Mini USB ports, can you use an old iPod?

Featured Replies

I'm considering trading my old Octavia for a new one but I see the new cars have two mini usb ports and no aux input.  I have an old iPod Classic, can I use this with the mini USB ports via some sort of adaptor? Cheers

It might be time to put your music onto an SD card. ;)

Do the new systems still allow SD cards then? Where is the slot in the Bolero system or whatever it's called?

I'm presuming that the MK4 will have an SD card as I've not seen the specs yet. The slot is usually in the glovebox.

Music navigation would also then be integral to the car instead of how you presently use it.

Ah OK, thankyou!

I'm sure the Chinese at Wish, Alibarbar et al. have already got one in production 😉😉😉😉

Also they’re probably usb c not Usb mini

Why don't you just buy a USB C to USB type-A adapter?

There still wouldn't be any integration though.

Having a look at a Scala SE. This doesn't have SD capability at all.

Ah.

You've decided against the Octavia then!

Possibly. Not finally decided.

The new MIB3 radios are USB-C only it appears, the SD slot has also been dropped. This will be the case for all new VAG cars that come with these radios, including the Octavia. I have no idea if an old 30 pin iPod would work with an adapter, I can’t think of a reason why it wouldn’t but newer iPods with a lightening cable are cheap enough if you need to replace it.

OK thanks

It would probably be better to use a USB C SD Card reader plugged into one of the USB C ports. That way the head unit is reading the files directly from a simple storage device.

I don't know exactly how the interface to an iPod works - it may be that the head unit sees it as a virtual drive - but with mine it takes a certain amount of time to read it, whereas with an SD card it is pretty instantaneous.

The disadvantage with an SD card is that you can't simply take it out of the car and plug some headphones into it, but given how incredibly cheap SD cards are nowadays it is easy to justify the cost of dedicating one to the task of music in the car.

If they have deleted the SD Card slot I would imagine it is because they think that everyone will be using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto to play music directly from their phones, but I must say that personally I prefer being able to have a music store permanently in the car and ready to go with a specific selection of tracks that I like to play while driving, without having to search through what I have on the phone for something to play.

Yes, I agree. My phone hasn't got nearly as much capacity as my iPod so I think a big SD is the way to go for the best of both worlds, convenience, neatness, number of songs and, as you say, just leave it in the car. Good back for iTunes too!

I found my old iPods (full range still in drawer) stopped working in cars some time ago.

SD card works. So does Jukebox.

But recently I learned to cache my favourite Radio Paradise onto my phone with 3 different music mixes. ALAC quality so even my cloth ears can tell it sounds better. No more silly adverts or chat. Bliss.

ps - simple BT connection in car. No Apps for me.

No SD cards on anything?

Can I ask where that came from, because I could understand a columbus being so, but not anything lower where you want to bring the music over with you.

One thing just to add is that USB-C to USB-A adapters are readily available and work perfectly in my experience. I would still prefer to have an SD card slot, though!

Another option is either a USB-C memory stick or a USB-C SD card adapter.

I assume that if they have dropped the SD card slot it is because a USB connection is more flexible, and for the reasons I have just mentioned can do everything that an SD card slot would do for you.

So got my brand new Scala and happily using a USB flash drive plugged straight into the USB C socket. The Bolero reads the files and folders fine, which my old Octavia wouldn't do, and accepts Apple formats too like MP4, which the old Octavia wouldn't do either!

Please see below, this is an image showing the Preh MIB3 which is capable of running the 8, 9.2 and 10.1 inch screens and there are no slots or ports on the radio unit anymore.

Well that’s pretty rubbish...

Are both USB ports on the dash, or is one in the glove box, so that you can leave your USB stick permanently plugged in? There is no music on my phone.

In the Scala there are two usb c ports in the storage area behind the gear stick. Just got a USB stick plugged in permanently.
