Took the car off the driveway this morning and there was a loud bang from the front passenger side.

AA arrived (awfully nice man!!!!) and the front spring, near side front has broken.

Contacted Euro carparts, only do the rear ones and GSF don't do them either.

Really strange!!!

On the Octavia there are 42 different springs to choose from.

They are the same as other models.

But as the whole of the parts dept for the AVG group are based together , if they are not available for the Skoda it will be the same for the rst of the gruop.

It's good practice to replace both at the same time anyway.

I know you probably hadn't budgeted for it to happen but as your car is 2001 it may also be worth considering replacing the front shock absorbers and top bearings too. The labour cost should be the same for the spring and shock absorber as it is for the spring alone. Genuine shock absorbers will be around £60 each and the top bearing around £5 each.

Just thinking of preventative rather than reactive maintenance and saving money in the long term.

Mmmm, mine (2001 110TDi estate) seems be a bit clonky at the front when going over speed bumps and things. Maybe I need to consider a change as well.

I had to replace the shocks on the GF's felicia and that was a nightmare. Mr Haynes said remove hub clamp bolt..... he meant to say: drill, heat, angle grind, swear, beat with hammer for 2 days, snap titanium drill bit and use hacksaw...

Hmm, scary moment here. After speaking to piv34uk, I suspect I may have the same problem today. Was driving on the A41 at a leisurely 70mph this morning when there was this almighty bang coming from somwhere underneath the engine which I could feel in the steering wheel. I checked my mirrors to see if anything had been on the road, but didnt see anything, so I put it down to a rock bouncing off the lower strut brace. Then at the end of my 60 mile journey I went to get some cash out of a machine and when I reversed out of my parking space there was the sound of a spring 'springing'. Not knowing any mechanics I stepped out of the car and went to look underneath it to see if it happened to be the strut brace that had come undone, but nothing to see. Did a few full lock turns at slow speed and although the noise was there occasionally it did it on both sides, leaving me all puzzled. Had it on a jack at lunchtime and had a feel around the wheelarches on both sides, but again, did not spot anything so resorted to my last hope... the mechanics

I just hope it doesnt break down on my way to the garage this afternoon to see what is wrong with it (speaking to Phil, he reckons it can be the spring(s) which has snapped). Car is a Octy RS on a '51 plate, with 115k on the clock.

Put it on the bridge at Phil's and sure enough, the top part of the driver side front (NSF? OSF? Never been able to tell which is which) spring was broken off. Got the broken off piece as a souvenir on my desk at the moment :(

Now to decide how to resolve... New springs, new springs+dampers, used springs+dampers, eibach springs, kw's... the list goes on

Either way it's gonna cost you!!! :P

i'm running a 99 Octy TDI 90 thats done 80k.

Car is totally standard except ...

just had some AVO adjustable dampers fitted.

the handling is much better, however,

the noise on pot-holed back roads (or city ones too)

is much worse than expected

on the motorway or smooth a road,

ride is as quiet as before

swmbo commented at the weekend on a scenic drive,

is there something wrong with the car its much noisier

any thoughts? other than turning the stereo up?

This seems to be a fairly common fault :(

I remember Honest John writing about it some six months ago (which coincided with another batch on this site!).

Yup...looks familiar to me too...'01 vRS with 70k on the clock. Mine went a few weeks back going over a speedbump at no more than 10mph. Looks like yours snapped almost exactly the same place as mine (also got the souvenir!).

My garage had a few hassles getting replacements as well. Just a bit gutted I didn't consider getting the shocks done at the same time now I've read this thread :(

I had a similar problem with an original Passat years ago. After paying to have the springs replaced, I found out that VW were aware of the problem and had been replacing the springs FOC for those who complained to them.

I must say I would be tempted to give Skoda a call, there is plenty of evidence on here of serial failures.

bit of an update

a mate has taken the car for a spin this evening

he's concluded that ...

(i) back left is noisiest

(ii) then front left

(iii) each corner of the car has been set differently

(iv) my trackings out (pulls to left)

a trip back to garage tomoro

My Octavia 4x4 1.8 Estate is in the garage awaiting rear spring delivery tomorrow. I miss it already!!!!!!

Well - here I am waiting for a rear spring. Apparently none available but on back order - will take approx 1 week. :confused:

I could honestly say it was mine,

Is there a problem with them OR is it just a case that our roads are just getting worse, not getting repaired and then we have the dreaded sleeping policemen.

Anyway, it just costs us motorists money, ALL THE TIME:eek:
