Superb Spare Wheel Well

Featured Replies

I've just taken delivery of a 2019 Superb Estate and plan to replace the wheel repair kit with a spacesaver wheel. Does anyone have any advice for changing or modifying the plastic molding under the boot floor so that the spacesaver will fit ? Anyone had previous experience of this ? Any advice greatly appreciated.

Take a look on eBay. There’s often complete spare kits, incl tools and mouldings for £100-150

I've had a quick look but can't find anything yet. Will keep looking there and elsewhere. I've got a secondhand wheel ordered so it's really how to mount the thing in the wheel well that I'm looking at.

Can anyone who has a Superb Estate with a spacesaver spare take a photo of the spare wheel well, please, so that I can see what sort of moulding is actually supposed to be in there ?

Thanks

I had the exact same moulding, bought space saver secondhand of ebay and bought the tools from super Skoda they include mountings to secure wheel in place.

http://www.superskoda.com/scripts/hledej.php?rz=1&retezec=3V0093860A&x=43&y=9.

the old moulding is just removed

And does that support the boot floor ok ? is there not a big gab between the back of the bootlid and where the spare wheel starts ?

I'm just trying to picture it in my head. I should really take the old moulding out and look at it properly but it;s a real miserable evening here now and I'm not going out n the sleet ! I'll have a look tomorrow.

Thanks

I bought a 125/70/18 space saver as told that’s what’s fitted by Skoda and it fills the space,Sry I can’t show you a pic as ..well had a pothole blowout and had to use the spare as sidewall split.

The moulding for the jack and tools comes with a plastic screw fixing that clips into the wheel base to secure the wheel in place.

This is how it looks like in mine.

It has a 16" not-skinny spare tyre.

It's a 205/55/16 tyre.

Mine had the 19" as standard.

Boot floor is good. Sits flush on the spare tyre.

The tyre is held in place by large plastic lock nut that goes through hub.

The foam is strapped to the rim.

Wow , so the car sits right with this 16” spare?.

I’ve got my skinny fitted to front and tbh bit feared on right turn corners, might invest in this , thanks 😜👍🏻

@JR RS

That's perfect! Thank you so much for your reply.

I'm planning a drive to Germany later in the year and I don't fancy being stranded at the roadside without a spare wheel, so good to know a full size spare works too.

Tempted to get a full size alloy... But that may be a bit over the top.

I never put my spare tyre on the front.

If it's my front that's flat, I put the good rear one at the front, and place the spare on the rear, as shown in the pic.

I wouldn't put two different sized tyres on my front driving wheels.

Problem with a full size alloy is that it's a wider tyre. 235 vs 205.  That means it will sit an extra 3 cm higher in the wheel well, affecting the boot floor.

Ah yes, good point.

I should have notes that when you said the 205 was flush. Thanks

Advice taken and swapped front with rear 💪🏻😜👍🏻

I take it that the 205 was supplied as standard from factory?

I've got a 206kw (280 in uk parlance) MY19 and it came with one of the narrow spares.

Your tyres are 235/40-19's?

correct.

the 162kW (220) comes with the normal 205/55/16 spare tyre, if specc'ed (its standard fitment here in Oz).

the 206kW (280) comes with the skinny bicycle 17" spare tyre, again, if specc'ed.  two reasons for that, 1) AWD system compromises boot floor; 2) the 280 has bigger brakes, hence the 16" spare won't cut it.

yup, mine has the 235/40/19s.

Ah yes, forgot about the bigger brakes.

I remember i was digging around a while ago on different tyre sizes to get a 17 which would be the right diameter with something like a 205.

Are you sure the boot well is different on the 4wd?

I have gone for a full size spare as faffing about with a space saver was not something I wanted to do, this includes trying to find somewhere that can provide a tyre repair or a full size replacement when travelling

I would suggest you drop off a wheel and then try it for size in the wheel well, see how it fits and then decide.  They are fairly heavy so stay put once in the well. I have the variable boot floor and the carpet underneath is now slightly high but not a problem as the boards still lay flat once on the upper position. Also I have put bits and pieces around the wheel such as; safety triangle, luminous over trousers, blankets and gloves etc so that all space is taken up.

See:

To challenge any thought about not getting a spare wheel.

Hmm, I can get a full size alloy with a tyre for £275 which, I would consider if I had the variable boot floor, but having it raised permanentl. Without it, I imagine the floor would be uneven then, not sure I want to live with that, but it's something I'm going to think about further before I commit any of my hard earned.

I have an L&K hatch which came with a foam insert and the spray can, compressor and so on. I took the whole thing out and replaced it with an 18-inch Pegasus alloy wearing a Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4 winter tyre, along with a Skoda jack in the boot-side compartment. I figured that a winter tyre would be a better all-year spare than a summer one. It was all very expensive indeed, but if I ever need it I will be very glad not to be stranded in what would almost certainly be the middle of nowhere!

It is a tight fit in the wheel well, and I had to remove the plastic trim strip from the rear end of the boot, snip away enough to let the tyre fit and then screw it back in - when you look at it, it's obvious where I mean. The wheel/tyre sits a bit proud of the boot floor but some old towels around it make up the difference so that the boot carpet sits near enough flat. Given that, in the event of a puncture where you have a space-saver spare, the full-sized damaged one has to go in the boot,  it's odd that Skoda didn't make the well deep enough   - just another example of "simply clever", I suppose.

Just a reminder, of course - don't use a directional tyre if you're going to do this.

To those who bought a spare wheel - what did you do with the giant styrofoam insert that was there to begin with?

Seems a shame to bin it, but I have no idea who would need one? Either they already have one with their car, or a spare wheel! I saw an ebay listing £50 for it!!
