hi folks just bought a 2014 Octavia but air con not working garage put 3oo of gas in no change but saw a chart that says it needs 490 would it need the 490 or would there be some cold air with just 300  refrigerant quantity any ideals

What your garage should have done was a leak test to make sure the system is intact. You should still get some cold air coming out with 300g of refrigerant.

they seem to think its the compressor is not working got a display message after saying can needs to be started for air con but the car was running at the time
