Octavia vs mondeo

Ford has started to refine it's diesel engines (albeit PSA's engines) in the last decade. They did used to use their 2.2 diesels (same as the tranny van) in the mondeos, plus quite a few other models. and they sounded awful. The duratorq engines had that; torque. However, they were not suitable for anything but commercial use.

Since they ditched using them, they are now running the 2.0 duratec diesel PSA spec engines and they are smoother.

The 2.2 as used in the Mk3 Mondeo ST TDCi and the Jaguar X-Type was the old duratorq. The later 2.2 Units with up to 200PS/450NM were PSA Units, these were also modified by Jaguar for longitudinal fitment in the XF.

The PSA 2.2 was still quite clattery at idle but certainly in the Jags quite refined at cruising speeds.

  • This could be summarised slightly easier.   The most powerful engines in both cars are 2.0 petrol turbos producing around 240bhp.   The Mondeo weighs 200kg more than the Octavia.

  • Cough*** K Series Head Gasket ***Cough

  • Mondeo's used to be great to drive, but the latest one is a world car and is built for cruising comfort which doesn't suit the European market as well.   Saying that some of the extra weight

That's probably more to do with their ability to sound insulate their cars. Adds weight, but adds comfort. Been in an XE and it's quiet as.

I had Skoda's as well as Ford's. We usually have two or three cars on the family fleet and pretty much mix and match. I've had thirteen Skoda's all listed in my signature.

Strangely on the road the XF doesn't feel as big as a Mk6 Mondeo. The new XF really doesn't have any Ford DNA  but mine uses the Ford RWD platform not sold in Europe

People say not Ford anymore but it looks almost identical and still uses ford V6 diesel and the interior switchgear still look Ford. I take no ford with a pinch of salt.

Ironic really, I only came close to buying jlr because of the Ford reassurance. Never like their LR 4wd vehicles at all. Apart from The F  4wd and love the F sports car. Plus I'm looking for a pre 2001 XK8 now.

Smax is a Galaxy at front with a tapered rear robbing the rear of space for pure aesthetics.  Both are on the Mondeo platform. Both far bigger than a C4. That's the current models not the old joint venture with VAG

I can 100% assure you that the Smax is not far bigger than a c4 grand Picasso. As far is interior space, flexibility and usability is concerned. My sister in-law owned one at the same time as our grand pic' and was absolutely not as good in everyday family abuse (I'm not saying the Smax is a bad car, just that there are better 7 seaters out there, it's big sister Galaxy included!) Smax boot might edge the grand pic' by a few litres but the Smax hasn't even got a flat boot floor for God's sake. Granted the Smax was sharper to drive as I already said but hers was a dog for reliability as well (who would have guessed the citroen would have been the more reliable of the 2 vehicles).

Same diesel mechanics with superior Ford electrics, mine has been 100 % reliable  apart from clutch pack at 96k under warranty.  They had a pup. Smax about 5" longer and wider ? 700 litre boot 3rd row down.

Had a few PSA cars, all had iffy electrics and poor build quality. Very poor really. They are claimed to be far better now, need to be because they we're crap, only time will tell with others as I wouldn,t spend my money again on one. Had new 207 and used 307 and a horribly ugly and thrown together 205. Oh and 3 company Xantia,s

Mondeo (Ford!) Vs Octavia but it has drifted a bit and livened up from dead

Yes Smax is a reverse tardis was longer/wider on the outside, smaller on the inside, what did Ford do with the space? Apart from a couple of aircon issues under warranty the old citroen was spot on.

I'll be honest I'm not a French car guy. Our c4 grand pic' was chosen after excruciating deliberation, in order to keep all parties in our house happy and my misses doesn't even drive!

I must say though, really not getting the Ford love affair, they're OK but not great. With a few classic fast Ford exceptions of course.

Can only be the back because back doors forward is Galaxy and nothing beats the Galaxy for space in the class. That's why Anderton Lee only use galaxy which is one of if not the roomiest 7 sesters.

The new XF platform is Jaguar and the 4 pot diesel and petrol engines are Jaguar Ingeniums. The 300PS 700NM V6 diesel and V6/V8 petrol were Ford but the licence agreement has now expired they are no longer available. A new deal has been signed with BMW for V8's and other engines TBC.

The inline 6 cylinder Jaguar Ingenium engine with mild hybrid is reported to be too long for the XF but I'm not sure is that's correct as it will fit in the J-Pace and Velar which use the same platform.  The BMW inline 6 will fit so watch this space.

The new models reliability has been a real let down though. the X250 was all proven tech and often topped the sector for customer satisfaction. The new X260 is mixed to say the least.

Latest Focus RS is pants always blowing up since they tried to save some pennies and fit the Mustang head gasket kit and had to recall them after many customers engines went boom.

Up to June 17 yes. No problems after but all earlier need the gasket replacing free under warranty even if expired. Was fitted by mistake due to an internal parts list error. But the RS is commanding brilliant  values hardly dropped from new cost after over 3 years. The heritage version is now double original price. Mad really. Still keep fancying one an 18 model will be about 28-30k !

They were trying to match the reliability of the VAG 1.4TSi Twin charger. ;)

How you liking your automatic SHY? You turn coat, let me down!

Was that a bad one? Wondered why it soon dissaoeated. Idea works very well on Volvo diesel marine engines.

I know someone who bought a 2016 Blue one new and he was shocked it was only doing 18mpg which was much higher than the Audi TT RS he had before that.:sweat:Just 9bhp more than my tuned Vrs and he can't overtake me when we are rolling above 30mph.:D

VAG have had their share of problematic units.  1.4TSi twin charger probably the most known, but original 1.2TSi, 2.0TDi PD, original 1.8 & 2.0TSi  and not forgetting the problems with the new diesels in the Mk3.

Do we go a week without someone starting a coolant issue thread?

The 1.9 pd had it's issues too with injectors wearing into head. And gearboxes on previous versions

We had it 4 days, 200 miles and it cost me £6,000. I liked it but SWMBO wouldn't drive either Vrs245 so had no choice. Going to remap her Karoq now to try eliminate the 1st gear jerkiness.:D

Feel the pain. History now
