bang then couple of knock in the engine.

Featured Replies

hi guys

setting off from work few days ago, there was a loud bang so i pulled over to have a quick look around but couldnt see anything bad/wrong. at first i thought it was a tyre that blew up but no it wasnt. then got closer to home, there was couple of knocks, as soon as i got home, i checked my oil and it was at minimum mark, i topped it up straight away.

question is: have i broke my engine?

it runs fine still.

cheers guys

  • Judicious use of a mirror and feeling with fingers should do the job.

  • Good shout.  First suspect would be one of the front springs, I reckon. Have a look at both, looking for bits broken off top or bottom.

  • Diagnose before shopping.  Bust spring was just one possibility.

1.2 70bhp

@froggy8

?

How long ago, or how many miles ago do you know there was the right quantity of oil in the car. So when was it checked or serviced?

?

How many miles has the engine done?

i cant really remember the las time i checked to be honest, it was full last time i checked though.  i think it was before i went to cornwall which is end of december.

the engine has only done 68k.

Best keep fingers crossed then.

?

Maybe an oil and filter change would be in order.

i was so scared i might have broke the engine, i have never heard the sound of low oil before.

i have already done a full service on September though.

Does your engine only take 2.8 litres of oil?

if so being low means not much oil in it.

Only the 1.2 44 Kw engine is supposed to have the Oil checked when cold, all the others should be checked at Operating temp.  So high enough then.

Obviously you should know where that mark will be when cold so you can check before driving.

according to that chart, yes my car only takes 2.8 litres. i wasnt sure myself.

when cold, its on max mark.

Only the 44Kw 1.2 should be on the Max mark when cold.  Your 51Kw / 70 ps should be there at operating temperature.

If it runs fine then any broken engine component would make it sound sick. Could the sound have been from another exterior source? That chart shows my engine taking 3.9 litres - not 3.6 litres. I thought I have been overcharged for oil when serviced.

oops sorry, i did check about half hour after i stopped driving so it will still be hot.

it could be a bottle or something that i ran over that might have caused the bang but it scared me right up.

The point is have enough oil, especially with such a low capacity.

The 'Warm' in that Owners manual was a Skoda error.   VW, SEAT & Audi said Hot or at Normal Operating temp.

So many cars leave workshops from a service because a fitter, tech or mechanic warms the engine and oil.

If it is at operating temp for an oil check that is going to be above 80*oC, and better near 90*oC.     Especially with low capacity sumps.

Then when you know where the oil is after stopping a few minutes. (VW do not say many minutes, or 5 or 10 or 30)

you can know when the oil cools and all drains to the sump where that shows.

Crap system really.  I never designed it, just made sure i understood it.  Pity VW Factory trained techs never bothered.

If it was setting off you might have had a sticky hand brake and it was just realising

  • Author

it was a big bang like a bottle pooped or something like that.

i will look into my engine bay later to see if anything is broke.

@Wino could be 'bang' on with the spring.

I had one go outside my house on a 4x4 and it was like an explosion.

OT,  but i had a car in for a Service plan service and MOT with ARNOLD CLARK this week.

It drove just fine and 18 months ago failed on a 'fractured or broken front spring', passed a retest the same day.

then passed a MOT 12 months ago. I bought it just after it was MOT'd last year.

New Discs and Pads on last year before i bought the car.

They do a service this year and advise a brake fluid change. Service does not include dealing with binding brakes.

And they can not test the brake fluid, they have no tester....

This time failed on a broken spring.  Same side and position.

so im guessing i will need to order some springs and try put them on?

No.

You need the car on a ramp and the springs extended and inspected.

  • Author

ok thanks, i will try do that at some point.

I would check the springs sooner rather than later. If one has broken it could get loose and puncture a tyre.
