My Wax just won't shine!!!!

Featured Replies

Well, not like others' anyway!!!!

When I see other people's pics of their freshly washed n waxed cars they're shining beyond belief. Mine just don't seem to have the same effect.

All my products are Meguiars bits. I use their shampoo and their wax (tech wax maybe?)that you spray on.

The only thing I'm not sure of is how long to leave it before wiping off. The instructions are really vague. Does anybody have any experience with this product at getting really good results??? can you give me any tips please???

Many thanks!!!

i find that megs products are typically difficult to use (apply + remove) best i can sugest is try a couple of techniques#

1st try applying a small amount wiping it ollowing the panel lines, this should be microscopiclly thin just enough to haze an dleave to dry. then using a buffing cloth (microfibre, terry towel) wipe it away turn to a dry piece of cloth for the final wipe. use a quick detailer spray if it wont remove to soften it.

second start in the same way but buff imediatly

failing these two methods

preperation: you cant get a dull surface to shine. look closely if you can see fine scratches ar the paintwork is dull then get the cleaner and polish out and build yourself a nice surface to work on!

a few pics might help you explain your problem (pic is worth 1000 words)

hope you have some success.

It might be that the paint needs conditioning. All the wax will do is seal in the shine. How old is the car?

I've always found Megs products quite easy to use, to achieve a good standard of finish. If it were me, I would wash the car as normal, then clay bar it, apply a polish (this is the stage where the shine will be created), THEN apply wax to protect the paintwork.

Steve

Interestingly the results have been similar on both my brand new fabia vrs and my old t reg civic. There's a fair degree of shine if you look for it, bit nowehre near compared to the standard of some other people's cars. It just doens't look as wet or glossy as some of the others.

Results of the Fabia's first wash can be viewed on this thread... http://www.briskoda.net/forums/fabia/gave-vrs-its-first-wash/50984/

I'm not sure whether I should be wiping the meguiars product straight off or leaving it for a while. Also, I don't know whether to be gnerous or to go really easy on the amount that I apply!!!

Thanks for the help guys!!!!

Interesting - I can't comment on the NXT wax and don't like the spray-on products personally. I use the Gold Class wax myself - applying to the whole car before removing. If the Gold Class is anything to go by, you should be applying enough to have a dull haze across the panel you're doing.

EDIT: Looking at your first pic on that thread, the wax doesn't look like it's been removed properly. I can see a haze on the driver's door for example. I would recommend a decent quality terry towel to remove the wax. What are you using at the moment?

Steve

I'm using something from Halfords that was sold as a "100% cotton cloth" I think. Is that rubbish then???

TBH I'm at a total loss with all this "dull haze" business. How can i find otu what one of them actually looks like?!?!?!

As you can see from the pics ... it's almost there but not quite.

Hang on ... fomr what you just said wardy... should i be adding and then removing from each individual pane before removing on then??? Therefore leaving the wax minimal time before removing????

Mind you, I can see the differnece between the driver's door and the rear panel (behind rear door) quite clearly!

That cloth should do the trick to be honest.

I'd read the waxing guide on Polished Bliss (a great site for technique, as well as products). It's a bit of read, but will hopefully help your understanding: http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk/acatalog/guides_protect.html

On the application, I'm not 100%, because it's a different product to the one I use. It should say on the back of the bottle though - some say do the whole car then remove, others say do one panel at a time. For the Meguiars Gold Class wax I use it's the former, but it might be different for the NXT stuff.

I've read that guide thanks mate.

I'm gonna have another close read of the bottle before having another go on the vrs tomorrow.

Just out of interest... that bit you saw on my driver's door, that would mean the wax wasn't removed proper;y right!?!?!!?!?

Yeah, it would seem to me that it hasn't all been removed. So you're left with those streak marks.

Steve

If its a dark you may find cleaning it then using Klasse all in one should help bring back the shine, then wax on top of that ( Same stuff as Carlak 68 but cheaper)

Again you can get it on www.polishedbliss.co.uk

I use Swissol wax and leave it on for around 30 minutes before buffing....always gives good results.

I find old cotton T-shirts are better than those Halfords cloths.

I wonder if your car was waxed with another product before, sotonjoe, and the two products are reacting. Might be worth stripping it all off with a clay bar next time and starting with a clean surface. Forgive me if you've already done that and I missed it.

Swissol. Nothing better!!

Did mine this morning as the sun was shining.

This is a possibility I guess.

The car is only a couple of weeks old and it would have been freshly waxed when I collected it.

Is it a nightmare to start using clay bars though!?!?!?!

They come from the factory protected with some sort of gunk, which the dealer then has to strip off as part of the pre-delivery preparation. They would probably employ a valeter who would then wax the car with the product of his choice - very possibly different from yours. It's possible you could remove the wax with a solvent rather than a clay bar - like you say - seems like overkill maybe for a nearly new car. Others more expert than I may be able to suggest suitable products.

try some megs step 1 paint cleaner then polish and seal or as suggested before Klasse AIO this is a cleaner, polish and sealent in one and should last up to 5months.

apply it twice first to remove and clean the surface and the second to add more sealant.

As suggested by some experts in the field try things and see what YOU like.

ie tye a couple of ways and see what works best for you

Like everything, PREPARATION is the key.

After washing the car, you need to remove any old wax/polish that was there before, I used Meguiars Body scrub for this (as recommended on their website). Do one panel at a time, apply the body scrub, then remove with a microfibre cloth (Costco did a pack of 20 for about

Meguiars Body Scrub was recommended via their website to use, but I agree it is NOT there for sale, but when I went to the local supplier (as on their website) they had it in stick.

I know there is also a 3 step process they recommend and I wonder whether their 1st step is the same, give it a try.

Just as a note, I went to my dad's today (who has a Daewoo Lania - awful car) which hadn't seen a proper polish or wax I would say for at least 2 years, I used the body scrub and the cleaner wax and it came up really great.

However, there were 1 or 2 parts of the bodywork, i.e. top of the bonnet near the windscreen and part of the right wing, that was still not smooth to touch after applying the body scrub, I think a more adbrasive solution may be needed, BUT as it was only a Daewoo, I wasn't too bothered.

My dad was well chuffed with the result, the best it's looked for years my dad said.

I would recommed that once you have waxed it, to use on a weekly basis, one of the Meguiars shampoos using a mitt and say once a month re applying the wax.

I find that washing the car is a lot easier now after using the meguiars wax.

Hope everything goes OK.

cheers for that! I'll let you know how I get on

Had another polish today. No sun, so pics aren' that impressive, but the results are much better to my own eye.

Left it on for 45mins- 1 hour before removing.

Looks good mate, decent depth of shine and some nice reflections

Don't know if I'd have left it on that long TBH, wasn't it really hard to remove? With the Meg's Gold Class Wax I use, it's only on for the length of time it takes me to apply it to the whole car....

Steve

Looks good. Heres mine using Swissol wax and Turtle Wax Top Coat Sealer:
