Skoda rapid 1.2 tsi traction control and EPC light

Featured Replies

Morning everyone,

2 weeks ago while travelling home from Leeds the traction control light and the EPC light both lit up on my Skoda rapid the car started to slow and went into limp mode. After ringing a friend he said to pull over and turn the car off then back on after 30 seconds. It seemed to be successful as both lights went off  and the car was perfectly fine till this morning. As I was taking my partner to work the EPC light came on again but no traction control light , car still seems to be driving fine but I can rule out a long journey being the cause this time as it’s a 5 minute drive. Any advice or solutions would be appreciated thanks.

My advice would be get a qualified professional with all the gear and more than an idea to check out things.

It might be a lose connection, a corroded one or it could be anything.

You do not say the cars age, the cars mileage, and what servicing it might have had, and have the brake pads been replaced or even checked recently.

I had exactly the same happen on my Toledo. It possibly went another 2 weeks before it occurred again. I did exactly as you did, pulled over and turned off then restarted, all good again.

Wind on to the second time it happened and I followed the same procedure, all good again. The next day I went out in the car and it happened on around 3 occasions in around 4 miles, not good. I've got a code reader and it threw up a code TPS faulty (throttle position sensor) but why I said does the EPC and the traction control lights show?

Took it to my local garage and he cleared the codes, told me to take a test drive, it happened again within a mile. Went back, he had already checked the TPS, all good. He had a hunch that the battery could be down on power, he said VAG group cars throw up all sorts of weird codes, he has experience of these.

He tested the battery and found it low on power, I queried this and he said we'll fit a new battery before we start ripping parts off that probably won't cure the problem but cost you loads of unnecessary spent money.

Glad to say it cured the problem, two years on all still good. What I do now is I keep the battery maintained, especially in winter as I don't use the car daily. I think it's that kind of use that's most likely started to kill the battery. It's the high powered one for the stop start and they ain't cheap.

So to just to say the simplest thing you can do is get your battery checked out, mine started giving up after just under 5 years.

I work next door to a garage and the mechanic said he will plug in his computer and see what codes pop up so hopefully that’s gives me a result if not I’ll be sure to get him to check my battery to thanks for the help 👍

Yes my man down at the local garage hooked his diagnostic gizmo up to it and found the same code as I did with my cheapo reader.

From what he told me he's seen enough VAG cars throwing up these types of codes and dash light warnings. Sometimes it's a little baffling to him so he goes through the basics first to elimate stuff. Glad to say he cracked it more or less first time by fitting the new battery.

Did you resolve this problem?

Still not resolved busy waiting for a VAGCOM to get specific codes current codes are linked with the acceleration pedal and ECU so not looking good

If a new battery doesn't fix it, then it could be expensive. Both my 1.2 and 1.0 TSI have had similar symptoms leading to new turbos ( via new boost actuators on both too ).

My car started throwing EPC light on after the car sat for two weeks. No more EPC light after driving it for a while but every now and then it acts up and gives random codes, locks the doors only seconds after unlocking them, lock me inside the car, has problems starting etc. Most likely a bad battery.
