Front fog lights not working

Featured Replies

Hello forum

I've pulled the light switch out once and twice, but the front fog lights don't come on. The fog light dash indicator comes on and there's no blown bulb indicator showing. Any ideas?

Thanks!

I take it you have ignition switched on or engine running?

Do they only work with the engine running and the headlights on?

Thanks AG Falco

You should be able to operate the front fog lights without  headlights on? (I believe this applies to any car). The reason being that when it is very foggy, the headlights may create a glare for the driver.....

Ignition on and also tried with engine running and turning steering in case it was to do with cornering, but no joy.

With one of my car's, not a Skoda, you need the side lights on before the front fog lights work.

I find it helps if you lower the aim of the dipped headlights in fog to reduce glare.

On most cars you need the headlights on before the rear fog lights will work.

Thanks AG Falco

@muddyjim

If front fog lights can work without the lights on, Sidelight/Position lights to Front and rear as a minimum then you could have Front Fog Lights and no rear lights

on as happens with DRL's where drivers are that stupid it is lighting up time / reduced visibility conditions and all they have is DRL's to the front which really pee off other drivers and are a danger anyway with only reflectors at the rear.

As to Glare and thinking that Sidelights and Foglights is satisfactory so you can see, that is time that you should get off the road or give up driving IMO.

You will probably find that its the switch that's knocked, had the same problem some time ago, bought a cheap Chinese job, same problem, opened up the switch and a track on the internal pcb was burnt out. Picked up a secondhand one off ebay for a Tiguan or touran for peanuts, opened it up, scratched the protective film near the terminal junctions and soldered a wire jumper across, not had probs since.

Is your car 2013? may have been a bad batch of switches!

2012 @Frenchtone also it probably doesn't help that it's a CAT C and so may have been damaged.

@Urrell

Yes they serve a purpose to help see, and the headlights are required for see and be seen.

Plenty do seem to think in the UK Sidelights just and fog lights in fog is OK or in snow.

When caught in the worst of conditions it is usual for anyone with sense to try what works best, if the Fogs do the job,

or did some nutter upgrade Fog Bulbs to give a nicer colour when they are Cornering Fogs like with some Yeti's.

Very nice to their mind and useless in fog.

I have got off the road in the past in real fog when following the side of the road was near impossible and muppets were going about in sidelights, faulty lights etc.

A suggestion like in this thread of Fogs and no lights needed is a classic.

Regardless of peoples views on fog lights, they should work when the sidelights or headlights are on in a Yeti although not in the auto position.

Given you have the green dash light working showing they are on, that suggests the switch is working.

I'd probably double check the bulbs are correctly fitted. Seems odd they aren't working and there are no bulb out warnings, most obvious thing in my mind is someone fitted cheap LED's that have failed but also used load resistors to avoid bulb out warnings.

You can also use VCDS or similar to check for any fault codes :)

Should work when Side Lights or sidelights and Dipped Headlights are on.

I have not suggested that one should drive with only front foglights and no sidelights; indeed I don't think it's physically possible? On my last car the switch could not be pulled out unless the SIDE lights are on as a minimum. I presume this is the same on the yeti. The whole point of fog lights is that they are lower down than headlights so they 'cut through' the fog more efficiently as fog is generally less dense nearer the ground.

Legally, there is a specific exclusion for the need to use headlights in poor visibility PROVIDING foglights are used (with side lights). And I have only done that if the headlights have caused a glare due to the fog being so dense....

Is it an unwritten legal exclusion or just one police accept about not using headlights if fog light on?

The Highway code does have a Grey Area where it say referring to 226 and the

'Use your lights as required.'

Neither - It is quite clearly stated in writing in the Road Vehicle lighting regulations 1989

Quote

25.—(1) Save as provided in paragraph (2), no person shall use, or cause or permit to be used, on a road a vehicle which is fitted with obligatory dipped-beam headlamps unless every such lamp is kept lit–

(a)during the hours of darkness, except on a road which is a restricted road for the purposes of section 81 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 by virtue of a system of street lighting when it is lit; and

(b)in seriously reduced visibility.

(2) The provisions of paragraph (1) do not apply

....in seriously reduced visibility, a pair of front fog lamps which is so fitted that the outermost part of the illuminated area of each lamp in the pair is not more than 400 mm from the outer edge of the vehicle is kept lit;

It seems no one prosecutes for having fog lights on inappropriately, instead we all have to put up with the “posers” who think they are special.

When mine played up, didn't get any warnings of bulb out etc, found out driving one night when it was foggy!

I believe it's a fixed penalty offence, so you don't get prosecuted per se unless you opt to take it to court.

I have heard reports of police stopping drivers using foglights illegally and issuing FPNs but I reckon it's one of those things that's become so prevalent that it's probably impossible to bring it back under control without a swingeing crackdown* which would inevitably be portrayed amongst certain parts of the media as part of the "war on the motorist".

There are 3 threads in the Fabia MK2 section with posts from members that were stopped by Police Officers when driving Mk2 Fabia vRS for driving with Front Fog Lights on when not appropriate.

Thing is Skoda never fitted Front Fog Lights to Mk2 Fabia vRS, they just said they did in Brochures, Configurators and Adverts for Used Cars.

(Highest priced Fabia model & with 180PS in 2010-2014 yet no Front Fog lights or even the Option to have them.)

What they did was used the position that Fog Lights might normally be in and fitted dual DRL's / Sidelights.  Sidelights with Headlights on are dimmer than DRL but still a PITA.

Similar Unit was used on some Volvo and Porsche.

Police officers looked like Rodney Plonker.

(As do MOT Examiners that fail these car for no Sidelights because they are checking the dummy blue bulb in the headlight.)

Correct, and I have heard of people getting FPN's because of it. Certain Police forces are more stringent that others!
