Spare wheel kit?

Featured Replies

Has anyone got the spare wheel kit from skoda?

I'm told I've exists, comes with a space saver, Jack and new polystyrene insert.

If so, any idea how much it is?

Does a space saver fit on the front of the vRS over the brakes or does it have to go on the back?

I don't really like the idea of the foam stuff, likely to make a right mess of a wheel.

I asked this and the salesman said it washed out of tyres and leaves no mess. Don't know if that's true.

On a front drive car the space saver should go on the rear anyway.  Lateral forces are much greater under steering.  Also the offset thus steering geometry get confused too.

If it fits over the rear brakes (which I'd be surprised if it didn't) then go for it.  It's emergency use anyway.

Try getting a tyre that you've used the gunk on repaired ....

Good luck finding a tyre centre that'll wash out the tyre and repair it. Anybody I've spoken to about this says the car will require a new tyre.

besides, these repair kits can only be used in certain circumstances. Much, much better off caryying a spare or space saver.

Yeah I'm using the one off my golf, just stating what the salesman told me.

I've definitely been told by multiple sources that the tyre will need to be replaced if you use it.  I've heard this told to people in tyre shops when getting new ones.

I've also heard that cleaning the wheel is something that is a right pain for tyre shops and they don't really like it.

TBH I've had various punctures over the years, all of which have been repairable as in the main tread, I wouldn't like to risk ruining the tyre or having the resultant hassle of having the wheel cleaned etc.

I also don't really want to be stranded waiting for the breakdown people over a puncture when it's a 5-10 min job to swap on a spare.  I just want to change it and get going/home/where I'm going, then pay £15 for a 10 minute puncture repair when I'm not trying to get somewhere.

I wouldn't trust what salesmen say also...  most of them have never had dirt under their nails and the idea of changing a wheel is the stuff of their nightmares.

To be fair - a tyre centre is going to want to sell you a £90+ tyre rather than go through the hassle of attempting to get all the gunk out of the tyre, repair the damage and then only charging you £40 or so.

However there is also a safety aspect as well -  a tyre centre likes to fit a new tyre as they know it will be safe. It's why your average tyre centre won't fit tyres you've supplied yourself, they have no idea of the origin etc.

I'm sure it can be done, but to be honest - I'll never use a can of gunk in one anyway, I'll stick to having a spare.

I always supply my own tyres...  but you're right, they are generally fussy and insist that it still has the manufacturers labels on from when it was delivered etc.

It's always my preference as I can get the tyres I want when they're on offer/in stock and not be held to ransom over what the tyre shops have in stock at the prices they are charging at the time.

I've heard people suggest that tyre places won't repair a puncture due to safety, however in reality if it's just a normal puncture in the main tread it's normally fine.  If it's anywhere near the sidewall then it's a no.  Obviously if it's been in for ages and caused a gash then it's a different story too.  I think they have a max drill size they can safely go to.

I ordered the steel full sized tyre 'space saver' kit from Skoda 30 months ago ago when I bought my current car, it was around £160+ iirc

On a recently delivered Kia ditto (really is a skinny space saver) was around £140. Both are essential imho. One electrical compressor in the garage is enough though.

I spoke to Skoda Northampton a while back when I had my pre face lifted mk3. Think they can supply said spare wheel and relevant tools for bout £200 ish give or a take a bit eyther side.

Im fairly sure theres a place in the Manchester area that sells spare wheels.

Popped into the local dealer (skoda, not drug) and asked.  £210.

Could be worse.

Will hold off for a bit as only just got the car but suspect I'll invest at some point.

You do realise that by saying  your are holding off, you have now  alerted the fate god's, and you will get a puncture

This is true.

Problem is I need to fix the blowing exhaust on my accord first...

when i got mine last November I was quoted £160. This was while purchasing an approved used car. I said do it for half price and i will have it. They agreed.

Bargain compared to other options.

worth asking

Buying another car to get discount may work out a bit more pricey tho...

I took the spare tyre, poly insert and jack out of my Oct 2 when I sold it and put it in my Oct 3.  Maybe try a scrappy for the bits.
