Second speedo in centre of dash only reads in KM per hour

Featured Replies

My wife has just bought a 2016 1.2 tsi sel dsg Yeti, her bigest bugbear is that the main analogue speedo only reads in 20mph increments with small lines for the intermediate speeds, i.e between the marked 20mph & 40mph there are 3 lines, presumably to indicate 25, 30 & 35mph.

There is a second speedo in the centre of the instruments, but this only reads in KMPH, the supplying dealer says that this CANNOT be changed to read in MPH.

Does anyone know, if the dealer goes in via the OBD with the 5051, can they change this to MPH? My own guess is that they could, as there must be an alternative setting for LHD cars as their main speedo would only read in KMPH.

I know that re-setting the centre speed readout to MPH would technically against section 35 of the Cunstruction & use regs 1986, However, in our ownership of this car, the likelyhood of it going abroard is hovering around ZERO!

My Fabia with this engine and gearbox configuration had the option to display speed in MPH.  Don't have the car any more but I think you changed the readings in the maxidot display by going into the settings menu via the 'car' button on the radio.  It could certainly be done on my ex Fabia and I would be surprised if the Yeti wasn't the same.  A quick look in the manual will point you in the right direction.  Manuals are available on line if you didn't get one with the car.  Simply type in 'Skoda Manuals' in the search box then select the car and year in the drop down menus.  You then get a PDF version of the manual on screen.

There is no car button or any settings available via the radio in a Yeti :)

As mentioned above, this change needs VCDS or similar to change the instrument cluster coding.

Carista OBD11 dongle will do that, Available with 1 month of pro features from Amazon.
I added MPH to the Maxidot display on my Yeti and changed a few other features too.

You are not meant to be able to change this in the UK as Skoda has set it up that way. If you use the Dongle and access software to modify the software in the car, you can tell it it is an Australian car which uses km for their distances and also normally displays km in the centre, but gives you the option to change the display to mph in the centre display in the position as above, or a large display with other information missing. Logical if you think about it, as most cars in Australia will never be used in a mph country, whereas we may well drive in kmh country and must by law be able to see our speed in kmh when there.

It is not very helpfull though, as just as innacurate as the speedo, so when say indicating 70mph, you will actually only be doing an exact 64/65mph. And if you use a built in sat nav, this display is taken for that use anyway so you can't display the large digital speed, only the small one.

I just remember that a displayed 118kmh is a true 70mph, 101 a true 60mph, 85 a true 50mph, 69 a true 40mph and 53 a true 30mph. (In my car calibrated using a true speed app on my phone, or the true speed shown on a ata nav such as TomTom, your car may be slightly different. Indeed I have seen threads where this has been changed in the settings as well so that the speed indicated is more accurate?))

Using these i am always overtaking most traffic in average speed areas and on controlled motorways, but know I am not speeding. Indeed I could go slightly faster and still not be in a penalty speed, but I prefer to stick to the real speed limits. I have been doing this for at least 10 years and never been over the limit yet in a camera zone.

Is it not easier to remember 33 = 30, 44 = 40, 55 = 50, 66 = 60 and 77 = 70, I have checked this with my GPS that gives true readings unlike the speedo on most cars..

I find the MPH display very handy, most new Skoda's  and other cars now have the option to display both.

And adding the MPH option also puts a tick box in the Maxidot menus to give the option of displaying either KPH or MPH in seconds.

No, I think it is easier  to remember something separate from the mph than get confused between 70 and 77.

Plus the fact that it is more accurate using KMh as there are more of them so the change from say 118 to 119 is only just 5/8ths of a mph

How can you get confused with reading 70 as 77?

I cannot see how putting the 1st figure into the second can be confusing, why not add knots into the equation to make it even easier too.

Ask your dealer, or find an enthusiast on Briskoda, to reset your computer to Australia. This will then display mph.

You are breaking no law by doing so. A vehicle only has to be capable of showing mph and kph.

Dealer will not do it.

The equipment the dealers have will not do this alteration.

And I fail to see what law is being broken; the speedo shows MPH, the Maxidot KPH. All the Law requires is that both are displayed.

Dealer level diagnostic equipment most certainly can make this change...

However, it's more challenging finding a dealer who's happy to tweak things and knows what they're doing as it's less obvious than VCDS :)

Brilliant thread guys!

i was wondering about the kph rather than mph readings and this sounds a great fix!
