Headlamp tilting system

Featured Replies

OK, so my Felicia's hydraulic headlamp tilting device doesn't work and looking under the bonnet I see fluid weeping from the end of the left-hand pipe. Can't see any more leaks. If this is the only leak is it possible to refill/top-up the system? I realise it is also possible that the light units could be seized and this will be investigated.

Thanks.

In theory it is possible, after all it had to be filled somehow.

The only problem is we don't have a reliable guide for doing it. All I can tell is you need new silicone hoses (old ones are stiff and crack) and a clever way to fill it with antifreeze solution without leaving any air inside.

Thanks Ricardo

Submerge the whole thing in antifreeze maybe.

Or use vacuum.

Thanks, all suggestions are worth considering.

I've read a few posts on here about this but I'm still not clear on the legal standpoint. I understand that if an internal adjustment control is fitted then it has to work for the MOT.

If there are any UK MOT  testers on here can you please tell me if it would be a fail if the whole system was removed and the lights adjusted manually under the bonnet?

I've considered the electrical system (and may yet have to go that way) available from the Czech site but the price works out at about £100.

Until an MOT inspector will answer your question, here is my 2 cents.

Felicia has fitted from factory a headlight tilting mechanism (HTM) that is operated from the cabin in 3 steps (0=no load, 1=half load, 2=full load).

IMHO to pass MOT there are 3 levels of acceptance:

  • maximum acceptable is to have a working OEM HTM
  • minimum acceptable is to use an equivalent system that operates identical to OEM but using other means. That is same command switch in 3 steps from the cabin, same tilt angle for each step.
  • not acceptable if none of the above are used

Thanks Ricardo. Put that way what you say makes sense.

It looks like I'll have to go the electric adjuster route but this https://www.specialnielektronika.cz/Elektricke-naklapeni-svetel-FEL-d11_1021879866.htm

converts to about 100GBP so I was wondering if anyone knows of a cheaper source?

Also, the fitting instructions are in Czech.

Get someone to translate them.

I bet that someone in this forum would be willing to help you.

I would first try to repair the system.

Or just remove the system completely and use a blanking plate.

Then say to them it didn't come fitted with one.

They won't know much bout the car so they will say OK.

Yeah, sure, there is only one Felicia doing the MOT in the UK...

Here it would work.
