Is Dacia producing the low cost / value new cars people want that Skoda no longer offer?

Featured Replies

No small Automatic petrol or diesel Skoda anymore as stopped building Citigo 2 pedal cars a while back & now the ICE Citigo discontinued,

and Fabia DSG no more as all you can get is a petrol manual.

Dacia Automatic models pretty limited as well.

Well, I would consider a Logan if they weren't so coy about in-gear performance, and even "official test regime" fuel figures and carbons.

After i posted that this morning a saw 4 Logans in town within a 2 mile area.   People with dogs seem to like them.

Loads of other Dacia about, but then i live where people know the value of money and there is a Renault / Dacia dealership 15 miles away.

1, 2, 3, Another one drives a Duster...

They seem unaccountably popular, but then I don't understand why anyone buys an SUV...

I think the same is true of Kia. They were budget 'value' cars like Skoda and once established they move on with better equipped cars at higher prices.

@moley

I had a 2006 Picanto Auto and it was £9,000 is back then, that is the starting price of a basic one now.

Rio's start at £12,500 and a Stonic is near £17,000.

I was in the Kia dealers this morning but still no news on any of the Niro, hybrid, plug in or EV's being able to get a tow pack.

and nothing on the Soul EV's.

Dad's mate has one and loves it. He's got his second on order now.

They do have a rather odd seating position which put me off.

What i do like is the ground clearance of the AWD or FWD.

If you are sitting behind one you will see how flat the underside looks & sensible width of tyres for snow, or for fitting snow tyres too,

and no sticky down bits (handy for farm tracks) unlike you might see on so many so called SUV's even actual 4x4 / awds on their wide / low profile tyres.

Dad's mate is a tight ****. But he's happy to think he's getting a new 'proper' 4x4 for under £20k.

I've no idea what the going rate on the 4x4 version is but I think his first was about £15k new.

When a second hand Corsa is over £10k £15 for a new 4x4 no matter how tinny or poorly equipped looks pretty good value.

Remember being on holiday in Barcelona in May 2012 and seeing lots of adverts for the then new Duster with prices starting from 8,995 Euro's and thinking it would be a popular family car for those that wanted a basic new car (with that all important warranty to some) big enough and dirt cheap on a lease or PCP.

Theres a Dacia on a TV Advert that has a lawn mower fitted, now that's " Simply Clever ".

Likely that Advert will be banned now, bloke driving car and cutting grass, risky sexist.

And wife drinking a grass smoothie - toxic!!

Right hand drive  Sandero versions are assembled in India. Thought about buying one, before assessing the Citigo......

Build quality is an aquired taste.Basic trim level for the money  - by my standards as a sassenach.   Rather too wide to be a comfortable fit when driving into a home garage,so it was dismissed .Couldn't live with it as a package.  Vive la differance!

Yes producing budget cars, something Skoda seem to have dropped in favour of more expensive, less durable cars

If you buy he more upmarket Duster, can get the Renault-Nissan-Mercedes 1.3 engine which is probably better than Skoda 1.5tsi

I know someone who had a Felicia estate for over 15 years, and I still occasionally see Mk1 Octavia around (both of which would have been deemed budget cars at the time, but are lasting much better than some modern cars 2-3 times their price)

Duster? Nah. I for one won't be buying a car built in Morocco. Or India to be honest.

Turkish products are bad enough - nasty cheap zombie brand TVs (BUSH HITACHI POLAROID) and fridges that burn the house down, but manufacturing standards in those other countries are way more 3rd world.

Modern production methods didn't stop the Indian built Duster's rusting apart.

The rust issues were caught quite early and cars were replaced in the UK where there were issues.

I did inspections a few years back and there was a thread in this section on the issues.

Not a competitor maybe, but still in production where the Skoda Yeti no longer is.

If Skoda CZ / UK etc had acted as quick with the Zinc Inclusion issues that would have been simply clever.

  • 4 months later...

The wife has a Dacia Sandero Stepway which is her second and she loves it . I had a Superb 280 L&K which was tremendous but too big ,too fast and too uneconomic for me. I currently have a Seat Toledo 1.0 Xcellence which is my fourth Rapid/ Toledo. There is something about the Toledo/Rapid which keeps drawing me back and the fact is that I just like them and they suit me. When I drive the wife's Dacia my objective assessment is that it is great fun and does everything a car needs to do. However when I get back in the Toledo I feel like I am driving a Limousine in comparison. Even though the Rapid/Toledo is comparative old tech and now replaced with the Scala the Dacia still feels 15 years behind it. I offered to replace the wife's car with one of the last Toledos but she won't hear of it. No accounting for taste then and after all her taste is suspect as she married me!

The only quality of Dacia cars is the low price. Then you will regret the day you made the decision of buying one. Cheap quality, low reliability, expensive parts. They are the Chinese cars of Europe.

@RicardoM

UK buyers seem happy to buy and keep them and there are ones that have more than one Dacia model in the family and are return customers buying new or used having had owned ones already.

Not quite sure on the low reliability and expensive parts, but there are members here that have ones so they can maybe comment.

@lol-lol is someone i am thinking of.

Crap.

They are Renault using the previous platforms in some cases but with up to date turbo petrols with great emissions.  Shame the auto options not here in the UK unlike mainland Europe. Check your text for facts.

Dacia/Renault have built cars in Africa and Asia as have many brands.  My Logan I did 65k miles was a great car and I got £1k over book when trading in at the end of lease as there market value was so up compared to originally expected.

Car easily achieved sub 25 ppm running cost and was comfy, quiet.  Octy is better but twice the price.

Are service / consumable parts the same as Renault ones and the same price?

Than for other parts if required for a Dacia, do you know if they are they more expensive than anyone would expect to paying?
