Hi all,

Have a nice little fabia and I'm liking the new experience of it. I'm new to the engine diagnostic scheme but not new to the mechanic scheme. Anybody recommend a particular useful code reader for the fabia. I tried my brothers but it didn't actually connect to the exhaust engine management system, it was an obd 2 blue tooth elm i think? but could be wrong!, downloaded an app and i had the dreaded circle of death. Looking on the net here are a lot to choose from and different prices. Prefer to see what codes have come up before just resetting the light and seeing if it comes on again... If you have a windows laptop already then you can just buy a USB to OBD lead and download VCDS lite for free, if you want it unlocked just pay $99 for a licence.

It's worth it, the DTC's are much more detailed and comprehensive.

It's also completely legit.

I had one of these and it worked perfectly well for basic fault codes....

I'll have to look up the vcds lite and dtc , not much good with the abbreviations , thanks for the advice.

U281 Fault Code diagnostic Scanner Works With Airbag Abs Engine On V W and VAG, so i bought this one in the end, which was a good recommendation, it picks up the fault codes and and they can be reset. It is basic though and will not give any further fault diagnosis when the engine is running like i've seen on some of the blue tooth type obd ii code readers with the app downloaded. At least i can reset the code and get back home if the engine goes into safe mode notwithstanding that it is safe to do that!! thanks for all the advice
