bang then couple of knock in the engine.

I'm surprised that car has passed an MOT with the amount of rust on the springs. A common spot for spring failure is at the top. Unless you've jacked it up and removed the wheel to get a proper look it's difficult to be sure everything is ok.

  • Judicious use of a mirror and feeling with fingers should do the job.

  • Good shout.  First suspect would be one of the front springs, I reckon. Have a look at both, looking for bits broken off top or bottom.

  • Diagnose before shopping.  Bust spring was just one possibility.

I would agree with you about looking right up the top but the most you would get on an MOT for those is an advisory/minor. It's mostly muck and some surface rust.

thank you guys, i will try jack it up tomorrow and see if i can see anything.

I had this Fabia vRS on the ramp and still never spotted the bottom coil was broken until the spring was off.

so are you saying i should take teh spring off to see if its broken?

^^^^ That.

Not saying remove them, Just saying you need to get good light and sight line.

Your springs are longer than those, but you need to get them extended and really check them out.

I was not looking for a broken spring just going to replace them.

I had had a broken spring previously on the drivers side and heard it when reversing.

i might try that method with the mirror or what root just said about replacing the springs. they are bit rusty arent they? so make sense to replace them.

i was just thinking buying new shocks as mine are rusty. killing 2 stone with 1 bird as they say.

Shocks only need replacing if they leak or don't work properly. Rust is not a good reason for replacing really.

ok i will check them out tomorrow, lets say there was a broken spring but was driving fine. i would need to change them then wont i?

Yes, it's an mot fail and potentially dangerous. You will need to change the pair or you will have a lopsided car which won't handle well. You don't need to change the shocks because you are changing the springs.

thank you very much guys, will update  tomorrow :)

  • Author

hey guys, heres the update: the drivers side front spring, top of it has abit broke of it. To the people who suggested it was the springs i thank you! i would never have known.

problem is which springs do i go for?

  • Author

want to say thank you for everyone who has helped me, this forum is awesome! :)

Either should fit according to the sellers' info.

  • Author

thank you, wasn't sure if i needed to a get specific weight for them.

Are you doing the fitting yourself?

If not, just let the garage that does the job source them. Then you'll have some comeback if they fail prematurely. If you supply them, you'll struggle.

the engineer guy at work will be doing it, i was thinking about doing it myself but that means i would have to buy the decompressing device.

Does this not depend on how good your toolkit is currently, buying a pair of compressors is just the beginning, big socket for hub nut on one side, getting down to the strut top nuts while holding the piston etc etc, nothing is impossible when you are prepared for that task.

Good Luck!
