  • This could be summarised slightly easier.   The most powerful engines in both cars are 2.0 petrol turbos producing around 240bhp.   The Mondeo weighs 200kg more than the Octavia.

  • Cough*** K Series Head Gasket ***Cough

  • Mondeo's used to be great to drive, but the latest one is a world car and is built for cruising comfort which doesn't suit the European market as well.   Saying that some of the extra weight

As I said everyone is entitled to their opinion (I jokingly said "even if you are wrong")

Your clearly very happy with your Audis and your "bits o'tin and bits o'boards". I'm very happy with my skodas, so we are not likely to agree. So stop f**king arguing would you.

I'm not sure what you are saying about competing, but it's true that, unlike the MQB Octy, the A4 is MLB or MLBevo in the latest model.  It seems that MQB is for transversely mounted drive trains and MLB is for longitudinally mounted.  I understand that transverse mounting is better for cabin space which might explain why Gmac found the A4 to be cramped.

Transverse is bad for leg room due to the firewall being pushed back. That is the worst thing about my VRS. Legs wrapped around the steering wheel. Not comfortable on long journeys. Longitudinal restricts width a little but gives much better leg room. I find the A4 far more comfortable than octy and A6 is even better.

Been close to a S4  wish I had got it, but went A6 Quattro instead. Really like the last S4 /5. Current one is a crappy diesel so won't sell many of those

I also had Mondeo 3.0V6, Octavia and Fabia at the same time. (2009)

The Mondeo was in a different class for driving and interior but the Octy and Fabia were mid spec models, both 1.9TDi's

Are you referring to my VRS 😭

So is anyone on here actually comparing like for like, spec for spec in this thread?

As Superb is more of a true competitor to the mondeo. Octy is obviously smaller.

No I wasn't. I used to own a Mk2 face-lift vrs (petrol model) and absolutely loved it.

I'll give you the whole verse then:

Bits o'tin and bits o'boards go together to make auld Fords. (apologies for my obviously poor attempt at humor).

Had 3 Mondeo's Mk 2/3 and 4 all excellent cars. I think the last version is still a lovely looking car. I would have got one way before my VRS if they still put the 250hp petrol in. Just crappy diesels and small petrols now.

I had a Cougar with that V6 in ( designed by Cosworth) Lovely engine in it,s day.

Nee bother. Place needs livening up and maybe waking up 😀

I'll give you that on the Ford v6. It was a belter.

True. Prefer Mondeo as a car and certainly the looks. But would want the 2.0 turbo Superb engine in it! Or Ford's 2.0 or 2.3 Turbo.

I had use of the Ford whilst the skoda was in the garage. I thought I would just post what I thought,  maybe I gave the thread the wrong title....... either way I know they are from different classes but that to me makes the octavia even better at what it does. The boot is very nearly just as big and I find it more useable than the fords was. The driving position in the Ford is horrible, the skoda is perfect. The performance of the Ford, I know it's not supposed to be sporty, was just a bit flat and boring. The infotainment is about 10 years behind VAG and once you have been able to connect more than one phone at a time going back to just one is prehistoric!

Oh and the Octavia VRS in velvet red with the black bits and big wheels just looks mean/sexy! The Ford looks like dog food which has been regurgitated lol

They bolted 2 of those V6 engines together to make the original 6.0 litre V12 Aston Martin engine which although down on power compared to the opposition sounded great.:)

I had.

Mk1 1.8TD

Mk2 2.0 16V

Mk2 2.5V6

Mk3 2.0TDi 130

Mk3 3.0V6

Mk4 2.0TDi 140

I tried the new one in 180TDi Dual Clutch Auto and 2.0 Ecoboost Conventional Auto but found them just totally uninspiring, more like an Insignia to drive. I bought a slightly older XF instead,

Was going well until the "driving position in Ford is horrible" for gowds sake that is the opposite opinion of every living person that has reviewed a Mondeo. The handling and driving position in nearly all Ford's are second to none far better than a leg room short Octavia with its off centre steering wheel. I didn't read any further. 😭

I just couldnt get comfy in it! No matter where I had the wheel or seat it just felt horrible. It has the leather electric memory seats and I just cannot get it right! I'm about to take it to Arnold Clarke and sell it for a massive loss!!

Very strange. Think I could go around the world in a Mondeo in perfect comfort, not many cars I could say that for. My A6's yes and my daughter's Q7.

Know your Mondeo's then! Surprised you went Skoda after Ford. Then your sort of nearly back to Ford with your XF. Another car I've looked at a few times. It's big!

I see you had a 140 TDI MK4. We have that engine in our Galaxy. It's no secret I don't normally like diesels (had loads!) But that engine is a good one. Pulls like a train, feels way more than 140hp and after 106000 Miles, runs as new without fault. None of this dpf obsessed saga you read on here. You don,t know when it does regens undetectable. And aversges 45mpg caning it in a Galaxy. I guess it's a PSA engine not a ford version and PSA have always known how to make diesels.

One observation I might make. Test drove an Smax once back in 2015 found it to be very spartan inside comparing spec for spec with a citroen c4 grand Picasso which we bought instead. Also found the Smax "cockpit" to be very cramped with poor visibility compared to its competitors with a poorly designed/layed out boot/3rd row seating area, overall it just seemed to be a poorly packaged product given the vehicles dimensions. It did handle quite well for a big bus though. Back then the kodiaq was still about a year away for a Skoda 7 seat option.

I had Skoda's as well as Ford's. We usually have two or three cars on the family fleet and pretty much mix and match. I've had thirteen Skoda's all listed in my signature.

Strangely on the road the XF doesn't feel as big as a Mk6 Mondeo. The new XF really doesn't have any Ford DNA  but mine uses the Ford RWD platform not sold in Europe

Smax is based on Galaxy, are you sure it wasn't a C max? Often get mixed up. The Galaxy (I am sitting in now) is massive inside, I can stretch out front and back and just about in 3rd row too but I use it as my van. Not been in a roomier car. The windows are massive and all you see is glass. Feel like the pope! Too much really it's like your in display! Ours is pfl Zetec so lacks a few toys but had all I need in it. Later 15 on model has everything. Keep thinking of changing it but never find anything that comes close to it apart from a fancy trick van or maybe but without the imense comfort ! I need to do some work!!!

I know the difference between a Cmax/grand Cmax, Smax and the Galaxy. I was not referring to the Galaxy at all, I'm well aware of its dimensions. I was talking about the Smax which I always thought was based on the the same platform as the mondeo, hence why I thought it relevant here and my opinion of it circa 2015 when I drove one.

In the 7 seat MPV sector space and practicality are top of the list and there are several 7 seat MPVs out there that do it better than an Smax from that perspective.

Ford has started to refine it's diesel engines (albeit PSA's engines) in the last decade. They did used to use their 2.2 diesels (same as the tranny van) in the mondeos, plus quite a few other models. and they sounded awful. The duratorq engines had that; torque. However, they were not suitable for anything but commercial use.

Since they ditched using them, they are now running the 2.0 duratec diesel PSA spec engines and they are smoother.

Smax is a Galaxy at front with a tapered rear robbing the rear of space for pure aesthetics.  Both are on the Mondeo platform. Both far bigger than a C4. That's the current models not the old joint venture with VAG

Yes the Ford designed (puma?)  chain driven tdci in 2.0 and 2.2 sounded awful gruff. Fitted to MK3 Mondeo, X type etc. The PSA versions are quite sweet for a diesel.  Their V6 is ok though. Still used in JLR's etc. Not as good as Audi's V6 diesel, if I had to have another diesel that would be it. But not in an S4 that's just silly.
