Jump-starting another car

Featured Replies

Jump-starting the Octavia is described in the manual re connecting the negative wire to the special connection point, not at the negative terminal of the battery. Are there any special consideration when i jump-start another car?

The car is Octavia MK3 FL, 1.6TDI with start-stop. The car with the dead battery is Kia ceed, 1.4 petrol.

Not an expert on this stuff by any means, but I guess you would have to look up where to hook up the wires on the other car. I did this only a few time but I always let them sit a while, hooked up, engine running and then before trying to start the dead car applying a bit of throttle in your skoda. Good luck!

My question is related to this point in the manual regarding jump-starting the Octavia equipped with start-stop system.

Any special consideration where that same Octavia is the battery "donor"? What connection point should be used on the Octavia?

I think it should be the same. I was jumpstarting a Clio with a Superb and hooked it up as the manual says and didn't have any problems (Superb was the donor car).

So, on the Škoda, was the negative on the battery or on the ground point?

Ground point.

I hadn't needed to jump start a car for years but when our Boxer horse box refused to start a mechanic friend  advised me be very careful how you go. It could spike the ecu on not only the donor but the car with the flat battery and if you did go ahead make sure the jump leads are as attached as shown in the hand book and said something about putting the head lights on on the donor car. The AA eventually came out and started with a anti spike jump pack.
