Looking for a different car.

I'm wondering if I can put up with this until the new model arrives and they accept it as a trade in, with a bit of leverage from SUK customer service?

Mk4 Octavia is 610litres in hatch back form, had a 72 hour test drive in a 280 sport line Superb, seriously didn't like the handling although, I have to confess, it's a fast armchair   But,

  • I really do understand your frustration @TheWanderer . Before coming to a Skoda last year, I’d had loads of different cars over the years.   Having had JLR products for the last 5 pre Skoda

  • I’m ultimately having the same issue due to different circumstance (my lease is ending). The vRS for me isn’t excellent at anything. But it’s very good at everything.

S90 to same as RS = £47,900!

Besides it's an old mans car.

In fairness though an S90 is a couple of classes above an Octavia.

The S60 is probably a better equivalent (but is still more of a Superb rival IMO) and available for £31,000 in T5 R Design spec.

My over riding point though is ignore list price, its a complete nonsense, nobody buys cars for list prices.

The question is how I fund it as the car is on a PCP, so I'm going to have to try and find a massive deposit out of my own pocket to fund the next one.

When exactly did you collect the RS?

Had a look at a Jaguar E pace, not sure about the looks, need to have a proper look at one.

Had one as a hire car last year, the 240bhp diesel.

I wouldn't bother.  Big on the outside, or at least feels it to drive.  Small on the inside.

Didn't feel like 240bhp, I guess it's quite lardy.  Nothing overly impressive about the interior, in fact there's an annoying bit of the dash that sticks out and serves no purpose.

Two of us shared the driving and both were quite underwhelmed and disappointed.  I'd genuinely rather drive my Octavia (in fact, I do now drive it and claim the miles rather than get a hire car as I was getting annoyed with getting cars I don't like such as a Disco, the E-Pace, a bloody big Nissan SUV, Passat Diesel).

If you can put up with it might pay you to hang on another 12 months for the Mk4 RS even a hybrid 1.4TSI version with 242bhp and 30 miles electric range or the full fat 2.0TSi with whatever VW allow them power wise. Back in August 2019 bought brand new Vrs245 for the wife with DSG and she made me return it after 4 days and 200 miles only, showroom sticker price was £28,700 with a few nice options and lost me depreciation of £6,000 in 4 days, Some lucky chap saw it on here and paid £22,500 for the same car knowing it hadn't been thrashed and there was a genuine (fault free) reason for it's return. What annoyed me the most it had a spare wheel, heated windscreen and blind spot monitoring all 3 missing from wife's beloved Karoq SEL which she made me buy back.

TBH, I wouldn't touch any JLR.  My next door neighbour is a massive fanbois and the XE and F-Pace he's had over the last few years have all been problematic.  He's had JLR assist at his house more times than I can remember.  Even the courtesy Velar he was given whilst his F-Paces electrical issues were sorted broke down.  An acquaintance is a tech docs writer for the JLR production line and he said that they are shockingly unreliable.

From the VW stable I think only the Arteon, Pasat R-Line Edition or Superb 272's would suit but I believe the Passat can't be spec'd with a heated windscreen.  Some good prices on pre-reg ones though and IMO they look very nice:

You then have the Golf R, GTI PP, GTI TCR, Cupras and such but none of which can be spec'd with a heated screen.  The CUPRA R ST with ABT pack looks a good package. It's a shame that the Focus ST Estate only comes in manual form but I believe an 8 spd auto version will be released soon (I thought it was already but configurator says otherwise), that would tick all the options.

You are correct, no heated screen available, and these are only available from stock - I should know. 😁

I do miss the one on my Octavia, but it's a small price to pay overall, it heats up fairly quick anyway. I've also just changed my Ranger to an Amarok, and again lost the heated screen!

How are you finding it overall?  I must say I do find myself looking at them a fair bit on AutoTrader.  It's a sad day when a Passat can make a Superb look boring 😂

Speak for yourself my 272 Sportline Plus looks very sexy in Black Magic Pearl. Must be the primer grey paint with the low winter sunshine. I find the heater is much better on the Superb compared to my Vrs245 which also hadn't got the heated windscreen, so much so that I haven't had to scrape the ice off yet just put the blower on even when it was -2C over the weekend.

Just had a look at a Karoq Sportline. It won't be a nutty thing like the RS is but, has everything that the RS has just in a SUV format.

Apparently they go quite well with the 2.0TSi 190PS petrol engine and DSG and 4WD should help from the lights, probably low 7's to 60mph and possible heated screen.

Our Karoq only has the 150PS 1.5TSi engine and does 0-60mph in 8.6 seconds yet averages 45mpg and to be honest it handles better than I was expecting and there is only a bit of roll/understeer in tight/slow roundabouts but on country lanes it surprisingly good, probably best in class for handling and the high up seating position is great in traffic for seeing over all those pheasants in small hatchbacks (joking).

I double read that I thought that you had said peasants in their hatchbacks! 😂

Better to hit a Pheasant in a Karoq than a Citygo. But probably the other way round for a peasant.

Yeah, lovin' it. I'vs debadged the rear - hate that P A S S A T badging. It's pretty subtle too - no one really knows what it is. Rides very well after the Octavia, and handles pretty well for it's size. The steering isn't the last word in feel, but there's not much that is these days!

The Mrs left her keys inside the other day and I locked it (didn't think the car would lock with them inside with KESSY) and messaged me at work the next day...opened the car via the WeConnect app - what a lifesaver 😂

Mazda?

The OP does have a very specific list but sometimes a change is good. I love my VRS but inwill be changing soon. I have a test drive booked for this Thursday in a BMW 530e. Something different, RWD, bit more poke, different class of car all together and saves me loads on company car tax!!

Mini 5dr hatch Cooper S?

Or even the countryman?

A friend has the countryman cooper S 4wd as a family friendly second car and thinks it's pretty decent.

Having come from a Niro PHEV (not recommending it as an answer to the thread!!!), I am very disappointed with the government's current stance on PHEVs. Stating as one reason for the removal of the plug in grant was that many company cars were returned with their cables still sealed in the bags (perhaps like us the said users had a tethered charger), but still allow the extremely preferable BIK rates is a shot in the foot for the private user who generally would plug the car in and use it as intended.
