Hybrid phone holder solution... Brodit + Magnets?

Featured Replies

I've been trying to sort out a solution for holding my phone in the car as a short term fix that saves me £££ on replacing the head unit etc.

I was looking at the Brodit ones but seemed excessively expensive and look pretty clunky when the phone isn't in it.  As a result started off with a Syncwire magnetic holder (£7) that goes in the vents - looks ok but the vents are so flimsy there was a fair bit of movement and don't want to snap the blades on it, so exchanged for a Syncwire magnetic one (£10) and stuck it on the dashboard between the vents and fascia.  Looked great, no movement - then went over a massive pothole and it fell off (presumably because the dash trim is a bit spongy and patterned rather than a nice clean fix.

My new idea is to buy the Brodit ProClip (£17) and then attach a magnet to the new flat surface (either a Syncwire one, or just adhesive magnets) as I have already put a metal plate in the back of my phone cover.

Has anyone done this? There's a lot of self adhesive magnets about so not sure where to start! Either that or I just bite the bullet and get the big clunky Brodit adjustable holder and look like an off duty Uber driver.

Have you thought of a windscreen one from taotronics. Sticks really well.

I'm not really a fan of windscreen mounted ones, It needs to be in the centre so I can hook up to USB and aux cable without wires everywhere.

I personally have a brodit with the move clip attached, then have a phone holder for my phone. The mrs has one for hers, parents for theirs etc. We just slip them in and out as required.

Using a generic and adjustable holder is better than bespoke in terms of adjustment if you get a new phone (I have a new phone, it has a case so got the generic holder).

Yes it was expensive but it seems sturdy and hasn't fallen off.

The Mrs' fabia clip has snapped off before but they sent a replacment without hassle.

Hesitant to use magnets as it might screw with navigational things e.g. compass, accellerometer.

Just one more thing @CooperDJ bear in mind that the position of the mount may impact your ability to get CDs in and out of the standard head unit.

Yeah that's fine I've got no intention of using CDs in the car

Don't think the magnets will be strong enough to do that but I think i'm going to go for the Brodit proclip anyway as a starter and then if i can't get anything else to work i'll have to get the phone grip from them too.

I posted this in another thread;

Fitted the pro clip today, really happy with how it looks with the syncwire magnetic holder. Feels solid too, we shall see how good the glue is now it's on a proper surface!
