I bought ,as recommended by a lot of people on here , the  Varta Silver E44 Heavy Duty Car Battery 77AH SIZE 096. Good battery with a 5 year guarantee . I had the same slow cold cranking symptoms as you but the new battery didn't cure it .

My roomster was slow to crank on cold mornings but started normally for the rest of the day. As a starting point and having just got the car i changed the battery but symptoms were still the same, but the mild winter we had last year didn't really make it a big issue so thats where its been left. Some have said try doing the glow plug light twice or waiting a few more seconds when the glow plug light goes out before trying to start it up ,which did seem to help a bit, but i cant be sure as its only just started to be frosty on a couple of mornings.

Thanks Jeff - will try that - appreciated. Have not jump started it yet and wondering about how easy to get to the +ve terminal with all that plastic gubbins on top. Seems like a jigsaw puzzle to get that lot off to change the battery.

Brilliant - very helpful - thanks Jeff. I don't have the radio code for my 'dance' radio that's fitted - will it lock me out if I change batteries do you know?

Yes mate,i had to put my code back in my radio

Jeff have you got a replacement radio or original ?    If original the radio code is all stored and there is no need to reenter it, it is stored in ECU or Dash - I'm not sure which.  I went though about 4 batteries on my Roomster over the years and never had to reenter the Dance radio code. IIRC It quickly flashes up CODE on first power up following a battery change but then that disappears quickly and comes on as normal.

Although if you are worried about the radio code at all just keep a 12v feed connected while changing the battery. There are cigarette socket devices that can do that.

Nice to hear from you again Aubrey .

It was a year ago that i changed the battery and i didnt want to tell Mike wrong so erred on the side of caution. I remember doing something with the radio code but i might just have been making sure i had it wrote down before the battery change . This old age sure is a bugga on the memory :)

How you getting on with your Yeti ?

The Yeti is good. No problems with it at all.  Compared to the Roomster it has bigger cabin space for people but a smaller hatchback space for luggage. I have the Yeti spare wheel which takes a bit of extra room and I can only fit 3 bags of shopping in the back, so I'm often using the back seats too, something I never had to do with the Roomster.

Starter can cause similar problems, changed battery on ours to no avail. Changed starter and cured problem. Starter was stiff to turn by hand when off the car upto the new one.

Thanks Aubrey for the insight

Thank you mpm  - did you change the starter yourself?  Tricky? Straightforward? Cheers

Yes. I changed it myself. Quite easy, three bolts and two electric if I remember rightly. Just a bit awkward from underneath on a drive.

Not sure if it's possible to buy to big a battery, as in AH and CCA not physical size, as my Octavia battery died a few weeks ago when down at my sons and over 200 miles from home ....

Halfords and a few others listed I believe now it was either the Yuasa 010 or 100 at 77AH and 680CCA but I was always lead to believe the correct battery type was the 096 range so I opted for the Yuasa 096 at 80AH and 760 CCA for a tad over £94 supplied and fitted and it's been great so far

  • 3 weeks later...

Yesterday I replaced my battery. It was the factory fitted one (2010). After the replacement the factory fitted BLUES radio unit popped up the word SAFE for a couple of seconds and then turned into LEARNING for another couple of seconds. Then everything worked fine without the need of entering the code. So I guess that if you don't replace your original head unit with another one, then no code is needed as it is stored somewhere in one of the electronic memories of the car.

My factory fitted battery was a 44Ah - 320EN Varta battery and now I fitted a 62Ah - 540EN Exide Excell. I bet the new one will not last the half years of the initial one.

Ha, I bet it will being that size!

When I was a young person(?) in UK at least Exide was seen as being a quality/trustworthy supplier of car batteries - in fact my older daughter's late 2009 Ibiza came new with an Exide battery - and that was replaced in 2017(maybe) due to that car liking/choosing to discharge its battery due to a BCM S/W issue which I got fixed eventually. Nowadays when we buy our Germanic sort of cars we mainly see Varta and Bosch as being the battery brand of choice if possible - so maybe Exide, well the Excell range/option are okay and equals to Varta/Bosch - for you time will tell!

Here in Greece Exide are right after Bosch, Varta and Yuasa, meaning that they are well respected as well. I think that BMW uses them as factory fitted batteries nowadays.

I tend to believe that factory fitted batteries are long lasting because they get fitted shorty after they produced while the same batteries may be at the shops' shelves for quite a time, but as I am not a battery specialist this is just an assumption of mine.

Yes I'd agree with that, some UK based car parts sellers tend to sell of their old stock just before winter arrives.

OP- month or so back ECP had an offer that if you signed up for newsletter you would get a special discount on first purchase. Battery for mine ( cheapo)  dropped from circa  £70 TO CIRCA £40 if you signed up for newsletters . I'd use a disposable address though ( stops tons of spam).

Stratosg - I'm still using ( touch wood ) an old 096 I replaced about eight years ago. Second battery in my 04 model.

Yup, that was the one I was hinting at - I even saw the selection of batteries when I went to collect something that was genuinely going at a reasonable price.
