B-Xenon Main Beam Question

Featured Replies

I'm just getting accustomed to my 2019 Superb II SE L Executive Estate, having come from an 2016 Octavia SE L.

The Superb has Bi-Xenon headlights and "Adaptive Front Light System". It may also have "Light Assist" but I can't be sure as the manual seems a bit confused over that !

My question is this - on the Octavia, if I had the light switch at "Auto" and I switched on the main beam a little white  "A" icon would light up in white in the Maxi DOT display  (as well as the blue main beam icon) and the main beam would automatically dip for approaching cars.

Does the Bi-Xenon Superb have similar system ? If I have the light switch at "Auto" and switch on the main beam, only the blue "main beam" indicator lights up in the display and I have to dip the headlights manually. I have nothing against manually dipping the lights, I'm just curious as to whether or not there is a feature that is switched off somehow.

Does anyone know how this should work ?

You have to tap the indicator stalk away from you. The "A" icon will then show up and away ya go.

It’s worth noting that not all cars come with this option, some can be coded with VCDS to make it work though.
You do however need the larger A5 camera fitted.:

I think that one of the ways you can tell is if the eyelashes are lit.

IIRC it was a £100 option on my L&K but I will bow to @Gizmo's greater knowledge on this.

Yes SLA was just £100 on the L&K, but something like £950 on lower trim levels.

However if you specced TSR (£85) then you got the A5 camera needed.

Sorry, I understand that bit - that's what I meant by I "switch on the main beam".  I tap the indicator stalk away from myself. The main beam comes on - as does the blue icon in the display - but there is no "A" icon to show anything else. And I don't know if there should be or not.

Ok - I have seen this mentioned a lot in other posts.

Excuse my ignorance, but can someone explain exactly what these "eyelashes" are and why there seems to be so much confusion/discussion over them ?

A gentle push will illuminate the 'A' (if you have the SLA option) and a more prolonged push will just put the main beam on.

The eyelashes are the lights within the headlight that radiate from the rear for want of a better description.

As Gizmo says, High Beam Assist was not always standard. Mine (MY17 L&K) didn't have it, but it did have the A5 camera so I installed HBA using OBDeleven.

Smart Light Assist is different. It masks cars in front/coming toward you while keeping the high beam everywhere else. The "eyelashes" are the plastic ridges inside the headlights. If your car has SLA they will light up when the lights are on, otherwise they won't. In truth it is very difficult (for me at least) to tell the difference between a car that has SLA and one that doesn't just by looking at the headlights. Mine does not have SLA and it is a massive retrofit (there is a thread on here about someone who did it). It involved new lights, wiring and coding. Not for the faint hearted!

Does that mean HBA & SLA can both show the 'A'?

I only have HBA and I get the 'A'.

Ok, that's something I can try at least - gentle push vs prolonged push - to see if that solves the problem.

And that might also explain why my daughter could never get the auto-dip function to work in the old Octavia - she was doing a harder push of the stalk.

Thanks.

At the risk of complicating things further, that isn't how mine works. To use HBA on mine I have to leave the light stalk pushed forward into the high beam position. That is when the 'A' appears. If I leave it in the "neutral"/dipped position or pull it toward me to flash someone the 'A' disappears and high beam will not come on automatically until I return the stalk to the high beam position.

Ah the joy of technology.

I will experiment with the main beam stalk to see what it does in the various positions.

Thanks

FYI mine feels just like a traditional light stalk. Forward is high beam, centred is dipped, with a pull toward you to "flash" someone. For HBA to work, I have to leave it in the forward position all the time, which is a bit counter-intuitive.

Yes, if HBA is enabled it will show the A.

SLA, if fitted, will show it too.

This is wat SLA eyelashes look like.....

Afaik should be an entry on the Infotainment vehicle settings menu, also accessible via the cluster maxidot to enable/disable.

Good point. I do remember having to tick the box to enable it on the infotainment once I had done the HBA coding. I can't remember whether it appears in the assist systems menu in the maxi-dot though.

When enabled HBA won't show up anything different in the infotainment, but u'll notice the A symbol in the dash.

The Assist menu in the infotainment will show a tick box for "dynamic light assist" regardless.

I hd a 2015 Octavia which did have HBA

I now have a 2017 Superb with Xenons which does not.

If u have the A5 camera that @Gizmo mentioned a few posts up, u can enable HBA.

My MY17 didn't come with HBA enabled.  Using VCDS, I enabled it.

So I don't have the A5 camera (see photos)  which is fair enough.

Does that mean I don't have any "Light Assist" features or just a more basic one ?

AFAIK the A5 camera is needed with the expensive fancy SLA (Selective Light Assist) option.....which comes with the A5 camera! Not to be confused with AFS which is what my 2018 SEL has as standard. My SEL doesn't have HBA, it was an extra cost option. I wouldn't want it anyway, I also think the rain sensor is a waste of money. Wipers and lights are better under manual control IMO.

HBA just requires a camera of any type. Check your infotainment/maxidot menus for the HBA option, if it's greyed out it's not available without extra coding.

Both HBA and SLA use the same A5 camera - there is no "higher" version required for SLA headlights.

Based on the pics, @BOD20 does not have the required camera for HBA.

As I've already mentioned before - there is no indication on the infotainment system that HBA is enabled or not.

The only indication is the A symbol on dashboard.
