.e. cambelt + WP + tensioners + coolant = €450) and the the annual service (€135) .

 

My Irish dealer also said they don't normally change the aux belt but were happy to do so for a price similar to what you said . I also asked them to do any tensioner for the aux belt as well.

Thats a decent price.  Hadn't thought about a tensioner for the aux belt, not sure there is one but I will also do the same now that you mention it.

Sounds like you have a decent dealer, strange how they don't routinely offer the Aux belt.   I bet they also don't service Haldex systems properly, i.e only change the oil and not the filter....but thats another story! 😄

My mechanic said that more expensive one have extra ring or something, that restrict water flow when engine is cold - "electric" version??

My engine does not have that dual stage pump fitted to later cars. Yes that type stick in the closed position causing engine overheating. They have identified the problem and have been revised. Incidentally if one of the dual stage pumps does cause overheating, turn the heater to full hot and keep the revs below 2000 rpm, they don’t overheat then. You may need to open all the windows, but at least you can get somewhere safe.

The dual stage type has a shield over the impeller and a loom to power the solenoid. The idea is to get the engine up to temperature quickly which reduces emissions 😳 and reduces warm up engine wear.

Is it worth to pay more - or won't make a difference in UK-Manchester weather? 

The later type have a very complex cooling system compared to mine so you won’t have a choice, you will get the pump for your car to VIN.

The later type won’t fit my engine.

Its one of the few prices that surprised me - I'm not used to getting anything like that cheaper than the UK (£400, even with sterling down to  €1.125 today).

To be honest - I didn't know for sure that there is one either!  What I had written on the work order was to do the aux belt and if it has a tensioner, do that too.

 

After looking at the ETKA, there is one for for the diesel 1.6 and 2.0 engines (in my 1.6d case its a 03C145299Q). Seem to average €30 to €40 on eBay). 

 

I once paid for a squealing aux belt on a BMW to be replaced, only to find the squeal was still there afterwards. They hadn't done the tensioner...it was actually the root cause. So, like we said above - I'm gettin it done while the labour is already being paid to expose it...

 

Will be interesting to see the bill at 5pm (Oil service, timing belt, water pump, coolant, tensioner , Aux belt and tensioner, wheels rotated, 2 new disks and pads.)  Better than giving it back to Skoda, along with 20-25,000 for an S3 or Kodiaq, I'm sure....  😜

I would most certainly do the water pump (might even be included in the dealer price) and also the aux belt for the alternator and AC. Less then a year after my dealer did the cambelt on mine, the aux belt snapped leaving me stranded at the side of the A14 waiting for the RAC to show up. The RAC tried to repair the car at the roadside and after removing the O/S/F inner wheel lining to get access to the belt he decided that it was not something he could do at the roadside. He got the car to my dealer who then charged me £386 to replace the belt and tensioner and refit the wheel liner??  I paid £424 for the cambelt and water pump.  May be they were overcharging me because last week they quoted me £391 for the fresh air blower and a further £100 to fit it, luckily I had read a thread in this forum a couple days earlier about where to get a cheaper blower and how easy it was to fit so brought my own blower for £148 and 30 minutes work and its working a treat.

Hi Graham,

Had the work done on Wednesday. Cambelt, Water Pump and Tensioners. Not sure about the Aux Belt, but will check when I get the bill. Told me my bill will be around £430. It's my local garage, and have been going there for years, so has my wife. Sorry to hear about your problems.

You guys are so lucky where you all live. I'm in the one time oil capital (or near as damn it) and dealer was going to charge over eight hundred without mentioning the water pump or aux belt till I mentioned a rival independent quitting slightly less but including everything else that may need doing at some point for another extortionate amount. I dumped my dealer and now have car serviced local to me by VW specialist. Prices have been much fairer too.

If it was a Skoda dealer, at worst they should be charging the prices on the Skoda UK website. Good you got sorted out elsewhere.

I paid £480 all-in at VWX in Hexham (an excellent, time served VAG indie - ex master tech runs the place). Genuine parts and so fully covered by warranty. Honestly, find a great indie and stick with them. They will look after you long after a dealer has forgotten about you.
