Thinking about an Induction Kit? vRS TSI

Featured Replies

Ok so for some strange reason I find myself looking at induction kits for the vRS (TSI) from the APR carbon, VWR600 & the RamAir Jetstream, I have a stage 1 with a Remus exhaust system so thinking to add an induction kit to the list of mods.

I currently have a Racing-line panel filter in the standard air-box which has performed perfectly fine since it was installed last year, as I'm due a service next month, I'm thinking I might as well change to a induction kit. If it gives more power? I don't mind, if it don't give more power? I don't mind, I actually like the throttle lift off/on noise but at the same time I don't want it over powering on the noise factor.

I do like the look of all 3 induction kits mentioned above & in that order I've stated but can anyone who has a (TSI) comment & offer some information or insight if you liked the change from standard air-box to induction or did you eventually go back to standard air-box because it wasn't cracked up to be what you thought!

Also for anyone who has the APR carbon intake, did you buy the additional coolant hose to re-route underneath the intake or just use the factory standard coolant hose.

Thanks.

Boy who mapped my car said they were a huge waste of money.

I asked him advice on how to get more power out mines, and he said the only worthwhile thing to do, before you start chucking turbos at it, would be increase the full exhaust systems diameter. New DVs/CAIs/performance air filters etc. were just a waste of money as you'll never notice the difference in power, and some of them can actually make it worse depending on the map itself.

I hear what you are saying, as the company who mapped my car did say similar things about the induction kit but did also say it is better purely for air-flow! I did a few years back change the DV to a GFB-DV but I did not like it so sold it on & stayed with the factory original DV.

Have you upgraded the turbo inlet elbow?

Nope I have not! Some of the induction kits do come with the option to have the turbo inlet elbow upgrade with a silicone intake pipe (like the RamAir) which comes with it as a package for £280.00 all in, I think the APR & VWR600 you have to pay extra for the turbo inlet elbow & starts getting ridiculously out of price range, If I remember correctly?

Also if I remember correctly "again" :D the APR carbon recommends you keep the existing plastic intake pipe & bolt on from the circular clip (air-box side) so no need to change to a silicone intake pipe but with the option I presume to change the turbo inlet too? (if you want to)

Most people recon the standard paper filter is good for well north of 300bhp.

On my 245 first remap with everything standard including airbox/panel filter saw 302bhp and 467nm on the dyno so as flybynite states no real need to change the induction system unless you like the better noise it brings or want to go the stage 2. Mine now running 3" exhaust all the way from the downpipe plus Airtec cone filter with heatshield and Airtec intercooler gave an extra 34bhp and 50nm but at a cost (£2,700 more).

The turbo inlet is the main restriction on the intake system, I bought a bms one along with a Forge silicon inlet hose which was pretty cheap. Bhp figures are one thing, but what a freer flowing intake will do is help the turbo spool quicker and sustain boost through the rev range although again in the overall scheme of things the performance advantage is minute. If you're after the nice spooly noises an open intake will give you the best noise but not quite as low intake temps; R600 is the best flowing; APR carbon is a bit of a ripoff but looks sweet and Ramair is well priced🙂

This site is super helpful - http://mygolfmk7.com/best-mk7-gti-air-intake/

I appreciate mine is a diesel, but I'm getting better airflow from the intake mod I did. Blocking the outlet in the engine bay and opening up the passenger side inlet.

You can get a blanking plate rather than 'sellotaping' it up like I've done.

IIRC this is the correct blanking plate - NEW GENUINE VW GOLF MK7 2013-2017 REAR AIR INTAKE TRIM PLATE 5Q0129849

Now the manufactured equivalent of the mod is this CARBON SERIES | MQB AIR SCOOP

I've took the 'snow' filter out as well. Can't say either of said tweaks have increased the intake sound.

APR carbon

I've got this - and love it, but mainly because I can't bring myself to recollect how expensive the whole unit was. I believe the actual company who develop it ('Carbonio'?) can do it like £200 without the APR sticker on it... but can't find links to it. Having fitted it prior to my map, car felt like it breathed better but that might have been me subconsciously hoping / expecting it would for the price.

Personally, having driven around with @jaygemson and @Chris245's RacingLine R600 intakes, it sounds better if you're concerned about that type of thing - R600 is more 'whooshy', APR sounds more compressed but still audible.

Agree the turbo elbow replacement made the most amount of difference across all the intake components 👍🔥

Cheers everyone for their input, that link @StealthRS245

Has some very good testing results, just a shame they didn't test the RamAir Jetstream as I find myself drawn to that particular one, but at the same time it is fully open unlike the VWR600 & APR which still gives great sound even though they are enclosed, choices...choices.

But definitely great results from most intakes in that link especially from the top 3-4 being very close.

Watched a few YouTube videos on pretty most all intakes & on eBay the people that have purchased the RamAir Jetstream seem very pleased with it & it seems much better priced with everything (TIE, intake & pipe)

The VWR600 & APR I'm definitely not ruling out but once purchased with the additional TIE & hose etc the price can be on the expense side! But at the same time will it be worth the extra money? As I'm thinking the RamAir should be more than adequate for the task especially comparing it to the standard oem box.

@Ads230

Thanks for the info regards sounds etc I suppose I would like either one between them 2 as I've watched a few YouTube vids & actually like the sound they both produce & it does seem the VWR600 produces better flow but then I do like the aesthetics of the APR more-so. How long have you had the APR intake & how do you find the enclosed filter? I've read that it is best to keep the standard black plastic pipe (oem) from the TIE to the APR intake? Have you done this or changed to a complete new silicone hose all the way to the TIE?

Cheers guys 😎

For about 4 months less than I've owned the car; so about 2 years 6 months. Enclosed filter seems good, and have had no issues thus far - it's basically a bigger version of the old K&N filter I had on my old car (only cylindrical, rather than conical).

The one thing I would say about the aesthetics is that it's a complete PITA to do any maintenance, as you have to remove the '1000' (~12) hex screws around the base of the intake to remove the filter. I only did this a month ago, and then did the (probably highly controversial) water wash > long dry > oil respray > wipe > dry > re-install etc.

I had this setup for about a year before replacing it with the Racingline silicone pipe and elbow, which made considerable difference to pick-up (elbow, probably - not necessarily the silicone). The OEM pipe will probably do, although it looks naff to keep it as that... My current setup is APR c/f intake with the few inches of c/f pipe leading to the Racingline pipe & elbow. Looks and functions perfectly.

Which Inlet /outlet/elbow pipe you guys recomend? And where to buy it?

Don't forget the turbo muffler delete as well but, it's not cheap

Yep if you want to go full out, think I've seen the R600 intake, silicone hose, turbo elbow & muffler delete all in, for under £700.00

Picked mine up pre-loved for £300

Update new Racingline R600 intake, turbo inlet, hose & coolant hose installed today :) decided to go with the Racingline in the end purely for the OEM look B) also enjoying the noises :D

Thanks to everyone for their input, appreciated  ;)
