Frozen II

Featured Replies

One issue I had with my Ocativa last year was whenever there was a frost, the doors were hard to open. A few solutions were put forward but I never had a chance to test them. Two days ago the same happened so on Sunday I used silicon spray on to a cloth and polished the rubbers on the door as well as the door seals.

Just went out to the car this morning after a particularly heavy frost. Had to tug the door handle a little but hey presto, the door opened without issue - very pleased. Went to the other door, the handle is frozen solid! Have tried tugging a few times but to be honest the whole mechanism feels brittle and I'm scared it'll break if I pull too hard. ( I've never experienced this on a VW however I was reprimanded by someone last year calling me anti-Skoda because VW use the exact same mechanism using same parts. That may be true but neither of my Golfs felt so flimsy, nor did I need to introduce silicon spray ).

Have handles frozen on other folks cars? What do you do to release it?

I've read a few posts from folk in Sweden / Norway talking about pre-heaters and heated windscreen wipers and other such devices we don't have here in the UK, but just wondering their solution? Having such options is all well and good but if you can't get in to the car in the first place...  :D

I've heard of heated washers but not wipers.

Having worked for Disney for the last 3 years you might have infringed on Copyright rules for your thread title by using the title of the new Disney film Frozen 2 the follow up to the original from 6 years ago.:tongueout:

If you have a parking place / driveway and an outdoor plug point / EV charger & wind deflectors to be able to leave the window open a little a Green House heater in the car set at a couple of degrees above freezing when when parked keeps the glass inside and out frost free, the locks / handles working and uses very little electricity.

I'll think you'll find " Let it Go " is a song from Frozen.     Quite a  funny reply actually,

Just to emphasise the second part I reckon.

Admit it. You've been caught, hook, line and sinker! ;)

No, that was for dramatic emphasis 😊

Though I'm sure that's what most parents now prefix the lyrics with, after hearing the song for the thousandth time

This is a joke right?

No this is Scotland.

If you ever have a Van, Camper, Caravan etc and you have after day of freezing temps then you use your common sense.

If you have Tools / Batteries / power packs etc to charge you might well use an extension cable to a vehicle, or have a fixed power inlet and sockets.

When i was young Lorry & Tractor Drivers still lit fires fires under the engines in the morning, and other put Oil Filled Green House Heaters under the sump.

^^^Yep. Grandfather used to drive lorries back in the 50s and 60s and it was very common practice. Some even had bespoke shallow metal trays that could be filled with diesel and lit under the engine and gearbox to thaw things out. It's not unheard of for brittle castings like gearboxs to shatter when frozen (or the workings inside are to be specific). Also have quite few times taken the air cleaner of an old diesel engine and held a gas torch in the intake to pre warm the air to aid starting.

Sod having a fan heater in my car overnight.   Those things are prone to catching fire (we recently had one catch fire at work in fact).  There's no way I'd leave one unattended for any period of time, let alone leave it in my car overnight.

I'd rather just pour some luke warm water over my handle and screen in the morning and put my heaters/heated seats on.  Doesn't take long to warm up.

@Alex-W Did you read the OP, and the reason for this thread?

Location location location.

Not many outdoor Ski Centres or Winter Sports happening in Hampshire

Cars are prone to catch fire when people pour warm water on the windscreen and it freezes in the air intakes.

There are not many Greenhouse fires i know of, and i have not set a vehicle on fire in the past 30 years.

If you pour water day after day when the temp is at and around freezing Skoda doors freeze full of water.

Locks freeze, parking places around cars freeze and the cars heater / demister vents are full of ice.

2010 around Scotland there were places that never got above freezing for 5 weeks in a row.

There are areas that get 5-7 weeks cold weather payment because of 7 days temps at freezing as an average.

Not many Cold Weather payments made in the South of the UK.
