DSG - Park not locking gear box

Featured Replies

After some opinion / advice please.

On the 16th Sept my Octavia went in to the dealer to replace the gear linkage mechanism on the DSG box.  Reason for this was I was getting a random message appearing “Error workshop only leave vehicle if selector leaver is in position P” on the dash at various times. I  Went away on holiday came back this week and found when the car is in park it’s not locking the gear box.  Found this out after handbrake slipped and car rolled back while in park.  Basically if the car is in park and rolls under it’s on steam i here a click, click, click coming from the gear selector area.

Issue is the car went out of warranty on the 30th Sept, and my feeling is this is linked to what they did or didn’t do on the 16th.

Whats your views(s) chuck it back at the dealer and try to get it sorted under the warranty or under the warranty for what they did on the 16th?

Thanks all

Whats your views

Have a read of THIS thread, couple of causes suggested there.

I would be back at the dealer, all ways 'just' out of warranty and only just serviced. Start by being nice though

Thanks.  It was in the dealer on the 16th, full 3rd year service, haldex fluid change, MOT. It cost me a arm and a leg. 😩

I wouldn't think you'll have a cat in hells chance of getting them to admit that the repairs they carried out earlier are anything to do with the issue you have now however closely related.

However as you are only just outside warranty and have had the car serviced/MOT'd with them, I would think you'll have a good chance of a gesture of goodwill on the fault.

Good luck anyway.

I parked mine on a slipway the other day with the handbrake on and the gear selector in park and it still rolled back. I had to pull the handbrake harder and chock the wheels. Is it meant to lock, or will it still roll on a steep enough gradient?

It is supposed to lock in P. Read the link above

When in the gear selector is in park a cable pulls a ‘Paw’ within the gear box which locks the transmission.  The transmission lock isn’t meant to replace the handbrake but my understand it’s still a very robust mechanism to stop the car rolling if the handbrake fails

I've had my gear selector mechanism replaced due to the usual "error, leave in P". If it's a cable, is there a possibility that it's not been connected or adjsuted properly?

I'll need to test it again. I didn't let it roll back and chocked the car mainly because i was standing behind it and didn't want to get run over. I'll park on a steep hill without the handbrake (whilst in the car) and test it...

I am hoping mine is cable related.  I can’t see how the paw could fail in the gearbox on a 3 year old car (25k miles) which when parked is on flatish ground with the handbrake on. 😳

Just tested it on the small incline of my drive and if I leave in P, with the engine off and release the handbrake, it rolls back until I press the brake. So it's definiately not working!

Does it make a clicking sound while its rolling back / forwards?

That does sound very plausible.

So I ran it up to my local dealer today and they took one look and said "oh, that's not good. Never seen that before". Straight in to the workshop and up on the ramp. They said they think its the cable as they've tried adjusting it and nothing. They suspect the cable is broken and are going to replace it next friday. So we'll see how serious it gets and if I need another warranty claim. I suspect they buggered it up when replacing my selector mechanism for the "error, leave in P" message, but we'll see. Either way, it shouldn't cost me other than hassle...

Just tested mine and it's doing the same. 5 days warranty left. For goodness sake this car has so many issues it is becoming ridiculous. Maybe I'll extend the warranty or look to change it

Sadly my Mk3 was the same. I sold it before the warranty expired.

I'm dissapointed with Skoda's reliability. They were at the top of their game with the mk2 cars. So reliable that every taxi driver had them. But it's not looking as good for the mk3.

Anyway, just out of interest, did you ever have the "service error, leave in P" or whatever it is? A few people have now said they've had the error, had their gear selector mechanism changed and also have no parking lock. Another one would make me smell a connection...   :)

Looks like both things have happened to Sergiu1983.  Also I think my car may be affected, and will check the parking later.

Yep it had the error message and was fixed under warranty earlier this year. I'm at a Skoda garage now having an oil & filter change so asked them to look at the problem as it's within 5 days of used car warranty. Not got anyone here today to carry out a diagnostic which is a shame. Will need to re book but at least it's logged within the warranty period.

I have had so many issues in the first year, it does worry me to death what the future holds. I was hoping this would be a long term car 5+ years but it's not looking good

Yes I had the ‘workshop error, leave in P’ error and linkage replacement.

I had the error message, had the lever changed twice but no problem with the Park Pawl

I suspected that I had the park pawl problem, but checked it today and it was OK.  Sometimes I have felt a little bit of movement when parking, but I think that must just be the car settling down.  Seems to me this would be an easy problem to miss, as anyone using the handbrake whenever they parked would not be able to tell whether or not the pawl was working correctly, as the car would normally be held securely just by the handbrake.  At least that is the case in these parts where most parking is on level ground.

I am getting the leave in position P message occasionally, and have not had it fixed.

If I can't get this fixed within my used warranty, how worried should I be about paying to fix it myself?

Should I even bother?

No

Depends what this "warranty" entails.

You have your consumer rights also, so within 6 months of buying a car from a trader, the onus on them is to prove that fault wasn't present at time of purchase. Used "warrantys" are over and above your consumer rights.
