Pickup 1.9 - Bad frotn tyres wear

Featured Replies

Hi all and thanks in advance to who will reply. Sorry if alredy asked, i looked for in other topics but could not find answers specifically.

I drive a 1.9D pickup that have had poor manteinance and has bad tyres wear (it wears front tyres in and outside ) , there are a lot of clicking noise when pass over small bumps. I suspect that all the front suspension compartment need to be refurbished : lower arms, top mount and of course dampers(maybe else , let me know if you have suggestions).

So the question is : where to start? Because i need to replace tyres but i cannot afford the price for all the "packet" in one time.

So advice are welcome!

@Zimo - Well, I'd start by checking the tyre pressures are correct if you've got wear on both edges of both tyres. After that, rather than starting to throw money at the suspension, check the wheel bearings plus all bushes and swivels (top, bottom and outer track rod end) for wear, and that the front springs haven't broken (most likely to happen near the top mounts. So far I've spent nothing!

Thank for the reply Ken

Tyre pressuere of course are ok (given for granted ;) ) i've also tried to over inflate but nothing or little change( at least on the ouside of tires)

I've found on the net new, complete of bushings and baljoint lower arms as couple for about 100€ ( is a good price?  ) and both front strut around 100€ too . So still want to know on which i have to pull the trigger first not to wear new tyres too soon....

springs not checked ( unfortunatelly given for granted too ) but indeed have to check them.

Wheel bearings checked by hand and are not bad so far

Upper strut mount I have to ask to my local skoda dealer if they still sell all the puzzle pieces because i'm not see nothing on rapid view .

Well, FWIW, if that's an entire strut and not "just" the damper insert, I'd expect that price to include a new spring and upper mount.

Other update:

Changed bushings and endlinks of the antiroll bar, tried to change the track rod joints but not reach to remove becuse the conical part dont want to came off. I have 2 "screw exctractor"( dont know how is it call) but none is suitable for the work...neither the big hammer 😅😭🤣🤣... i have a friend to lend another exctractor and i will try again.

While hammering i noticed that the brake callipers have "play" on the shaft where they slide and produce a noise that is what i can here more while drivng....so another piece of manteinance.

Ps.

I have change the strut, the big rubber round rubber and bearings but i'm not able to find the other metal parts of the suspension, is it possible that no one made them anymore?

Raise the front body on jacks, remove track rod end nuts, turn the steering wheel hard lock to lock to stress the joints. A 2 kg hammer will do the rest. Repeat.

Remember there is a pinned topic for online parts. By accessing the links of part catalogs you'll find drawings and part numbers. When you ask such questions you literally put us to look for info about those parts for you...

I know we don't always agree, but you'd read these posts as "I can't be bothered looking for part numbers/prices myself" too?

Thanks Ricardo for the reply.

Trust me , my question was only to chat , maybe with other members that have encounter this "problems".  I will double check with this site that i found here on an other topic

It was a silly question like the one on the other tread about the coolant liquid.

Again, many thanks

Well then, if you did everything right so far, yet the TRE didn't pop out, you have only one last solution. When everything else fails, use the RED wrench. It is the generic name for the blow torch. Since you'll discard the TRE anyway, apply a lot of heat on the area shown in the picture (not the bolt!) then smack it with a sledgehammer.
