Powder coating wheels?

Featured Replies

Hi all!

I'm looking to spruce up my Rapid Spaceback with different colour wheels. I'm stuck between buying a set of VW-group ones similar to those already on the car in a different colour (as it won't affect the car insurance) or getting my existing ones powder-coated.

Is having wheels powder-coated worth the money/effort? Or do people recommend just buying a new set?

Thanks,

Powder coating is certainly cheaper for a similar condition wheel as most places that do the work will refurb them at the same time.  If you know a friendly powder coater that will simply strip and recolour then that would be a cheaper route but potentially not as durable (although better than a rattle can job).

One thing to bear in mind is the powder coater will need the wheels for a at least 24hrs so a second set of wheels might not be a bad idea.  Then maybe run the spare set as winter wheels?

The wheels on it have been re-conditioned before I bought it in Feb this year, so they're completely undamaged.

I've seen a few garages can offer you loan wheels whilst yours get coated, which will save the hassle of a second pair. For me, it'll be a storage issue as I don't have a garage and the shed is just big enough for 2 mountain bikes and a lawn mower!

Straight forward powder coat is not as durable as the finish wheels gets from factory which is likely what has been done to your wheels on reburb.  It's usually a form of powder coat but with primer, colour and clear coat rather than just colour from a boggo paint shop. again it depends on how much you want to spend and what you have locally.
